I've noticed that some of the anomaly upgrades don't appear to have an effect on the cargo hulls, but I've yet to decide whether it's better to make a genuinely fast cargo ship surveyor, or to pump out tiny survey vessels. With my current games using the +2 speed bonus I lean towards the latter, but you can make an argument either way. Jonnan

Somewhere I picked up the impression that the range was scaled to the map-size, but I've never heard what the 'default' scale 1 unit=1 unit map was. I tend to agree it has always felt odd to me that range is as high as it is. Although I never felt like you could just reach 'across the galaxy' all that fast, I've never noticed the range techs were grabbing me as something I absolutely needed to grab all that fast either - get a few colonies out and you were fine, Jonnan

I concede my experience is the polar opposite of Cobra's - Linux is my day to day OS, Windows is used to play games, and that's about it. My experience is that, for gaming purposes, Wine is really iffy - easier to dual boot or (If your processor will support it) run a virtual machine. Others however have had better luck than myself. Jonnan

I would recommend (if you can find them) E.E. Doc Smiths "Lensman" - it's very much space opera, but it is the first good space opera, and all other good space opera goes back to it in some way - {G}. I will second Lois Bujold's Barrayar series - but be warned, they're addictive, but fun. If you are a Star Trek fan, I would highly recommend anything by Diane Duane or John Ford - two authors that were good writers before Star Trek and managed to translate that skill in
I think that's actually based on the, ah, history of the relations. I think you can set it at the start of the game in the ai settings, but in game in seems to build up over time. Jonnan
As a quick addendum to influence (and other) mines - Assign Rally points to strategic objectives (Mines and special projects owned by the other side - if he has the Restaurant of Eternity, you might as well flip that planet first - {G}) and some tactically positioned constructor fleets. I rarely pick fights with Minor Races, but when they fall it often opens up anywhere from two to five mines to be grabbed, and it's first come first served. Wine can be really useful for getting various Windows utilitities to run under Linux, but for games I definitely recommend just setting up a dual boot system. There are more good games native to Linux than existed even a year ago, but I have *not* had good luck running anything that uses 3-D Graphics with Windows under Wine, even with porting in XP DLL for Wine to use directly. Maybe someday, maybe even someday soon, but for the moment, it's not like dual booting is all that difficult
That doesn't sound *quite* like the economy bug I got, but it sounds like it might be a relative - {G}. It seems vaguely plausible the 'illegit' disk you bought was buggy in the first place, maybe a leaked beta or something similar - I would uninstall the whole thing an reinstall from impulse. I would counter that the'general standard' used by Windows actually doesn't consistently work, and happens to be hidden more deeply. So, yeah, Ubuntu has hundred of libraries and thousand of smaller programs that are individually accessible *if* joe user goes to synaptic, aptitude, or apt-get rather than using the add-remove programs screen, but the fact that Ubuntu has gnome separated from nautilus rather than having everyting compiled into one big lumpy morass is only a weakness inasmuch as
