I would also recommend starting with APT1. It's pretty much what I did with my own personal fix mod; some of the others are quite different from the vanilla game and don't interest me that much. In my view you should at least play the game as it was meant to be played before deciding how you want to change it.

Your criticism is noted, but I'm honestly just writing this thing in chronological order, with a few alterations to keep strings of related events together. It's not a story-type AAR and it's not meant to flow like a story. As noted earlier, my internet connection has been very bad lately, so I'm intentionally making short posts to try and avoid a damaging crash. I chose to make this a new installment because this was more about the final events before the Torian war b
Part 21, concluded On December 8th, an interesting but apparently insignificant event occurred as the Enterprise-class TAS Gagarin discovered a pirate Arcean frigate, apparently having been donated to the Korx, with Arcean fleets closing in on it: Unexpectedly, the pirates attacked the Gagarin
Part 21: The Die Is Cast On November 8th, Task Force 16 took part in a joint operation with the Altarians to crush the last two pirate ships located near any strategic location. <img src="http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/qrtxian/qrtxian004/GC2TA_TerranAlliance_1396054842.jpg" alt="" wi
From the description of A History of Benevolence (one of the Altarian starting techs): This inherent ability has only limited use in a technological society. As the rise of the Drengin Empire and Arcean Empire show, technology is the ultimate equalizer.
Welll one of the Altarian factions is clearly descended from the Wraiths of Elemental, one is descended from the other human factions, I wonder what other factions survive into GC3.
I suspect all of the races survive, but they're all "Altarians" now. I get the sense the factions being discussed are those that exist within that broader culture and aren't really racially-based. (In other words, Akari presumably has

Part 20, continued With the collapse of the Korx, the galactic political situation now stood thusly: The continued hostility between the Torians and Krynn was a concern, especially now that the Torians were only fighting weak opponents such as the Drath and Scottlingas. Part 20: The Death of the Korx As I resumed playing, I decided that the time had come to abandon all hope of a peaceful settlement with the Torians. I therefore began making immediate plans for war, including contacting the Altarians to obtain some of their soldiering techs that had proven so effective before.
The offer is appreciated, but I'm fine doing things the way I am. As for the AAR itself, sorry I haven't updated like I planned to. Real life has been distracting, as have certain events within the game itself. The war has begun.
Although, what about the Stellar Folding technology the Terrans could research in TotA? Wouldn't it be sophisticated enough to travel between galaxies? Most importantly because it outright stated that "With infinite energy, one could use Stellar Folding to travel to any point in the galaxy instantaneously."
In theory, maybe, but isn't it a moot point until someone has infinite energy? Honestly, the only 4X game I can think of where the races aren't just broadly-drawn stereotypes is Sword of the Stars, and that's debatable. The Drengin aren't any more one-note then anyone else, and they're so over the top it's entertaining. Also, as Gaunathor notes, we do know a lot about the ways in which they're one-dimensionally evil. And I think it fits together pretty well (for instance, 5 may explain why they hate humans so much).
GalCiv II had an option to tone down the nebulae. There'll probably be one here as well.

True but at the end of the day 'fun' is what people want out of game. There's no formula for it. There's no API for it. There's no middleware for it. There's no design document for it. There's no 'checklist' for it. You play it and it's eitehr fu
The problem is its hard to define a 'good mechanic' in broad terms. A mechanic that works in A, may not work in game B. Even in any game, each mechanic needs to be tweaked and adjusted. You never come up with the magic right off the bat. It's an iterative process. ANd it's also hard to tell the difference between 1) This mechanic is sound we just need to find the sweet spot or <br /
Update coming soon. The Korx are dead.
I can't figure out how to see the "Brad Feedback 031014" file. It says it's a PDF, but it's not opening like one.
Is this just a campaign faction? That story there really doesn't lend itself at all to a normal 4x game start. They have no planet or civilians, it's a war fleet popping out of a pocket dimension. It would be kind of strange if they then started a game with a planet, colony ship, and single unarmed (or armed) flagship, like everyone else.
Yeah, this is something that has occasionally been striking me.
