A good thing about Linux, you shouldn't need alot of space. If you wanted to, you could get away by putting it on a 8.4GB drive. But, it just depends on what you can get ahold of.
I prefer Nvidia over ATI. But like thatoneguyinslc said, it depends on what you are planning on doing. I've seen alot of benchmark tests that show you what each one scored higher on. If you're into gaming, go with the GeForce.

I don't own a Mac, but I would still buy one just to have one. Just having the knowledge is a good thing. PCs and Macs have good and bad things to them, if you have both, then you're getting closer at having the whole picture. Add Linux and Unix in there and you pretty much have the whole. If you have the $ then go for it It would be easier, plus you will have plenty of space still. Just keep in mind to let GRUB take over the Windows boot when you do it.

I just can't see how you're having so many problems. I'm almost positive that you can just resize the partition in the Windows Disk Manager.Then install Linux in the unallocated partition. It shouldn't be harder then that.
