OK, now I'm oficially amazed. I removed SDC and installed it from the file I distinctly remember installing it from last time. Now, it's looking totally different, updated to 2.00.296, build 61 (!!), and - best of all - it's actually working.

Can it be that SDC still has problems with backup files not created by archiving after installation? I tried installing from an archive right now, and after restarting SDC, it had forgotten anything about it. ~SDC~
Sorry, should've been SDC 2.00.294 ~SDC~
Hi, I wanted to install GC again after some time off, but something is wrong. The download aborts at the file English.st_ with those logfile entries: Downloading: D:\Spiele\SDCentral\temp\Base\Data\deathknight.shi_ Result: Success Downloading: D:\Spiele\SDCentral\temp\Base\Data\English.st_ Result: Failed (attempt 1) Downloading: D:\Spiele\SDCentral\temp\Base\Data\English.st_ Result: Failed (attempt 2) Downloading: D:\Spiele\SDCentral\temp\Base\Data\En
One reason for multiple starbases per sector (and I'm talking of quite a lot here) would probably be sector defense and ship repair. Those are two things that would even in reality profit from a big lot of infrastructure (more repair docks in range, more Big Lasers to dismantle enemy ships ans do on). The same would probably also go for production and research. There are many linear sequences of development in starbase design right now (battle stations, cultural palace stuff, some prod
If Earth is your best planet then sending all freighters from Sol is indeed a good thing to do
... unless you're planning a war and Sol is in an exposed position. In that case, it might be wise to have some trade routes from other planets that are better shielded from enemy attacks. It really sucks to have some damn Drengin dreadnaughts sitting along your main stream of income and shooting it. ~SDC~
Loading a medium game crashed it here. According to the pinned bog report thread, loading old savegames is not recommended; so if you're in a good game finish that first. I think it would be a good idea to have proper version information in the savegames to avoid such things. Having a dialog box say "sorry, this game cannot be loaded" would be better than the "where are all my strategic resources" moment someone had. ~SDC~
Huh? So the publisher for the German version went gung-ho and put a CD check on there?!? ~SDC~
With stardock's distribution concept there's a certain difficulty with reselling stuff you bought from them; the only thing that makes your copy a legitimate one might be the Stardock/drengin.net account. Remember that you don't have to buy the CD... So it would be interesting to know the official position on this.
Destroying a colony to avoid the Draginol was somewhat useless for me. I evacuated the planet, destroyed the colony, waited two years and re-colonized the planet. About a year later, BLAM! Draginol. OK, I was prepared and had some troop transports parked nearby, but it was strange. The funny part was that I had colony ships from each major race parked on the far side of the blockade fleet for two years LOL
The AI seems to be pretty much unwilling to be friends with anything less than an equal force... I liked the Altarians pretty much (relations were friendly) until they squished the Torians and became somewhat stronger than me. From then on, relations dropped rapidly to "cold". And just to think I helped them by culturally conquering the Torians smaller planets by cultural means gives me the creeps. I mean, why didn't the damn Torians just surrender to me like the Drengin and Yor did before they
Probably it's just their way of pressing Ctrl-N? ;) I had a Drengin doing that long-range colonization game today and was a little baffled about it. Do the other races choose (some of) their attributes/abilities - perhaps even based on the map - or is this all hardcoded? ~SDC~
Yes, the attacker always has a rather huge advantage up to something like 15:1 if the defender is out of luck. It's explained somewhere in the manual. If you want to hold off transports, a single scout should do the trick if the transport is alone. Otherwise, you'd better build some defenders or better. Later in the game, you also get improvements to soldiering ability, which could help in defending the planet. Overall: orbital defense is about the last line you have. Once they're on th
More pseudo-scientifically speaking, a sector would be a part of a (more or less) circular thing (think of piecharts here) and a parsec describes the distance at which the radius of Earths' orbit (=1AU) around the sun appears to span an angle of one second; that's about 3.26 lightyears. ;)
IMHO, it's a bigger problem than it seems at first. It severely pushes the game off-balance early on if you're rapidly going for conquest victory because you might find yourself fighting an alliance way too early. A friend of mine had such a situation yesterday about 2 years into a game when the Alatrians declared war on him and the Arceans joined right in. Hidden support is one thing, open warfare is another. This one badly needs a fix.
There are random events that change the classes of planets in 9 sectors by up to +14 (or even more?). If one of those occurs, you'll suddenly have a whole bunch of highly wanted planets around, so having "useless" systems makes sense and having control over large clusters of rocks could even make you win the game. I don't think diversifying planets would do the game much good. It would surely add a whole bunch of clutter and pseudo-complexity. The way it is, you go for a single criteriu
You can also set the installation path in Tools -> Register Products ~SDC~
Weird crash problem, probably with the Draginol event. (Thread too full for me to see if it's been mentioned before... lazy me) I had saved a game directly after I got the message that something strange was going on. First I ignored it, the Draginol came and effectively wiped me out; but there was no crah anytime in that game. Now, I loaded the game, evacuated and destroyed the colony, placed a defensive ring around the system and waited for something to happen. What happens is
Perhaps someone mixed up the files on the California server? ~SDC~
I had the update shown after switching to the Atlanta server (had it set to California sometime) ~SDC~
Getting another package would probably be the easiest way to handle this...
From my experience: I found 500M colonists to be a good number for class 15 and up and so far never had real problems with morale. OK, I lost elections sometimes, but overall I never got the "unhappy" symbol. Population growth should slow down at a sensible threshold depending on planet quality, perhaps read the economy info in the encyclopedia, it describes some undocumented mechanisms. And at +40% pop growth (best 4 points I ever wasted), it's easy to steadily colonize from a
24. Wow, first time I don't feel old on a game forum. (I know, many said that before, but it's still a good feeling LOL )
Yep, they're hard, especially the Overlords with 47 or so attack value. IMHO, this event should depend on the culture it's happening in having at least dreadnaught technology or even some of those units (or stronger) built. The only other chance would be to stack some dozen battleaxes as defence in each system, that got them down relatively well (one OL had only 5HPs left after it stripped 5 or 6 systems off all defenses). Making this one depend on strong military could add a nice - tho
