Just to follow up. The guys in the mirc chatroom mentioned above helped me narrow down the problem with what had happened to me and a few others. In my case, it was some lines in the config.sys that hadn't been replaced correctly by the bootdisk. The perils of downloading as a beta user as soon as possible. :) I've used the new SDC version now, rebooted twice, zero problems. They've fixed the deletion problem, by all accounts. :)

I am win98 (old oem version) and finished downloading GalCiv. Thought everything was fine, but I hadn't rebooted yet. For some reason the game crashed after the intro movie (it had worked in the previous beta build I had - the one before gamma) so I figured I'd reboot, assuming that since I had the 99b version of Stardock I would be safe and sound. An interesting game that doesn't seem to get mentioned often, but it definitely similar to all three, or perhaps a bit of an intermediary between the GalCiv/Moo3 and SFC takes on space strategy is Starships Unlimited: Divided Galaxies. Just though I'd pipe up, since I've had almost as much with it as I have with the GalCiv beta. :) Matrix Games is the distributor if you're curious. And it was primarily created by a single independent developer! Shocking! ;)

Cool link Steevodeevo! Good old Fermi's Paradox. An interesting book about the issue is Rare Earth, though I read it a couple of years ago, so hey, things seem to be changing in astrophysics at, uh, light speed. Who knows, all those SETI cpus chugging away could always turn something up.... ;)

I've only been playing for a couple of weeks, and this is about my fifth game (medium sized galaxy this time). Haven't posted before and have learned a lot about the various errors and variable interactions by following the forum now and then. :) Anyway. 1) Early-midgame the Venge 'event' took place.
