Very objective, quite thorough, and highly informative. This is a great round-up, Brad- I'm duly impressed by the objectivity, considering your role as head of Stardock.

According to that genealogy, 1999 was a pretty happenin' year. Didn't realize so many of what are considered the "mature" shells (LiteStep, Talisman, Aston) had their roots so recently.
I had exactly the exact opposite observation of WC and fanboys. Still, AltDesk is genuinely one of my fav's - it'd be a pity that people dismiss it because of one or two comments. The least I could contribute on its behalf is my honest assessment.
internetworld7 - I cannot replicate the situtation you describe under WindowsXP, nor with Windows2000, each of which are running McAffee's. The uninstall worked flawlessly on both systems as well. Might be assuming a lot here, but, you did run the uninstaller, right? Also sounds like you didn't search very hard to find skins. Aston's site has a bunch, but you sh
The Stardock programmers and developers have already demonstrated a propensity for taking the existing Microsoft infrastructure and extending it in new and delicious ways. I'm sure the new XAML interface will be a veritable playground for them to try new things. It's still amazing to me how Windowblinds intercepted graphic calls and redirected 'em to its own graphics (I dunno if this is how it currently works). XAML sounds like free-reign territory.
You've got a natural gift at explanation. Concise, yet thorough and easy to follow. Thank you for taking the time to do this, and for sharing it
Can't wait to try out WB5- the screenshots look fantastic! Will finally yield skinners the ultimate frontier of windows skinning: alpha-transparent window-borders/drop-shadows/anti-aliased edges... Will be revolutionary
esg-designs, my submitted brief news articles about skinyourscreen.com and skinwiki going online were rejected. Hope yours gets through.
Brad: Well said. The last paragraph was what I was looking for, specifically. My final question, who owns wincustomize? If it's indeed you, Brad, then I apologize because I've been completely in the wrong here. Is it Stardock, is it the WC staff, etc? Mormegil: It's a good question you posit: I've found I can get my dashboard widgets to the desktop by simply dragging them. Apple apparently doesn't advertise this. Activate the
Brad, I'm afraid it's you who isn't grasping the situtation here (sorry, bud): Apparently you think I'm upset with wincustomize or stardock because they don't support the mac. This is not the case. Although I do prefer the mac, I am not stating that what the mac-users at MicrosoftGadgets.com is good or even acceptable. I've stated at least twice in this thread alone that I'm not happy with their behavior. I completely agree with what Jafo has wise
It's almost as annoying as all the ad-words that appear magically in posted articles here. Even the stuff we type inadvertantly becomes an advertisement. Don't click the "Download," "dialog", or "cell phone" links in the above message: I guarantee that Reppiks didn't insert those links, but someone's aiming to make money off your articles.
Oh, I completely agree! Ignorance is ignorance, and I'm not condoning their actions in any form. I'm simply commenting on how both sides are guilty of this behavior. Obviously, you're a businessman, and to have positive articles regarding operating systems beyond the one you support wouldn't promote your products. I can't knock you for that, although I do believe the objectivity has been lost here. The impression did exist in my mind that this was
The reason I call it out on the "reporting" issue is simply because it's on the front-page of Wincustomize. But I've already lost this war several times here, obviously. I can still give my opinion, however, for which I'm grateful.
Yeah, in 20-20 hindsight, I'd still call Mormegil's statements in his OS X Tiger review as "vile." Check the definition.. Merriam-Webster includes "tending to degrade" and "morally despicable or abhorrent." While not necessarily morally despicable or abhorrent, his description of the mac networking situation and the inability to handle widgets, in addition to tending degrade, blatantly false. If you're free to blog, I'm free to comment. T
That dialog picture looks like it's taking a few tips from Apple's design paradigms: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/OSXHIGuidelines/OSXHIGuidelines.pdf
I still find these front-page opinion-pieces (you'd probably call 'em "reporting") amusing..., but then again one can hardly expect an unbiased approach themselves here anymore. It's sad to see the extremism that either side is willing to resort to in scenarios such as these. Unencouraging to see fellow Apple users behave in the manner witnessed at MicrosoftGadgets. But, then again, there have been some rather scathing statements about Mac
Craeonics- was sarcasm. For some reason the rendering engine here dropped the bracketd " ".\ Latest article on CNET talks about not only how the RSS feeds will be incorporated, but the interface will become decidedly more "Mac" (at least according to their observations). It just seems like MS is clearly running a reactive game instead of proactively trying to innovate. They're grabbing tried and true models of ope

So is there one account that's become your favorite? I sense a good follow-up review here: What's the pros and cons of each, and are there some you recommend above others?
Man, now I got drool on my notebook...
Make a "Section X" that generically permits skins for all the other random skin-schmacky there is on the net. Disobedient admins could be punished by assigning them to moderate the entries
You've still got until 2007 before their complete line is changed over to MacTel, too
Your work seems to entail some Photoshopping, so I'd certainly recommend an iMac G5: nice screen and the power to run Photoshop well. The iBook might not handle Photoshop as easily: 1.2 or 1.33 Ghz G4 processors vs. the iMac's 1.8 or 2.0 Ghz G5, iBook's 256mb stock memory vs. the iMac's 512mb, iBook's DDR266 memory vs. iMac's DDR400, iBook's 32mb video memory vs iMac's 128mb (this alone should convince you, and lastly iBooks 30 or 60gb hard-drives vs
I've had a 15" Powerbook for a little over a month now (decked it out to 1gig memory) and have been EXCEPTIONALLY pleased! It's relatively small and light in comparison to other laptops, but still gives me enough power to run Photoshop well, and has ample screen-space. If the portability of a laptop isn't required, I'd STRONGLY recommend getting an iMac. The prices have down a ton, and come with huge hard-drives, iLife '05, Tiger, and Dual-l
Y'know, I hardly understood anything in there, but the writing was quite good. Natural progression to it. Interesting to see how things can be solved
