I'll be damned... right now, everything seems to be running fine. I don't know why. Since the last time that I've seen the problem, I haven't updated drivers or the BIOS, nothing. I've tried starting GC2 (0.91[b].002) with and without /usepmtimer, powercycled the system and it just didn't occur. Until today, just about every time I started the game, the problem was there. Today, I tried several times and all is smooth. I'll now be in the cor

Video card is a Geforce 6800GT, 81.98 drivers CPU: Athlon X2 4200+ Mainboard: MSI Neo4 Platinum (nForce4 ultra chipset, latest BIOS) So far, GalCiv2 is one of two games I tried that had really bad timing issues (as in "unplayable"). Some other games tend to be just slightly "nonlinear" or lose network connection when run on both cores, some run perfectly fine.
It pretty certainly doesn't help. It was one of the things I tried early in the Serious Sam 2 debacle, and it had no effect at all. It's still installed. Other things that several people tried were the hotfix and the /usepmtimer boot option which also had no effect. Ultimately, Croteam rewrote the whole timing code (at least according to what's been said in the forums). From a developer's point of view, this might be interesting: <a href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/libr
Well, I sure hope you get the timing stuff cleaned up by then, or I'll have yet another game that doesn't run properly, and I'll be forced to pester the forums about it. Luckily, I'll have quite some stuff to cut&paste from the Serious Sam 2 forums (just gotta remember to replace the game name).
Whatever you do, don't get a dualcore or even multiple CPUs. There are very few developers who seem to be able to write proper code for those.
Game runs much too quick on an Athlon X2 (spinning ships and planets more or less random, can scroll off the map in no time). Pretty much makes the game unplayable. See previous report here: https://www.galciv2.com/Forums.aspx?ForumID=274&AID=95579
The bug is still there in both the most recent 0.81.something and 0.91[b].002
Bump and update: with version 0.80a[b].002, this problem still exists. I tried switching between a single core and both cores. (Alt-Tab now seems to work, cheers!) With affinity set to a single core, rotating views of planets and ships are at least consistent, planets are spinning at somewhat random speeds though. I had earth spinning very slowly in the planet window, tabbed out, switched to two CPUs. then is was just randomly rot
What can I say? This. Is. Hilarious! The kids are getting Viagra and porn spam anyway, so anyone old enough to play WoW shouldn't have a problem with it IMAO.
Could it be that GC2 uses the TSC as timer (via RDTSC or whatever)? Until today, I got strange behaviour from time to time with planets spinning too fast in overview windows, but today I activated Cool'n'Quiet and it's all too fast. Edge scrolling takes me beyond the limits of the map (I've been at coordinates like 59000:something!), planets are a blur and the ship preview in the "new game" dialogs is also just a wee bit too fast (meaning that it's abo
It works for me without the fix... Version 0.80[b].008 just downloaded via SDC. Geforce 6800GT, 81.95 drivers. I can start a new game without problems, even after moving the old folder out of the way.
We don't like it either. But Microsoft is pushing for companies to use it. And they're damn right to do it, IMNSHO. Putting savegames and configs in the install directory is a disease from the happy old DOS days. Today, Windows is a multi-user system that should separate data from programs. A well-pr
Ive avoided buying several games lately (i.e. X3) due to the fact they use Starforce. Glad to see I'm not alone.
The shipyard still gets stuck and can't be closed occasionally. Only way out seems to be killing the game. The game crashes after Alt-Tabbing out and back in. CPU is an A64 X2, Graphics: Geforce 6800GT w/81.something drivers. Might be an SMP issue?
Spinning with dual core processer still way to fast. fixed by setting to one processer with imagecfg Do you have the MS Hotfix? Did you try the /usepmtimer option? Or does Stardock use the TSC directly instead of a sane timer?
It'd be a good idea to create a pure black and white A4 or letter version for those who only get the download version of the game. Printing a booklet PDF with background is a waste of both toner/ink and paper.
Or just "tick 35.1922 after contact". Granted, the short form "35.1922AC" would read somewhat like the output of a power supply
The research matrix also needs zoom IMAO. Due to the color coding, that might be useful even at levels where you can't read the entries anymore, but you would see how far you got in certain areas. At least make it more compact so that more stuff can be displayed, it's more confusing than anything right now. A "compass" on the main map would be nice. The minimap provides a virtual "north", but I would like not having to look at the viewport outline on the MM just to see what direction
Didn't get the chance to try a lot of things, but I had something "funny": The ship construction window didn't close. Apparently, almost all visible controls were working, but I couldn't use "done" or "save" or leave the window in any other way. I could however pull up some info windows like ship- or planet list over the construction window, and when I pulled up the contect area, it went up behind the construction window. It almost seemed t
And make gladiators fights too ? Football? Ice hockey? Anyway, Civ4 still uses that retarded "strategic resources" system where you can't build quite vital units unless you have access to a randomly placed resource that pops up only after you invent the unit in question. That's what killed Civ3
For civilization types, see here: (ARGH! How do link tags work? The JScript stuff is broken and the url tags seem to end URLs un underscores! Just search Wikipedia for "Kardashev scale"). Basically, it's a scheme to classify how advanced a civilization is based on how good it is at mutilating space-time and expanding through the universe. Currently, we are awy pre-Type-I. Having a Dyson sphere in the classical sense would make expansion somewhat useless since you'd get an inhabitable su
So what did happen to all the females in the future? Did they get tired of the males wasting their time with pointless video games and sports broadcasts? Maybe they relocated to a universe where the guys are more interested in fashion and romance? Maybe they became the Drengin?
Of course you'd see what you think they have or what they're ready to trade. Yes, I see the problem too. To make this system work properly, you'd have to achieve a rather high intel level for efficient technology trading and/or have the player choose what to show to others. As ist is now (in GC1), it's a very rough version of the "know all" system. You can get knowledge about the other races by just having a look at the trade lists and your own tech list. It
IMO, this should be made an effect of intelligence. If you have an appropriate intel level on another race, there'd be nothing to say against displaying that info in the research info in something like a field in the tech info screen or a tooltip displaying races that have it, races that don't have it and races we don't know zilch about. It could be a simple list with races listed in green (have it), "standard text color" (don't have it) and something darker (don't k
I had a similar problem. Reinstalling SDCentral solved it. Make sure you get the most recent version.
