LOSE ship design? egads. That's one of the favorite parts of the game for the player base as is. That's close to making a fantasy game with no magic. :S Sorry, bad idea. If I have to trade ship design to get a coop MP mode, heck no. Not even a fair trade.

5/6s of the population of a NATION--on a SHIP! Yes, that's a lot. Put that in perspective, Babylon 5 always was imagined as having "a half-million humans and aliens" living on the station. A space station will be *much* bigger than a single colony ship. But it has 1/5th the population. I presume they're in sleeper-stasis, as that's the only way that is viable. 250 billion? Not even plausible. Not on a ship. Not in a world.
Fistleaf, No, but the AI does do at least a decent job of recognizing what techs it values and making you pay dearly for them. If you turn off the "tech brokering" option (which I do), then you limit that aspect even more.
I set rally points to 3-4 "staging areas" for a campaign and then send ships to the nearest one. Works well when you're in a multiple front war on immense maps. They'll auto-combine into fleets at the rally point until they hit your logistics cap. Then you send them off to cause mayhem.
The best way to learn (and play) the game is to just play it sandbox. The campaigns are useful to learn the story. But really, it's the sandbox is where the fun is. :)
Roxlimn, It's 250 MILLION, not billion. That's still a WHOLE lot for one ship.
Interesting that the Iconians are rated so low. I'd say that their colonization techs are very useful. Plus their alternate tech tree is fascinating. I also agree that the Altarian weapon penalty is not nearly as important as it appears at first. With their alternate techs and their luck bonuses, they can cause lots of pain. The Korx on the other hand, often get crushed between the low loyalty and the fact that often one of the first laws the UP passes is the trade route restriction o
[quote who="Rightwinger" reply="9" id="2086564"]The Klingons have the KDF..."Klingon Defense Force" fleet. The Klingons, for one race, are not too concerned with scientific knowledge beyond that which advances their empire and it capabilities. Similar are the Romulans, only more sneaky and devious. they're th eones, after all, who developed the Cloaking Device and the Bird-of-Prey concept ship, both likely obtained by the Klingons in the brief Romulan-Klingon alliance of 2268-70. lol. When I saw a quick reply I thought I had accidently done some "grave-digging." But 10 days isn't "too" long on most forums. hehe So I may be a necromancer...but not a forum necro. [e digicons]O:)[/e]
I do think the Gal Civ story is influenced by B5. But then, I love B5 and even occasionally played in MOO2 as "John Sheridan." (Actually did that in Alpha Centauri too, w/ "Rangers" as a custom faction [e digicons];P[/e] ). Though to be fair, in B5 it was not nearly as simple as "humans" leading the coalition against the First Ones. Though B5 was a human station and the Rangers were Minbari and humans working together.
I don't think there should be any kind of MP "balancing" done. I think the arguments against more time than is necessary to simply set up a MP provision are spot on. This isn't a real time shooter, and I don't want it treated like one. MP, if desired and included, should be hotseat/LAN/Direct Connect ONLY. And I'd never buy a turn-based game that tried to cater to multi-player...or any strategy game that tried to do so in any way. I've never played Civ MP. And I've never wanted to. I never wa
