If a player has a high research output, s/he can gain in one turn multiple techs in the same line. For example, suppose one has been playing for a while in a game and suddenly decides to research (say) beams. You select "beam theory" (you already have done, say, guns). The next turn you may get the message that you have gained beam theory, laser 1, laser 2, and laser 3 - four tech levels. Early in a game, even if you have huge research, you can

1) I do not have ToA (I play DA), but others who have posted here have reported that ToA nerfed focus, presumably to make it less attractive. That is, the amoount gained was reduced and/or the amounts in the other areas was reduced. 2) Yes. However, one variation of all factories, especially when the homeworld comes with a juicy (3x or particularly 7x) tile, has you start with rush buying one research building for that bonus tile. Then, you throw resourses into resea
I wonder if it would be more of an advantage if one played as the Arceans (sp?) -- assuming the mega-ability of first shot still works after the patches.
YAQW = You Are Quite Welcome ;-)
Since SEIV and even ol' MOO2 have multiplayer capability, it would seem that DA could be made to have it, as well. Playing with/against humans would just provide another option. If I have read the post right on those other boards, many of the MP games are LAN with only humans. In fact, one could make the MP option preclude AIs, if one wanted. In any case, in an all-human game, the playing field is leveled. Sure, the diplomacy stuff would be ignored, but it
Belanos - You said DA was "near flawless" but the same thing happens in DA. That is, I may not have met ANY AIs yet, and I will still get reports like "The Krynn have built a manufacturing capital". Those races will not show in the UP or any other screens. I have treated them like third hand news, when face-to-mandible contact is needed for communication. I do not have TA and DA is what i play. I never chose the option to specify the other AIs, so tho
YAQW! ;-) By the way -- and I mention this only because you said you've ben away from the game -- you need to koin Impulse to get the last patch (to 2.01 for DA, I believe). Othrewise, the last patch is 1.80 or something like that.
I have to remember after every invasion to click on this, too. Late in the game, the AI has already converted to Industrial Sectors and the mega-farms. However, when I replace the superfluous research buildings with Manufacturing Centers, the Governor thing will redo them into those damnable Industrial Sectors unless I do that switch thingy. Also, if I take over a cap 6 planet and want it to be a 9 or 12, unless I toggle that thing the Governor will upgrade the farm or wha
padcrusher - Later in the game, when I am readying for war, I generally do things to raise population growth and siphon off population as the caps are reached by "enlisting" them onto invasion transports. The typical capacity I use for those vessels is 2500 or 3000 legions. As each transport fills, I send it to some rally point, starbase, or convenient nexus within my borders. (I generally have a warship or escort fleet waiting ther
Several times I have used the invasion fleet aggravation to get AIs to declare war. Just park a few loaded transports in their space not too far from their planets. You can tell if it is working by checking the Relationship bar in a couple turns.
There are lots of older threads that discuss the relationship between population and happiness. A quick way to brush up on the situation is to look through the wiki. https://www.galciv.wikia.com/wiki/Population Basically, as population goes up, tax revenue goes up - assuming tax rate constant. Also, as population goes up, morale goes down. Also, as taxes go up, morale goes down. And, as mo
What are the positions for your sliders that allocate the spending of resources? On the same screen where you determine tax and spending rates, there should be three sliders whose values add to 100%. By moving them, you allocate percentages of income to military (ship building) social (buildings) and research. Have you tried moving those sliders to various values and checking the research generated per colony and the time to completion?
Belanos - #8 On your mysterious races that do not show up in screens or in UP meetings, could they be minor races? Minor races are not in the UP. To access a minor race, one must toggle the "minor races" button on one screen (possible the "Relations" screen?), toggle one of their ships, or toggle on their planet. Especially early in the game, you might not yet have "seen" their planet and their ships may have met your only briefly. Note that you DO get an oppor
Just be aware that you need Impulse to patch GalCiv2 to the latest (last?) patch.
pizzapicante27 - PISS is the answer, so far. I had horrible problems on both my PCs trying to finish games (Immense, all abundant, etc.). I had tried the save and reload trick, and it generally gained me one turn each time, sometimes two, but sometimes none. I began to save before hitting the turn button each time. None of those let me play the game to the end, as even freshly reloaded games were often crashing. See my post #15 in this thread. I
Okay - in this example (for simplicity) I had postulated that all desired research had been completed. So, even if one had not started with all-factory, that would be the case now. So, it would be 50-50-0, or maybe 1-99-0. Still, this brings up another point. The initial colony structure produces research creds, IIRC. Otherwise, moving the slider over to increase research percentage would yield no research creds in the absence of resear
Are you saying that setting focus on social will make a planet with 10 research structures produce more social points despite the empire-wide slider set at zero research than an identical planet with no research structures with the slider set at at zero research?
Postulate the following: 1) You have just obtained a new planet with pre-existing improvements. Maybe it was in trade, maybe influence, maybe invasion, maybe surrender - - no matter. You didn't build what's there, but now you own it anyway. 2) Many of the improvements are ones you do not want. For example, perhaps you do not want any research buildings (the tree could be researched out for you). Perhaps there are four farms and you want only one.
I have not had any more OOM crashes after I dialed down just about everything I could, as I related in post #20 above. Of course, the game is not nearly as pretty as it was. I have quasi-lego ships orbiting featureless planets exchanging flickers and dots as they "fight", but the game has not been crashing. I think I would have won that earlier Suicidal game that crashed saving after a major race surrendered to me, only to surrender to everyone else but me i
I cannot speak for TA, but I have not seen this in DA. Have you ever selected a "core" design and then hit the upgrade button while in the "shipyard" screen? (The one where you design ships) If you do that, then toggle the display option which shows only functional pieces. Next, look at each of the revealed components and compare them to what you can put on a design-your-own ship. Are they the same? Are there any components there that you cannot selec
What I sometimes have to do is to zoom in and make sure the green circle is almost exactly centered in the desired square before clicking. Also, one side click works and the other does not, and I don't recall which one is correct. That is, try both, in case you are left clicking when you should be right clicking, or the reverse.
What version of DA are you playing? Per you previous post, you were playing 1.8. If you are still in the 1.x series, you will not have the passive spying option. You must download a patch via Impulse, to get to (IIRC) 2.01. If you do confirm that you are playing 2.01 and still cannot see how to place spies passively on a race, please post here again.
Oh, I've had every improvement type I want - most definitely including stock markets - for dozens of turns now, maybe close to 50 turns. In fact, due to invasions I may end up with multiple Temples in Multiple ethics branches. I wonder if it will get me tourism BCs in more than one?
I will look for it there! Even having to go through planet by planet will be okay, just as long as I have to do it only once and it does not screw me again and again.
I know that the default settings initiate auto-upgrades when new improvements are gained, either by research, trade, espionage, or conquest. I have no problems with that, and I can go undo them, generally, should I wish. However, periodically, the game just decides ro re-visit all my colonies and do auto-upgrades. This really POs me. I deliberately do not research Industrial Sectors or higher farms, but sometimes I end up with those techs anyway. So, when I g
