I recommend you browse the newegg site. I agree with a two core system, as quads seem not to be much help until high performance demands. There is some performance spread with price there, but any Wolfdale would be 2.5 GHrz or better. There is some performance gain with increases in speed, helped some by the fact that the internal cache size also increases at some speeds. On memory, I'd suggest matching the memory speed to the CPU FSB figure. So, maybe D

If one gives/trades Xeno Ethics to Minor races, do they choose an alignment? If one were playing in a galaxy with a lot of minor races (and maybe fewer major races), this could be a useful tactic. That is, if Minor races all go to some default alignment, then giving/trading them all Xeno Ethics and Trade might actually make building that alignment Temple worth the trouble!
I don't know about TA, but one gets access to the small boost of Harmony Crystals when choosing Ethics. Also, the sooner one gets to the level after that, the sooner one gets the empire-wide ship building bonues (ASC?) and the No Mercy Invasion facility, both of which are valuable in early wars.
I have found that playing with textures off has eliminated my "out of memory" errors. The planets, stars, ships, etc. do not look quite as pretty, but I'm now able to play with max size galaxy, etc. w/o frequent crashes.
I'm trying not to whine about it, but is there a math basis for your 1/3 number? I ask because that figure seems dramatically inconsistent with my own experience. It got so bad that in some games I build the MCC when I get money desperate, then give it to an enemy I'm at war with, then flip a bunch more planets, then take back the planet for money again. Actually, the presence of big bonuses on the Starship Bonus world may not be all that important if one has a huge economy. That is, folk have posted that the bonuses stay with the ship through upgrades. Sooooo, I think one can use that planet with the Starship Bonus to build nothing but large/huge hulled warships with one cheap gun and one piece of defense, then upgrade. The description in DA is that it provides the 100% econ gain and also FLIPS planets (and I guess fields) at first opportunity. In actual play, the MCC provides the advertised 100% econ gain, but it STOPS flipping. Oh, I've had one or two fields and maybe one planet flip anyway, but that's it. So, stats-wise, it's ~0%. I encountered a strange bug (?) last night playing DA. I inadvertently researched Ethics w/o 10,000 BCs (had 9,712) and, to my surprise, found that Evil was the 10,000 BC choice. The Evil choices made during the smallish Colony Rush I managed at Suicidal apparently were more than offset by all the treaties I had managed after running the diplo tree. To get out of the screen, I chose Neutral (the 0 BC choice), then quit, and re-loaded from a previous save just before.
WAH! I want the DA MCC bug fixed!
The few times I tried to buy/trade for an AI warship, they wanted far too much! But, I confess, I'm not sure I've tried that after running all the way down the diplo tree. Hmmmm.
By far, the best way to delay wars and also to take advantage of a superior diplomacy rating is to get the AIs all tied up in multiple wars amongst themselves. There are actually multiple reasons for this, and you probably want those wars to begin before the end of the colony rush (second phase). Mumblefratz - I have tried the Psionic Beam. The daggone thing is expensive to produce and srill requires considerable research down that tree. Last Suicidal game I had gotten three Psionic Beam cargo hulls with over 100 AF each into SCC orbit and the AIs still declared war on me before I could get more there. I will have to try other experiments. I have not, for example, gone on an early war offensive with small Psionic Beamers. That could be fun!

You must be talking about TA. I do not recall being able to control the number of non-standard planets in DA. There have been several threads lately by us relative newcomers on the difficulty of winning at Suicidal, though the "old hands" have their ways. Yes. For example, the Yor start with ion engines. Between them and the other race or races that can colonize non-standard worlds, they will colonize the map and grow large tax-paying populations, much-much-much larger than yours. Another possibility on my list to try is the slowest research rate with a very high research race starting from a 7x research planet. Just maybe one could get ahead of them that way, but they will still flood the map while you research.</p
