Hello, I've been loving the game, but today after I finished a round I passed my iPad to my son at a point where I was given the choice of paying gold to unlock character avatars. One of us must have tapped one and *poof* nearly all of my gold was blown on a purchase I never would have made. PLEASE consider putting a confirmation button in for these, and any of the other in-game currency transactions.

Sorry if this isn't the appropriate place to pose this question. I purchased GalCiv a while back and the upcoming release of The Political Machine has me tempted to give Drengin.net a try. Is there a reduced cost for current owners of GalCiv? I could have sworn there was (at least at one time) but I didn't see any mention of it browsing the Drengin.net site just now. I'm still likely to check it out anyway, but if I can save a little $$$... Thanks in advance for any replies!

I agree that something should be done, whether it's something like "wealth", splitting unused resources amongst areas that are producing something, etc. In the meantime, I'd recommend setting planets to build Anti-matter missiles. They take a relatively long time to build (more so than Constructors) so you're not bombarded with lots of new ships every turn, are dirt cheap to maintain, and can be very useful. Nothing like turning back an invasion, or destroying starbases without even using any

[droll] Gee... Imagine that, a game with some manual ommissions/errors. How often does that happen? [/droll] Sorry. I'm not saying it's OK for a game manual to have such problems, but it's not the end of the world, nor deserving of such criticism from you. FWIW the online manuals and such (check out your GalCiv directory) do a much better job of things. Actually, considering how much has changed and been added to the game (through the excellent support the game has been given) it's

Coffeedragon - That won't work. The negative, long term effects of various invasion tactics don't take place unless you successfully invade the planet. It doesn't make much real-world sense, but that's the way the game works. They want to discourage people from doing that otherwise it'd be a realtively easy way to trash the AIs. Trust me, I tried to do it one game and noticed the target planets weren't going down in level (I was using Mass Drivers... just wanted to trash planets rath

Lokiju, Sorry to hear you're having troubles. For what it's worth though, the incremental improvements haven't been all *that* frequent, and there have been what... 3 conventional, downloadable patches since the game was released, 1 1/2-2 months ago? You should be just fine with the conventional ones. Not to mention you might avoid some of the many problems some people have had trying to use Stardock.

Tax rate affects how much cash is generated on your planets. Spend rate affects how much of that cash is *spent* on military/social/research... depending on what you've set those sliders to. If you set it to 50% spending your planets will spend half of their tax income on building/research, the other half will go to the treasury. In short, it affects how quickly your planets will build stuff and/or contribute to research. Combined, these two sliders give you two ways to affec

The whale and potted plant are from the sci-fi/comedy book The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. As noted above another element from the book is the "Infinite Improbability Drive"... which is basically a super-duper fast engine that when used created all sorts of random gobbledygook. When first used in the book, the ship arrives in orbit along with a whale and a potted plant that the drive "spawned". Trouble is they spawn outside the ship and quickly get pulled down into the planet. T

I've seen the Drengin get wiped out a few times, but usually they just get a bite taken out of them. Strangely, the Yor haven't lost any planets to the actual event as far as I can tell from my games. Perhaps they got lucky, or shifted more to neutral. They are usually target #1 for the Fundies once they get themselves in order. My very first game of GalCiv (which gave me an initially kind of annoyed opinion of the game) was going as smoothly as any first game goes until the Fundies

I rarely have any of the 3 spending fields below 40%. I try my best to develop in stages. For example... - 50/50 Military and Research early on. Planets build Colony Ships and Constructors, warships as needed. I focus research on what are to me the basic improvements... Manufacturing, Banking, and Research Centers, Fusion Power Plants, the Habitat improvement and the Manufacturing and Economic Capitals. - Once those techs (plus Trade) are researched I've usually colonize th

Joel... and by such a wide margin I question the validity of anyone who says Mike. Crow Warrior of the Lost World Few shorts really stood out to me... they were usually good for little more than a chuckle. As it's the only one I can remember off-hand I'll go with "Let's Have a Patrick Swayze Christmas!" But anything from the Joel years is better than the Mike years.

