How about the option of having heroes join a squad to get them more survivability mid-late game just like you do in Dawn of War? Squad gets bonuses from the leader, leader gets strength of the numbers thru his squad... :)

RE: DEAD SOVEREIGN SUCCESSION Have some kind of reversed Golden Age, the whole kingdom mourning for their lost (Beloved?) Soveriegn and some anarchy (No production, loss of buildings / troops) within the lands for a few turns.... And Definitely hand over the reigns to the next in line (Taking into account all diplomatic possibilities! Family feud & and a kingdom split in half? ! :))
What about Squads being cut down to 1 unit from a reload when said squad were recovering HP at the time the savegame was created?! That one is downright game breaking but I don't believe I've seen anything about it in the list!? I'm actually not playing the game until this one is fixed... Given the amount of times the games will crash in a play session, not saving when units are hurt is not an option...

Mountains are too high for nothing in 2d view that's for sure! They annoy me... A nice texture of mountains with a certain elevation would be much clearer as to "This is a mountain" and "You can't walk here" Same with mountain passes or forest limits; They all need different sets of textures for their floor to delimit them clearly.

Excellent post! Hopefully they're planning something like this for the coming patches! That's actually what I was expecting from Elemental from the start!
Turn off auto generate is definitely what's needed!
Whenever I start the game a second window pops up (I got dual screens) during the elemental splash screen and prevents the game from launching. The error message on that window is "Entry point not found" I hit enter for the half dozen times it pops and finally the game starts... Windows 7 64 ATI 4850
I save and quit, and reload the game to fix that... Only problem, all the stacks you had recovering will be cut to 1 guy ;)
That's a bug from having recovering squads on a save/load game. Only work around: Never quit a game when your troops are not top health :s
1.06 or not, the game is broken beyond playing ATM, it crashes every hour or whatever and when you reload your game all your squads get cut to 1 unit (From the 4-8-12 the were trained as)... Its a VERY lame launch for sure but Elemental is an excellent game and will entertain you for years to come, I'm just not playing it anymore until some real patching happens :/
During the campaign you need 25 crystals for the capitar kingdom...
