It may just be me but the way that the game economy works now, trade income is fine to maximize income but it's diplomatic value is probably greater than the money you make. I have never had a game in the latest releases where trade income was critical to my financial health. I am usually making so much money by midgame I am scarcely motivated to build economy starbases at all. Now, the econ mines are another story.

Be sure you research planetary improvement and xeno econ early. Tthose tech usually turn the corner for me. You can also slow down on some improvements until your population is higher. The market centers are good but they are not that effective until population has grown. You are right to go for population growth but you can get there with less than 100% moral and it is not good to get too far into the red. It's a trade off and you have to find the right balance.

A feature is something you hold up and say this has value use it. This is obvioulsy not a feature but if it causes no benefit or harm to either side it is more a time waster than a bug. It should be corrected. This is not going to be pretty I haven't studied this glitch but based on other comments I assume that the Altarians will lose a tu

Right. As soon as the turn button becomes visible again it it your turn again. In the early game it is almost instantaneous. You can take as much time per turn as you need. I don't time myself but I am sure that some of my moves take a half hour or more and some take seconds.

It all depends on how much moral bonus you have. With max elective moral bonus and political party moral bonus, you could probably get by with 4 VR centers and maybe only three if you build all the moral specials and grab a few mining resources. With none of the above there's no telling it could take7-8 or more.

Damn Vulcan, I would have bet that I was the oldest but you have me by a comfortable margin. Hope I can still play when I am 75.

Amazing!! They will sell all their ships but they won't sell a resource mine for 100,000bc and a half dozen high pq planets. Go figure. I think that unless the code is set to zero (mining starbases) the AI puts too much value on cash since they seem to rush buy almost everything. The price for rush buying anything but basic improvements should be raised and there should be some bonuses to decrease the cost of upgrading ships. I'm really getting into this change thing <im

The AI surrenders are hard to figure. In a weekend game, the Drath and the Iconians surrendered to civs that were kicking their ass while the Korx surrendered to the goodie two shoes Iconians while I was kicking Korx's ass. It was all going to boil down to the two strongest, the Drengi and me and I had a small power lead. It would have been logical for the 2 neutral civs to merge with me and the Korx to merge with the Drengi. This would have created a fairly balanced game.

They don't always warn you. The Torians surprise attacked me in a recent game but that was the first time it has happened. They also went to war with me straight from Cool with no movement to wary and hostile. In another game the Korx were hostile for over a year before they declared war.

I have thought of that and I decided that in effect the bonus food tiles serve that purpose. All of the binus squares have a downside in cost or moral in the case of food. A econ bonus tile might be "way too powerful".

Amazing thread. I don't doubt the points that P10 has stressed (0 attack 0 defense, AI will not attack, etc. ) but I can say that I have not seen this in the 30-40 games I have played. I have seen the AI build zero attack and 2-3 defense ships in some of the versions that have been released but I haven't seen that recently. In my games I try to avoid being attacked by the AI and I have not found that to be very easy when playing a full array of AI. All it takes to get the AI agressive

I hope that some consideration will be given to add some starbase management tools. Many have been mentioned. I am of course speaking of some kind of auto upgrade option or an icon that tells you a starbase has improvements available. Thanks for the efforts so far.

I am no expert at figuring this stuff out but it seems that the game is not finding your ship files. Are the files in C:\Documents and Settings\Scot & Dustin\My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\ships\*.shipclass as they are supposed to be ?

you'd never sell it, if you were really in charge of a civ Well Josh, in this case I was giving them all my planets so the base would have reverted to them on the next turn. If I was running that civ I would sell even they were not giving them all to me. I'm talking 14-15 High PQ planets here. What one mining resource is more valuab

Does the number and strength of military vessels you have play a part in the scoring ? It might play a very small part but I believe most of the military score is based on victories, defeats, power ratings rather than size of your navy.

Just for the heck of it I tried to buy a resource mine from the Torians. I offerred them a lot of money and they rightfully refused. Several turns later I decided I would just see what it would take, in keeping with the old adage that everyone has their price. I offered the Torians all my planets and they still wouldn't trade. I had a warm relationship with them and I had the most powerful civ and the most planets. I agree that the AI shouldn't part with resources easily bu

Actually Alex, It could be a bogus event. I have gotten it and then found that no decent techs show up in the list. It also sometimes occurs related to a minor I have not met and may never meet. So, either the race they stole the tech from didn't have anything I didn't already have (the most likely answer ) or it is just in the game for flavor.

Figuring out whether it is better or not is hard and somewhat subjective. There are no TBS games where the AI is all that smart. In my all time favorite SMAC, the AI did a horrible job of colony development and force deployment. It built bad units and depended on rush tactics to win. I suspect that AI cheats were built in to keep the game competitive. That is the common way to keep the AI competitive in TBS games. IN GC2 the AI plays on a level field up to tough but it stil

From what I have read there is also not a lot of difference in points from easy levels vs tough and above. I look at the Metaverse as a way to keep track of my games. I would be just as satisfied if it kept the scores on my computer like Alpha Centauri. It has little validity in showing who is the best player. Some of the high scorers are real gurus and some are exploiters and cheese players.
