http://www.forbes.com/opinions/2008/11/19/gm-economy-autos-oped-cx_bm_1119mcgarvie.html Are the automakers, not to mention the governor of Michigan, trying to scare the public much like Wall Street did into giving handouts?

I never understood why it was Hilary and not Rice that managed to hold the banner of the female to be President. Hilary's major reason for national prominence was being married to Bill. Rice overcame an incredible amount of prejudice to attain her victories with no coat-tails to ride.
I agree that there is a certain sense of shame applied to professions that don't require a college degree - suprisingly tech support can be one of those. My only concern would be someone going down a certain track then deciding to change to another track - like someone considering autorepair takes an EMT class and wants to a be nurse or doctor. There has to be some mobility in the system. I think the challenge inherent to the pre-college education system is preparing people for that m
Leauki, thanks for the counter.
i'm more concerned about getting a group of economists to explain the financial crisis to the American people. i just hope he isn't getting spiritual advice on the taxpayer's dime because that is a private matter.
Interesting. Guessing there's a counter argument to be made though...
A good follow up: Obama and Our Schools.
Looks good. This is one of those games that I'll be waiting impatiently for....
Looks like Paulson is seeing the light on this: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122650321703420903.html
I actually understand bailing out the autocompanies at this point - even some conservative economists are worried that letting these companies fail will make this recession into a depression. How many American jobs are tied to the big 3? The govenor of Michigan I believe said 1 in 10...that's a lot of purchasing power down the drain when retailers are seeing really bad numbers. I just hope that some measures are put in place to keep us from heading down this road again though I suspect
Something I've been thinking about while looking at the ongoing debates on this site is what it means to be poor and how do we address the growing divide of rich and poor in America. I don't agree that people really choose to be poor, but I think there is a culture of poverty that many people end up caught in and conditioned into. There seem to immigrants who come here with little to nothing but manage to achieve a lot - but perhaps they had money/schooling in their home country that
Bad Moon Rising: What if a low altitude moon appears in the sky and colors the night and day sky? Would it affect menstrual cycles and thus births? Would it cause people to go mad and increase violent crimes and rebellions? Would lycanthropes and possibly undead be empowered to walk in the day time? Mana Famine: An entire area goes into "mana debt" - any spell cast in this area can help lower the deficit of mana, or a channeler can spend an inordinate amount of mana to get the area ou
Wormwood (the star that falls in Revelations and turns the waters "bitter"): A meteor falls, creating a massive creator and disturbed monsters come out from the underground. The meteor itself might have a Cloverfield type titan, or maybe just little green psions. ;-) Pale Horse, Pale Rider: The reaper rides out, spreading a disease in which corpses have a % chance to rise as undead. The disease might act slow enough as to force players to decide to continue trade with an infected a
This looks awesome. Thank you Stardock for resurrecting MOM. [e digicons][/e]
thanks for being classy about the whole thing. i suspect it won't be as bad as you think - i think the bailout is what disillusioned people since they felt it was socialism helping out Wall Street. Not that there weren't careless people buying homes they couldn't afford, but Wall Street I think is what really ended up trying a bad housing market to the rest of the economy. my friend works in risk management at a bank and he says their department was basically told to go fuck thems
as someone who is firmly against affirmative action, i can say that this had nothing to do with such a policy. he won, plain and simple. if you really believe the economy is headed for disaster then do your patriotic duty and make yourself heard - you guys seem incredible talented and capable of getting your message across. look, four years ago i took the kids i worked with in inner city DC to a fancy restaurant and they thought they weren't allowed in because they were black
4:00pm. No Lines. Back to the library to study after that...
"With his ideas about spreading the wealth, entrepreneurial selfishness, the ongoing "original sin" in our Constitution, the inherent evil of corporations, nationalized health care, and the civil rights movement not doing enough to bring about "economic justice" -- a euphemism for "Marxism" used by radicals, such as Bill Ayers, who still hate America -- are you not concerned at just how far Obama might go if he's got a nearly veto-proof Democratic majority at his back?" This just seems
I've never met a single Obama supported who thinks he is Jesus. The only time I ever saw someone worshipping a candidate was in Jesus Camp with the Bush cutout.
Honestly, I'm curious to as a social liberal to see what happens - you might be right but maybe things will get better. I've been out of economics classes too long to remember how this stuff works out but you've motivated me to reread a lot so thanks Brad.
This is of the best articles on gaming and piracy ever written by the way.