I recently finished a crippling level game where I never fired a shot, nor was I ever shot at. I started with +20 in Diplomacy, built Diplomatic Translators (and kept them from the other races)... and used that diplomatic edge to my advantage. Early on, I just bought peace with everyone. Sure I was in the hole a little longer than I wanted... and was called a "cheese eating surrender monkey" more than I care to admit, but it worked. When Defensive Phasers rolled around I built up a s

Daveman thinks back to one game of Civ (the original) where the French captured a pitiful new city of mine... next turn I get a message that the French have built the Pyramids there. LOL... yeah, GalCiv cheats just like that.

I can honestly say I've yet to see a powerful Drengin empire in any of my games... contrary to many posts I've seen here. Thus far I'd rank the major races in my games like this: #1 - Torians - These guys have always gotten large empires and been a real threat, especially culturally. #2 and #3 (tie) Yor and Altarians - These guys have been the militant races in my games, with really big and powerful fleets. #4 Drengin - They seem to do OK for awhile, but peter out som

Did you register your player with the Metaverse? It's a seperate step from registering the game and/or the forum. Go to the main metaverse page... near the top is a link that says "Register your player..." Give it a name and your CD key and try submitting your score again. Might not work though... others have had problems with this. If you're on a dial-up internet account make sure you're connected before you try to submit as the game won't prompt you to connect.

Oh... why not add in picks for best technology? One immediately popped into my head... - Space Militarization... a prereq for the whole Battleship/Dreadnaught/etc. unit structure, plus it gives you access to Battle Stations I-III... a total of +6 in attack from one tech! It doesn't even appear very far down the tech tree and isn't horribly expensive to research.

Corvettes can be useful on smaller maps where early combat is more likely to happen... thus Photons might be worth researching. I agree it's up there though. On medium+ maps I've often ignored that branch. Silly thing is though the AI still values that tech pretty high since it's a military unit prereq and will demand all sorts of things for Corvette Technology, even late game. I've got 2 picks: - Starhawk Technology... is a dead-end tech that only gives you access to expensive (to

I voted against it, given the choice presented in the poll. I'm concerned because at higher level games, playing as a research-oriented race I've found the AI is often very adept at research and even with my advantages usually can get their first. I can only imagine the AI would win this way a lot. Strictly speaking I'd like to see something inbetween. I'd convert the tech victory into something ala SMAC... researching Final Frontier allows construction of some super-duper expensive social p

I usually wind up in the 40-60 range, often intending to go one path but getting all wishy-washy about some of the choices. I usually shoot for good but as noted it's pretty tough. I do know for certain that I don't like evil for 2 reasons: - Sounds silly, but the music. Very repetitive and not as nice to listen to as the neutral/good music. - Fundamentalists have popped up in most of my games and gutted the Evil races. I don't want to join them.

Just curious... the bug reporting thread is so bloated it's not an easy read. A list would be pretty nice if you think you could post one! Oh... and might this be on the list (don't know if it's a bug or a gameplay issue): - I invade a planet while choosing to use one of the planet-altering tactics (say, Mass Drivers). If the invasion doesn't work, there's no affect to the planet... it only happens if the invasion is successful. I had this monster of a system to invade (3 25

I often wind up with 1 or more orbiting most of planets throughout the game. Even late game they make great defensive fodder with planet bonuses, tech upgrades, etc. But they're so godawful slow and short ranged early on... on anything but smaller maps I don't think they're good for going on the offense.

The original MoO had planets of various environments you couldn't colonize without certain tech, not MoO2. In MoO2 there were various penalties for colonizing "hostile" planets like radiated or toxic but you could do so right off the bat if you wanted to. One of a few things about MoO2 that I didn't care for at all. Really screwed the Silicoids as that was their biggest advantage in the original MoO. Don't know how many times they were spread all over the place, grabbing planets the other ra

I was thinking of shooting for a tech victory for my next game and was curious what was required to win. In looking at the tech tree I see you can actually skip quite a lot of techs (not that that's possibly a good thing) if you shoot straight for Final Frontier... like ALL practically the entire defense and industrial branches, and most weapons too. Or do you need to research the whole durn tree to win (minus the good/evil stuff)?
