or civil unrest develops Very cool ideas... I hope some of this in some form makes it into the diplomatic system for the game

ough that you can't move within. Asteroids, to make an area impassable you'd place a cluster or a debris field of them. Remember this game is about gameplay over realism, so issues like that would be overlooked in favor of gameplay/fun.
I'd be cool with the hands-free rule. That way it's the same as if you're talking to someone in the passenger seat.
The issue of cell-phone bans while driving are more for the sake of everyone driving around you. Same as drunk driving laws. Your right to personal freedom stops when it threatens my personal well-being. Yes, some people can safely talk and drive at the same time. Many however can not. These people pose a threat to everyone around them every time they're yakking on the road. I've been run off the road several times by someone who was on their pho
Word on the street is that the Zoo near SDs offices had a break and some monkeys found their way to Brad's office where they proceeded to trash the server they had the GalCiv 2 code stored on... the only complete copy of the code. So now, they're scrambling for a replacement. I've heard rumor that they're just going to use DesktopX and re-skin Master of Orion 3 <img src="http://images.stardockcentral.net/images/smiles/joke.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmi
Kind of exciting really.
What I've seen of GCII so far absolutely rocks... no question about it. I also enjoyed the editor capabilities introduced in the AP expansion for GCI, even though it was very limited as a result of the core game design. It seems the sequel has a lot of potential to give us players the tools we need to really make a great mod/campaign of our own. I just have a few features that I can rattle off the top of my head that would add a good bit of depth and ope
the Universe as a whole... think the Electron Pump issue from Asimov's The Gods Themselves ) Either way, they could be immensely interesting to work with within the game.
I think it's a result of frustration on the part of developers who have to reinvent themselves every time they move jobs and get stuck working on a new platform. I honestly think that IT people are very lazy, they want to find/create the solution that takes the least amount of effort possible. Sure it may be a large undertaking to create a cross-platform programing framework, but the time and effort savings after it's implemented could more than pay
There is a limit to what can be outsourced overseas. In reality you can only outsource menail, repetitive coding tasks. Maintenance and update stuff. Time and language barriers prevent really complex stuff from moving to India. Also, network management can't be outsourced since you want your staff on-site with the servers in case there's a physical problem. When I say outsourcing in my article, I mean to another US-based company that wou
I've asked the "what about *new* games?" question before, and now I realize that it's not yet a relevant one. Stardock is trying to prove a new business model right now to developers. Companies are probably much more willing to toss in a game they're no longer making noticible revenue from as an experiment. If these older games that aren't making any more money on retail can make money on this new system, then maybe they'd be willing to put up newer
My educated guess based on what I've read: The difference between Multiplicity and Remote Desktop/VNC etc... is that in this case you have multiple physical machines arrayed in front of you. Lets say you have a laptop, and two desktops. If you wanted to use all of them, you had to clutter your desk with keyboards and mice for all of them and would have to physically move yourself or your desk setup a bit every time you switched machines. No
6 months ago I started a new job after having been jobless since graduating from college in December 2003. Well, the place I work for is steadily downsizing IT. I've been through 2 large reorgs and will soon be moving on to my 5th boss in just 6 months. I haven't been on a task or under a manager long enough to gain any traction and actually learn anything useful.
Until the day comes where my mother can plug in a printer she bought at WalMart and have it just run, Linux is not a suitable desktop solution for the masses. Yes, OpenOffice immiates a lot of MS Office functionality... but having used both, I know it doesn't come close in the look and feel, which to most people is just as important if not more so than actual functionality. The OO spreadsheet tool just *feels* kludgier (even though I know it'
This article and the comments on your previous article reminded me of a song by the comedy group Three Dead Trolls In A Baggie called Every OS Sucks "Then there's Leenux or Linux, don't know how you say it How you install it, or use it or play it, Or where you download it, or which programs run, But Leenux or Linux don't look like much fun. But "Hey!" they say, "It's getting great press" Though how it survives i
I like to think that those of us who straddle the gap (I use Mac, Windows, Linux and occassionally hard-core UNIX) as the truely enlightened ones. We're the ones that "get it", that no one platform is absolutely superior to another, that each has it's good points and bad points and they all fill a given role. Here's how I use 'em: PC for gaming/coding Linux/UNIX for network & servers Macs for ease of use.. and as a quasi-UNIX en
Yeah, I noticed that thread after I created this one. It's taking care of my questions. THere will be booster packs for additional tokens.
I think aeryck has a built-in filter, if he/she says more than 5 words that somehow manage to string together in a sentence that makes sense, it then fills in another 50 or so words that make no sense whatsoever. On-topic though... I eagerly await JU launching the subscription service. Definitely something that would be worthwhile for me.
Brad- Sorry for the misinformation on the game a month bit, it was a misinterpretation of what you guys said on my part. Will there be a way to incrementally buy additional tokens aside from the $70 for 10 plan once you already have a subscription?
Will there be a way to purchase additional tokens? I would hate to have my 2 year sub, hit year 1.5 and realize that MegaGame V (Sequel to mega-hit MegaGame IV) is about to come out, but I'm a token short... or worse, completely out of tokens. Would I have to sink another $70 into the system? Maybe a slightly discounted price per token could be done for any tokens beyond the original 10 given. <p
k, back to your regularly scheduled thread... sorry UF
JesseJ- Actually JU and WC are linked. I know articles from here show up there. It probably works the other way around too. Messy could very well have posted this through WinCustomize.
Since you guys are using DesktopX to do the UI, will it be possible for an enterprising DesktopX developer to make a customized UI for the game? Sort of how Blizzard allows for UI Mods with WoW. Just an odd thought.
s. I think of this mostly from the perspective of creating interesting user campaigns and scenarios (assuming that we get a editor tool ala what we had with AP... but... with better functionality)
ially loved the image of the planet with a cowboy hat... or the shark ships... There was so much personality to that incredibly simple game.
