Well, to date, I've always chosen Federalists as my political party, because I want to generate as much money as possible (money makes the galaxy go 'round). From a setup standpoint, I would try to get a starting sector which has a class 19 (or better) Earth, with at least two other yellow-star systems in the same sector (I personally like it when one of those systems is close enough that I can move the starting colony ship there in the first turn so that I can set up a colony at once and have

I saw it too - just went into the wonders.imp file with Notepad to reset the ID to the correct value.
I make use of ctrl-N very frequently because I'm one of these people who are never quite satisfied with my starting position. For instance, I _don't_ like to have to try to deal with one of the Big Five or a minor race right away, so if I get a starting layout that has me in the same sector as a minor race, or I encounter one of the major empires too close by my starting point (say, three or four sectors away), ctrl-N goes into action. Basically, my ideal starting layout involves a sector with
I handled the "prison break" event quite easily. At the time it happened, I'd developed dreadnought technology, and had already built some dreadnoughts - indeed, one of the ships was in orbit right above the prison planet! So it was child'd play to take that ship out of orbit and blast the three rogue "prison cruisers" to smithereens.
I almost forgot to mention that I did have another random event happen that might have turned out badly except for a piece of luck. The UP issue setting up a galactic prison planet had been voted on, and I'd gotten the nod; some turns later came the news of a major breakout, and when I went to the system in question I found three powerful "prison cruisers" surrounding the star. The good news, though, was that by that time, I'd researched dreadnoughts and just so happened to have one of them si
I haven't had any really bad things happen to me via random events yet in my first play with version 1.01. The Yor found some kind of doohickey that's supposed to give them an overwhelming tech advantage, but it's not helping them that much because my tech is keeping pace with or slightly ahead of theirs, and my influence, population, and military are WAY ahead of theirs. As a matter of fact, I came into a major piece of luck a couple of game-years back when the "galactic economic boom" random
Running my first game with version 1.01 now. I think I've put in about 8 to 9 hours' worth of gameplay so far, my current save is in 2205 and I'm over halfway to a cultural victory (though I'm building two Terror Stars just in case some people are not completely convinced of the overwhelming yumminess of Earthlings' arts and crafts). My system is based on an Athlon 1.4Ghz with 512 MB RAM and a Radeon 9000 with 128 MB; gameplay is overall quite smooth although the pause between turns is beginni
Let's clarify: are we talking about renaming star systems, or renaming individual planets within the star systems? My own practice has always been to rename each star system according to various schemes (I have several, depending on what I feel like using at the time, and which I may discuss in another thread); I think that you can only rename a star at the time you colonize it when the popup appears saying you've discovered a new solar system. As to individual planets, I remember that
Just in case you didn't see my post on the front page in reply to Brad's announcement; if you go to the GameSpot main page and find the MOO3 review, you'll see that GalCiv significantly outscores MOO3, 8.4 to 6.7. :)
Brad mentioned yesterday that he expected to send out emails the same day (Monday) to all beta program members and Drengin.net members about the procedure for getting the CD-ROM. I don't seem to have gotten anything in my own email yet, though of course I might have deleted it by accident if I did get it; I get a lot of spam and it's easy to throw out a message you didn't mean to while rooting through the trash. So, what's the info? -Joe-
I personally think that the galactic political environment presented to us by Brad & co. here is plenty for political junkies; after all, when you consider it, our politics here on Earth is only 1 planet out of however many 15+ - class worlds there are on a gigantic map. I daresay that the coding required to replicate the back-and-forth between tens of thousands of nations on that scale would bring down even one of the Crays of legend.
Player of GalCiv since I got the original OS/2 version (on floppy disks, yet!) in 1995; originally saw it in an Egghead store (anyone remember Egghead?)
The post quoted at the top of this thread isn't the whole story, by a long shot. I read that thread, then went and explored a few more recent threads (including the one posted by Apoc - look for that one and read it over), and what I came away with was this impression: MOO3 needs _time_ to be grokked. You can't just go into it expecting it to be a continuation, or a clone, of MOO1 or MOO2. In many ways, it's _sui generis_, and needs to be approached in that way. It seems to me as if what pe
I've been seeing something similar pop up in the games I've been running this weekend under 4Z. Large sections of the map that were previously under a particular color will go blank (back to black), and then on the next turn, return to the usual color. I didn't look closely enough to see whether the influence area was reduced to sectors with planets/starbases, but I think you're right. Probably a glitch in the update routine for the map. -Joe-
I noticed the loss of cut scenes and also the choppy/slow opening animation with the door opening, but I had previously ascribed the missing videos to another message Brad put up earlier when 4Z came out that some video and audio had been removed to tweak them before the release. Can't comment on audio since I'm hearing-impaired, therefore I generally play with the sound turned off. I haven't had any problems with video/audio otherwise (I had a CTD just now, but that was associated with anothe
Playing on a gigantic galaxy size, all computer players set to "normal" IQ level. I had the message about how some merchants had spotted a dreadful space creature (with a properly horrid-looking graphic that looks like a spacegoing fire ant) pop up, and then on the very next turn, when I went to check my domestic stats, the game had a CTD - screen went black as if the monitor was turning off, and then the desktop came back up. No error message. I wasn't playing from the Drengin Network contro
I have an Athlon 1.4 Ghz with 512 MB RAM and a new Radeon 9000 (128 MB) AGP card and DirectX 8.1. It's just as well that my system exceeds the recommended specs, because I wouldn't think of playing at any size below huge. To my way of thinking, it's not a galaxy unless it's spread out across thousands of light years with hundreds of stars. :d
Brad says elsewhere in the forum that you can cut down on the hardware requirements a lot if you don't play the videos. I believe he says you have to delete the *.bik files or move them to a different directory.
In the current beta, which I've been putting through its paces today, the computer-player races get too hostile too fast and go to war with me for no apparent reason. For instance, I make contact with the Altarian Republic, I have very little contact with them other than a technology swap, and then, out of the blue, as far as I can determine, they declare war on me. This doesn't make much sense to me even if one assumes that all the other spacefaring powers are alarmed by the emergence of the
I agree. I really would prefer that scientific anomalies be reset so that projects can be completed immediately, or at least completed immediately a portion of the time. In fact, I think the "easier" levels of the game overall ought to be just that - easy, with as many advantages as possible for the brand-new player (but that particular discussion has been done before in a couple of other threads).
Had to download DGM 0.66.086, but I finally got it last evening.
I've just run into the same problem CyberMage reported. I started DGM, and the file drengin.ex_ was updated; then when DGM connected to the server and opened, GalCiv was missing from the menu. I suspect that whatever update you did somehow knocked GalCiv off the menu, so it's simply not possible to download Beta 1Z or play the game except by starting the executable directly. :(
