@Exodious: I guess it would be hard to instate them as a superpower if they'd be put on the map like the other minors (100 million people, no money, "average" tech).
Could it be that this is the effect of a sticking mouse button that I seem to encounter from time to time? It happens that if I drag around the map view and release the button, the map view still sticks to the cursor; but that normalizes after some clicking.
I guess we'll know when he posts something like the "Frogboys reasons to quit and never work again" thread. But seriously, I haven't seen anything about the game in magazines or other media here in Germany; I actually saw the game for the first time mentioned on slashdot when it went gold. Without "serious" "media" coverage and shelfspace, it probably won't get so much attention; the top 10 placement on amazon.com (although impressive) could very well be the goldrush by 80% of the saliv
Just give all your systems to another race, works quite fine as surrender. :p
I could try that sometime tomorrow from a savegame shortly after the event was triggered. I'll just park 8 battleaxes or something around the system to avoid recolonization.
I wonder what would happen when you evacuate the system in question when told so. Anyone tried that?
I got them down with about ten dreadnaughts and some dozen battleaxes. Just make sure that you don't let them conquer your planets. And pray that you are on good terms with your neighbours because if you survive, you'll have one heck of a time explaining to them just why they shouldn't invade you right away. ;p At the level of battleships though, it's gonna be messy and you probably won't survive the show.
Happened to me today. I was going for some kind of victory against the Altarians when it started to happen. I was on good terms with them and about equally strong. We had just wiped out the Torians and were alone on the map. Now that big fat evil comes all over me and the next thing I know is that the Altarians want money from me. Question: Is it worth the time and effort to try and continue the game against "normal" difficulty Altarians? I'm ethically good, so I don't think they'll go
Typo: Empire Settings (at start of game) -> Modify abilities -> Speed. Effect described as "+n parcecs", should probably be "parsecs" ~SDC~
A quick workaround might be to delete the bink animations from the GalCiv installation. You lose a bit of atmosphere that way, but it should at least be playable then.
The effect that the cultural influence is reset after a reload has been discussed several times. It happens because of the rather complicated influence calculation and should be back to normal in a few turns.
I actually had the alliance option available late in my first game. It seems you have to almost max out you relations to the other race in order to propose an alliance. I think the game just doesn't let you propose it as long as there would be no chance of success. Remember that it is a very powerful instrument that's a necessity for a victory condition, so if it would be too easy to ally with other races, the diplomatic victory would be not so much of a task. That's no moon.
Some time ago, I actually put some thought into an "evacuate Earth in 6 months" scenario, and I came up with numbers that were staggering. Considering a population of 6 billion (6e9) people to be evacuated in 180 days, you'd have to put close to 1.4 MILLION poeple into ships PER HOUR. Nonstop, 24/7. Putting my record planet population in GalCiv (21bn) into a colony ship in 1 month would push that number to a little over 29 million/hour. So even if you could build a ship large enough, you'd have
Ability to play OGG files. 75% of my collection is encoded as OGG :notsure: (shouldn't be too hard to implement, the library has an easy interface) ~SDC~
Why didn't it kill my Windows installation? I need to install anyway... ;) Otherwise, I'm a little depressed by the fact that the "normal" AI just ignores my presence and the Torians and Drengin eradicate me while they're going at each other. Always. There's no way around it. I don't want to play on beginner level, that's just boring. Guess I'm gonna eat something and give it another try. Great game, wish I'd be better at playing it. ~SDC~
It's unreadable in Acrobat, but a printout looks nice. Except for some graphics. The main screen description picture and the tech tree picture are too coarse to make out anything.
A little difficult, but I'd really like it: show the techs as a tech-tree, perhaps like it's done in Civ3. That way, dependencies would be much easier to resolve. The science advisor in that game was a blessing that I'm missing in GalCiv. @idleprocess: why not wish for the whole way? Move the whole discussion forum to a news-server. (OK, would be hard for SDC because IE can't handle news) ~SDC~
They are used for voting on resolutions in the UP. When you vote they're used up and then accumulate again over time. Selling them just gives your trade partner so much points for the next meeting. ~SDC~
Just a dumb question: what is the supposed behaviour when sumbitting? Should it just "do magic" for a while and then go on to the main menu? And what mail address am I supposed to enter, the one I use to login on galciv.com or the one I used to order the game? I submitted a game and my profile shows the player name I registered, but it's shown with 0 games and it's been over a day now. ~SDC~
Yep, after such a random event (class +14, 2 sectors range), the Torians had about 8 or so class 31 (thirty-one) planets. Frickin' insane, they had only three systems and dominated a medium size galaxy in about 5 years. BTW, is it a coincidence that the image of those planets resemble the "Gaia" class from Ascendancy so much? ;) ~SDC~
In some other thread, Frogboy said there were privacy concerns to be considered befor that feature would go live. The first thing you'll see will probably game updates with AI based on the games uploaded.
(Hope I'm getting this right) If you're having problem installing from "download&archive"-zipfiles, just make sure no downloads are running, empty your SDCentral\Temp directory and unpack the zipfile to that directory (make sure you're unzipping with correct paths; if after unzipping the ini file is directly under the Temp-folder, it's OK). Then install the package. Works like a charm for me, it seems the restore funktion is a little dud. ~SDC~
OK, just finished my first game on a 5x5 map with all races set to "beginner". It was a bit too easy, especially because the Drengin eliminated the Yor early in the game. Otherwise, it's been more fun than my first game of Civ3. I hope the AI starts counteracting my strategy on higher levels. Basically I just waited and delivered Frigates like mad while steadily expanding my cultural influence. ~SDC~
There was a UP resolution to have me pay 3% of my income to all other races. On the "Enforced Laws" display, this is shown as "Effective through year 2194, String Not Found". ~SDC~
