"I find constructor ships very cheap to build by midgame. usually my production planet is churning them out in about 2 turns, that's nothing." Oh, I do, too. Problem is, you won't make it to mid-game without strong resistance from the AI! This means your money will be tied up in getting ready for heavy battles, etc. Now, if you are playing it with 4 Good v 2 Evil and using partners in war, then it's considerably easier. Try setting 3 to Pure-Evil, 2 to Good ... then play a

"your Frigate USS Zapper hit the (insert race and ship name here) for 15 points with its phaser. or somethign like that..." Great idea! Do like they have it in Wizardy 8 with lost hitpoints each strike come floating up off the attackee and fade with text report coming simulateously at the bottom of the interface screen.

Well, hey, fellow SMACer! :) I, too, am happy to wait for the 'stable' releases of these updates. And I'm also glad that there are folks helping to test the incremental ones, since things like tech-trading balances take some time in the wild before they are tamed.

Retail folks who do not use Stardock (I can't because I don't have Net at home, only work) have to wait for normal patch schedule. "Similar to normal games" or something like that, Brad said. Brad listed the fixes on a thread around here somewhere. The most interesting one (to me) is a change to how the AI handles tech trades...

I see that trend. Keep in mind that the Evil dudes are set to focus on military, etc., and they must then conquest to keep up with money and such. So Good must help each other out, particularly earlier on. Gotta love how team play with a COMPUTER AI is so darn fun! On the Yor point, I've seen the Evil AIs get bad starting positions, at which point they lose their entire advantage. So you can use the ctrl+N command to reseed the galaxy as best you can to ensure everybody has a good m

I've only played 5 games (lost first 3 on Normal while I was learning). At Challenging (all AIs to 'Bright') the AI was smarter for a while about tech values, which made a big difference early on to my ability to get cash. Later, though, they became quite needy of tech., so there you go. I think the biggest thing to remember is that if you're staying on the Good side of the battle, Evil has only two players, so it's rather easy to gang up on the bad guys. A fairer fight, say putting

Sure. It was Normal AI (no change in their moral starting), small map. Some ideas: 1) I believe this was before the patch, if that makes a difference. 2) Maybe you actually get a bonus on smaller maps? Don't know. I might bring my saves in to work, install the game, and post the scores on Metaverse. I have no connection at home, so this is a bit cumbersome.

Not sure if this will help, but: "1) Change the ground combat...how it is now is very lame. There needs to be some way to build ground defenses/space defenses." Yes, this is on the simple side. While there are troops adjustments to be made through tech, etc., the only space defenses I see are having ships in orbit and getting plantary defenses. I guess I see the battle as already won more or less if I'm allowed to hover in your space, though I can see your point. "2)

Eichen: Fair enough, and there's no surprise that different players value things differently. I'm happy, though, you are waiting for patches because, as I'm sure you've seen, Brad and Co. are dedicated in a real way to improvements based on fan feedback. If you have problems with the core system, of course, this is less likely to be of use to you, but I definitely think you should keep checking back in! ;)

"The proxy attacks, i think this is working fine, your covertly funding them, the other Civ may suspect but cannot prove it, i would like to see you lose a point of umm "Friendlyness" with them tho, as they see you suspiciously. We all know some countries fund others, give them military, but you dont see anyone declaring war on China for funding korea!" Interesting point. Well, I see 'funding' a civ already at war in one light...but bribing them TO GO to war is another more serious mat

[Intended for those sitting on the fence about GalCiv. I'm not trying to preach to the choir!] We are seeing the makings of a classic here, folks! A quick summary of my plus and minuses after some serious play time (30 hours+, 4 games --3 on 'Normal' AI and 1 on 'Tough') should make this clear. If you care to, you can also see what my very first impressions were here: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=81866 The Good (so many!): --The summa

I have *no* problem with the alliance victory being hard. Heck, I worked my back-side off to get it this close in my current game. However, if you've research the required tech, the *option* simply MUST appear on the screen! If you offer an alliance to somebody who is NOT close to you, then the AI should just reply: "Sorry, we are not close enough." As it stands, it looks like a bug. After all, what is the negotiations screen for if you can't offer stuff that will b

Hey, Arne Heyden: Yea, though I'm running my 'review in progress' over there still! LOL Well, thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to wait for the major updates. No big problem, I guess, because we know Brad is no flake...

Sorry if this has been asked, but there's a lot of confusion (for me, at least) about Stardock regarding whether or not if once I install it will I be able to download this latest patch (update, as Brad says!) as a standalone .exe so I can take it home and install it? I only have Internet at work...

2 Replies 210 Views

Hmmm, that might be it. "Friendly" won't work? I not, this is a problem with this screen, I think. The Alliance option simply *must* appear on your screen once you've researched it! It would then be up to the AI to decline. This is just common sense...or am I smoking something bad here? LOL
