I don't want to encourage a monopoly, spend 2 seconds to close out of Steam every time I close Portal, have Steam take up 6-20 mb of my oh so precious ram, and if I don't have the choice to get Portal for free through another client I don't want it! Oh sorry that thread is the Civ 5 thread. >.> 1. You're a moron.
<p

EA is just shooting itself in the foot. It boggles my mind that people buy games and exchange them and then other people come up behind them to save 10 bucks and buys them used. However, these people that are buying games and then exchanging them tend to buy a lot of games. They buy a heck of a lot more games than I ever have in a year. They buy it for 60, turn it in for what 20-40 depending on the title and run out and buy another new game. If EA destroys that used market, they're not just d
Actually, DRM is about control of copyright and intellectual property. So both piracy of software AND reselling games fit into the sphere of DRM. In that respect DRM is a good method to protect a company's copyrights and intellectual property. However, the types of DRM implemented have little to desire in most cases. It's unfortunate that most companies take the "restrict" approach rather than the "value-add"
I guess the relevant point here is that this was likely not a DRM decision. Civ 4 uses Gamespy's multiplay functionality, and to be charitable I'm not much of a fan of that. (my account name is now Tridus-tk-tk2, WTF is that?) They're replacing the Gamespy stuff with Steamworks. You don't need Steamworks to provide DRM, you use it to provide matchmaking, achievements, and that sort of thing.
Isn't it ironic that the "fair and open market" you talk of led to a situation where Valve's superior product and catalog (in the eyes of consumers) have market dominance. That's just business, and how markets operate. If consumers belief a product is superior, they will use it. Seems that's what's happened with Steam. Does that mean you don't use Windows because of it's complete market dominance? <

the_Monk. I am going to let you in on a little secret. Pirates don't care about DRM. They don't care, because they bypass it. They don't have to worry about it. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the people making the cracks dont' even care about the game. They probably just get a thrill out of breaking the "unbreakable".
