Well, it was initially set to ship in 2004, so I'll be 2 years with the current schedule.

There has been a noticable increase in Longhorn talk lately. And I'm going to add to it. I just had a look at Paul Thurrott Supersite for Windows and noticed he had updated his 2005 article of "The Road to Windows "Longhorn" . I found a number of interesting things. The Roadmap and Release Schedule was updated. Don't think there was mu
Fully agree the point about the script editor.
March 7, 2005 Paul Thurrott updated his The Road to Windows "Longhorn" 2005 article. It got information about the milestone release date, the different flavours of Longhorn and also included a Recommended Hardware list. It's an interesting article on what to expect and it shows that XP won't be like Longhorn just because Avalon, Indigo and WinFS get backported. There is also three very nice screenshots from Longhorn running the Aero int
Latest article at Paul Thurrott's site on Longhorn is http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/longhorn_preview_2005.asp
Just a couple of quotes from http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/longhorn_preview_2004.asp And let me dispel a major misconception: The inclusion of Avalon on Windows XP does not mean that XP is getting the Longhorn user interface. It's
The official support channel for any Stardock product is [email protected]. I'll file a bug report if it turns out this exists in DX3 as well. When you say running DX as a shell, do you mean running it instead of explorer.exe? DX is not meant as a shell replacement as it does not have many of the features programs rely on from explorer.exe. DX is a desktop enhancement and is best run on top of the native explorer shell.
I checked the latest DX 2.40f[a].002 with transparent png files and I noticed the issues you mentioned. Can anyone with DesktopX 3 try this out? If it turns out to be the same I want to send a bug report. ( BetaguyGZT: did you send a bugreport when you ran into the problem?) Othervise I'll just leave it and wait for DX3. I uploaded the objects I used for my test at my websi
When I said "native painting" I meant when it's painting the visual styles. Not the plain GUI.
Wouldn't it be great if DX had the option to create Screensavers. Screensavers are normal programs except it has to handle the extra messages sent to and from the system.
And don't forget that Windows also uses it own processes for handling the GUI painting. It's just hidden in one of them svchost.exe processes running on your computer. There's been tests done and they show that WB in some cases are actually faster than Windows native painting. However, it depends on what skin and system configuration you got. A poorly designed skin or a system not in tune can go sluggish with WB, but most often not.
Why do you think WinFS is going to be shipped after and how exaclty ould we install such a file system after already using the current one on our computers for the first some odd months before WinFS ships? WinFS does not replace NTFS, it will lay ontop of it. Thay is why you will be able to use it on XP
And Avalon will be availible on XP. Everything else you hear about Longhorn is mostly just fluff. It's really about Avalon. Without Avalon, there's not much point to Longhorn in my view. I disagree with that. All the pillars of Longhorn will be interesting. All though WinFS won't be in Longhor
Hmm.. It'd be nice to port this into DesktopX. Is there much more than on the screenshot? Don't see why everything has to be named Aero or Longhorn these days, but this is actually one of the few I really find good. Imagine how it's features could be extended by the comming DesktopX 3.
Oh! Didn't see that comment. My bad.
Yes, even though the three pillars of Longhorn (WinFS, Avalon and Indigo) will be ported back to XP, I still think there will be many other reasons to upgrade to XP.
It's because people use VBScript as default. I'm using JScript, but got no examples yet. I'll upload some when I've got my hands on DX3 and had some time to play around with my ideas.
IUPUI: You'll find that it's most likely your laptops built-in graphics card that causes the slowdown. The products from SD doesn't not require the latest of computers to run smoothly, but a ok graphics card. I'm guessing that the laptops graphicscard didn't have hardware acceleration. Running on a computer with hardware acceleration and you shouldn't notice much performance difference.
It's allready been said that Avalon and Indigo will be backported to XP, but now we will get WinFS as well according to the latest news going around. Some people are wondering if there will be any point of upgrading with so much beeing backported, others disagree. One of the reasons for WinFS beeing backported is to make it more widely adopted and usable. The next few years will be interesting to see where Microsoft will be going.
Uti non abuti. (Latin I think...) Use, don't abuse.
Because there is no inherent functionality within windows that allows you to create your own skins. WindowBlinds works by hooking into the Window processes while StyleXP cracks/hacks your windows system files. (WB4 works on XP and 2000, earler versions also worked ont he Win9x series. StyleXP works only on XP) The .msstyles that exists in XP where meant only to be created by Microsoft.
Very interesting article. However, there is a couple of things I want to point out. For the preference box, it'd be very practical if the script obtainted a list of drives that can be measures and then populate the list. Otherwise you'd have to manually configure it your self. And that isn't very conveniant for users to will be using the client only version of DX. For instance, I have 2 hard drives split into a total of 8 partitions. O
Would it be possible for Stardock to make it possible to add widgets to Windows Toolbars? I'd quite like to add widgets to my startbar. I know I can reproduce the taskbar in OB, but it'd make it so much easier to just put them into a toolbar band.
What is this about? I must have missed out.
I'd say using someones sourcecode is the same as using someones images. It's all something someone has put work and effort into and should be credited accordingly. And I'm pretty sure the copyright law applies here as well.
