Almost sounds like he is afraid that you'll go away too. Do you know the date when dad will be home? If you do maybe you could get out a calendar and count the days away. It might help to see that it is getting closer and 'later' has a set time to it. Or not, I'm not a parent...

Don't sneak up on her, lay a trap. Rig up a camera (without flash) to go off every minute or two in a place she spends time in. Sure, you'll get lots of bad pictures, but if you take enough some of them will come out well. Might want to use a digital camera to save on film costs. Or a webcam type, wire a few up around the house at various angles. Then no sneaking, just wait and when you get a truly amazing picture, show her the proof of her beauty
