I think they grayness might be something to take another look at. Where it fades to gray it almost appear to me as the old Win95 appearance is gleaming through. Perhaps try using the same brown base colour, but darken or lighten it.
I'm getting curious about OS/2. A bit late perhaps. But I had never heard of OS/2 in the days of Win3.1. Mind you that I was about 8-9 or something then. But is this OS availible now? As a legacy product? (Like BeOS) Or is it completely out of circulation?

I know that in older version of WB there was an option to make the background of Explorer transparent, even tint it. I can't remember if it simply set a registry setting (in that case it should be possible to set it without WB) or if it was a WB specific feature. I did a quick search, but I couldn't find any useful info.
