Usually I play a half-elven mage, but this time I may roll an elf mage just so I can fry some racist human butt with lightning. :p

The major issue with no.1 is, of course, that it works great for TC mods, but expansion mods like mine have no such luxury. I could replace the three vanilla races with three of my own, which would add about another year to finish the development of a release-ready version, since I obviously couldn't do it with episodic content as I plan. But even then I would just add three brand new IP races to replace the old ones... yay. I don't have the luxury of an established IP to draw upon - expandin

Actually my mod is not so lucky - the main goal of the project always was to expand the Sins universe from the three races to a total of six, something which now looks impossible to do. The thing I'm worried most about is the mesh limit... I don't know what can be done with the textures taking up so much memory, but that at least can be dealt with by limiting their size and going creative with the UV mapping... provided of course they up the limit. This really sucks. We've spent more

Hmm... the mesh limit will be a major problem for me if its not upped to allow for at least a hundred or two hundred more meshes. Same with textures, although I have already exceeded the 1000 limit and haven't had major issues yet. I can't really remove native elements (a.k.a do the total conversion) because The Last Stand was envisioned as an "expansion mod" from the beginning. So in order to do this properly I really need more than just a dozen free mesh slots... a single race takes

Holy shit... 400 meshes only!? What the... the vanilla+entrenchment meshes ammount to 378! That leaves only 22 meshes, that's not even enough for a single new race! How are mods like 7DS which add some 11 new races doing it, unless its all just reskins which I don't think so. How come they're not getting minidumps all over the place? *edit* I just checked, Entrenchment and Vanilla texture folders have 990 texture files, which means all my mods should minidump since I definitel

There is no conversion list as far as I know. I just select them and click "Convert". Try disabling the preview function and make sure your output folder is set (you can autoset it in the options).

I recommend using DDS Converter 2 , a free and easy to use tool which can convert most commonly used image formats to .dds, using either the S3 or nVidia algorithms. Besides, its a lot faster than the nVidia plugin for Photoshop, especially if you work with textures bigger than 1024x1024. And yeah, it can work in batches. When converting, simply select the nVidia algorithm and DXT5 for all your textures, including

Heads up, seems I've forgot to include some modded files in the vanilla version archive, so you can't see all the new explosions for the Advent and Vasari. If you are using the vanilla Sins, re-download the mod from the link available at the top, I've tested it and it works fine. Here's some shots so you can see for yourself: <img src="http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/7228/volumetric122.th

Ok, the new version is baked and ready to be served! Volumetric Explosions and Damage Effects v1.2 Download link The big changes in this version include explosion optimization, new explosions for all three factions - now Vasari, Advent and TEC ships have different explosion effect attached to them so you can always tell who just blew up - and new sound effects for all main ship explosions

Actually, the game is more deliberate and slow paced than the usual FPS. Most of the time you want to set up in a nice defensible position, scope up and simply scan the area for targets, then pick them off with single shots. Doing it the other way around, as in running like mad and shooting on full auto will only result in you hitting the ground, if you're lucky. I had to fire only twice from my hip where quick reactions saved my butt, but it was also luck and the fact that the offend

Well, recently I stumbled across a really nice piece of modding work which gives us fans of realistic tactical shooters a very nice option (and we all know how few of those options we've got to start with). It's a mod for Battlefield 2, and it transforms what is a pretty arcade-ish online shooter into the most teamplay-oriented tactical shooter I've ever played (and I pretty much played them all). The gameplay reminds me heavily of Red Orchestra, in terms of seeing people take cover w

Here's another option for tactical realism shooter fans - Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2. In my opinion, after only a few (but long) battles, its the no.1 choice for the tactical shooter connosieur out there. If you haven't, try it, it blows things like ARMA II out of the water.

You can use the spawn ship ability and simply have it spawn a capital ship. You need to add a delay though, or the ship is going to be spawned instantly, instead of taking time to be built. You also can't have the ability build any capital ship, you have to specify exactly which one, so its a bit of a compromise.

Ok, thanks for the info. I am working on the new effects for each faction right now, I got the Vasari more or less done and I need to do the Advent, then I'll release the new version - in the meantime use Harpo's mod updater to fix the minidump. Oh, and also the new version will be again optimized to run much better in big battle scenarios.

When I have a definitive ETA it'll be displayed in bold red letters in the opening post. Currently I am rigging ship models for gameplay, which includes adding particle effects, tweaking stats and testing them in actual gameplay (hence the combat trials). I am also working on models for structures, that part is going relatively quickly. And of course, I am also working on UI elements, such as icons and coding research trees and abilities. Add to that about three other projects, one of

Yeah, I thought as much as soon as I saw the guy get shot in the trailer movie and not die. I tried Battleground Europe, but it took too long to get some action for me. I stick with Red Orchestra, action is good, teamplay is good by necessity (since all the Rambos get weened out real quick), I just wish there were more games like that out there. In my opinion games which cater to the realism crowd are much more fun in multiplayer because they force the players to work together. You ca

Ok, recently I started to get this very annoying problem when loading up the mod I'm working on. I know its mod related because if I disable it, the problem dissapears. The planets are see-through. Transparent. Furthermore, all bump-mapping ceases to function and the models look flat (otherwise the texturing is as normal). If I disable the mod and then enable it, usually the problem goes away for that session, though if I turn off the game and back on, it comes back as well. T

I'll throw in Hearts of Iron II and III (haven't played the original so can't tell) AI to the pile of good opponents. The third installment is especially engrossing because it has such a complex model of the command structure and warfare in general and plenty room to maneuver with a globe split into some 15 000 provinces. Compared to the way AI works in this game, both with diplomacy and more importantly, warfare, Total War series look like arcade slash-and-smash games. I usually don'

Hijacked? Casual vs hardcore is the core of this discussion! In other words, games have gotten easier (less hardcore) because this type of entertainment has spread to the masses. Now game studios cater to the masses to maximize their profits, which results in games which are geared towards being accessible to the casual gamer, since most gamers are casual. Hardcore games, like Red Orchestra, have moved to occupy a niche of their own. Unfortunately because of that few developers actual
