Faster engines are a waste except as you say to establish the route quicker. It is never that critical for me to add the cost of engines. Before I learned that all established routes are at the same speed, I was building all kinds of lightning fast freighters thinking they would increase my trade income

But doesn't armor only protect against Mass Driver weapons? I think all defenses protect with the square root of the total defense when facing a non-specific weapon. Consequently all 1 defenses are equal against all weapons.
On the first issue, the enemy always takes out the weakest link (in this case the starbase). Your best chance of protecting a starbase with a fleet is to set the fleet to auto-attack and even that is not a sure thing if they get there with a move left. You would need to surround the base with protection if you are going to leave it unwatched. On the second issue: For the defensive assists to work you must have your ships equipped with at least 1 point of defense. Stick one piece of ar
Well, I am finding that what their defenses are is not that important if you shoot first and have more points of fire power than they have of firepower and defense. If you don't have the numbers you better go back to the drawing board. In 1.1 the AI is really piling on the defense but I was slaughtering the YOR with 65-70 attack laser fleets with no defense against their fleets of 35-40 missiles with 15-20 shields. It is just a numbers game with the first shot carrying the day. Give m
I would like to see the resource "jewels" replaced by mining colonies built on uninhabitable planets, gas giants, asteroids and moons. Usable sites would be very rare, say 2-5% of the zero rated planets along with moons and asteroids that would need to be added to the game. The resources could be exactly the same as what the jewels provide and some possible new resources. You would need to send a survey ship to any potential site to verify that it had minable resources They would be o
IMO it is the larger hulls that are outclassed. I would like to see weapons reach a level that would require a larger hull. As it is, when you have all the minaturization you don't really need the large and huge hulls. In all my games I have only built large or huge ships a couple of times and that was just for fun, not because I needed them. It makes some sense that mega weapons like doom rays and black hole erupters would only fit on a mega hull.
I cane my kids if they lose their stuff
In a world where many people can't sit still for a 2 hour movie and constantly channel surf radio and tv, it is easy to imagine someone getting bored with the micro-management. It sometimes gets a bit tedious for me as well. The alternative is AI building choices and that is unacceptable. As the outcome of a game becomes apparent, I leave some planets undeveloped or underdeveloped. As in real life, they are the low priority backwater worlds of the empire.
I have seen that happen when a minor race shows up but not otherwise.
Heavy fighter is just a name that the AI likes to use for various small hull ships. They might be almost any ship with more than a 1/0 power rating. Click on the "heavy fighter" see what its got and build a ship to counter it. If you are building defenders you are on the right track. Just research up the weapons tree (lasers, missiles, guns) and you will soon be able to build a ship that can stand up to them.
There has never been a thread so FOS
The only thing that bothers me about this glitch (glitch=less than bug) is the lack of acknowledgement by the devs. If someone from stardock would just say yes it is there and it may or may not be fixed, that would satisfy me and I would proceed to get a life and forget it.
You can solve this in several ways. You can choose politics that give you a moral bonus (Populist), pick the Moral elective "Naturally Joyous" , mine Moral resources and of course resarch up the moral tech tree. VR centers should end any moral problems if you have any of the other three bonuses. I don't like being bothered with moral problems so I usually play with the political and the elective bonus. With this combination I am usually near 100% moral forever after I get Multi-media
Hmmmm. I don't have any components with orange lighting. Wonder if I am missing some stuff?
When it goes to the queue it still shows never or sometimes just an incorrect time (ie 100 turns). The only way to get it correct is to switch in and out of the planet screen or change emphasis. I have decided that it cannot or will not be corrected so I ignore it but it is a glitch
Are you setting your game resolution to match your monitor settings. That caused me a problem early on but once I matched them I have had no problems with crashes on full screen or in a window
Yeah, I think one game does not tell the tale on the AI weapons preferences. I agree on the colonization proclivity of the Arceans and the Torian but thank goodness the rest are different. In the late versions of GC1 all the AI races colonized so fast at higher difficulty I was constantly overwhelmed (not sure if they were cheating). I am glad this game is different and I can deal with a couple of races being more competitive in the planet grab.
Well, it is now necessary to load up fewer colonists. (but not as low as 50) The new release is dramaticall diffrenebt fro the original in that population is now a major factor. Where you used to be able to win with lots of 5 population planets you now need to build up huge populations to get your economy working well. The upside is that the lower population is somewhat easier to control and if you can weather the deficits it all turns out about the same. The colony rush is
Good advice above. More specifically, my way is: Set initial tax rate at 51% and military to 10 60% with research at 20 and social at 20. Buy a factory and entertainment on your home planet and start building colony ships. You should be able to build one in 5 turns. Load 100,000 on colony ships to keep your home planet popolation from crashing and get your 10 planets (all 10pq or better). Start early building constructors on at least half your planets to assure you get your
yep, good looking ship. I like the orange color of the light sources. How is this changed? I haven't seen this color in any of the components. I am not an artsy craftsy type myself but as in all thing in life symmetry is everything.
I notice that your computer screen resolution is 1024x768 and you have the game set to 1600x1024. Try resetting the game resolution to match your 1024x768 and if that doesn't work try setting the game to run in a window (deselect full screen option) and keep the resolution on 1024x768
I haven't seen that at the higher difficulties (and painful is certainly a higher difficulty) They usually develop their planets very well until they start getting pushed by influence and start building influence over production. How do their core planets look? They may attend to them somewhat better.
I think what he is saying is.... "Challenging" is now easier than the old "Normal." I think he may be right and based on some dev comments, that may be at least partly intentional
Things change at the tough level. In the latest beta the AI is no push-over for me on tough. I can win on the smaller maps but I am playing a gigantic map and the outcome is very much in doubt. I started a gigantic game on Challenging just to check out the difference and there is a huge difference apparent, at least this one game. The AI is a different animal at the higher level. Map size also makes a big difference. On a small ma
