I've been trying to play "Challenging" games with the intelligence of all other races set to Bright, but I always seem to wind up in the same situation - after the race for systems, the 2 biggest, best races declare war on me and reduce me to rubble with their Battle Cruisers, then Battleships when all I have are Axes and Frigates. Any suggestions? Any hope at this point?

I love this game! And mostly because it comes closest to any other (next closest is MOO2) to being able to recreate the S:AAB universe. I love recreating the S:AAB cartography (Wolf 359, Groombridge 34, Demios, Ixion, Tellus, Vesta colonies), which in itself was great, because it was mostly technically accurate with the real universe. I also love the ability to name my ships - SCVN Saratoga, Kennedy, Michigan, Tecumseh etc... I also call my starfighters - the 127 Airwing "Angry Angels",
What is a flagship? Is it your first survey ship? Do you recommend using the first survey ship as a "stud" warship by having it pick up lots of combat enhancing anomalies? Is it better to create lots of survey ships and beef up their attack abilities or to just produce regular warships (i.e., Corvette, BattleAxe)? GIG
Does that set my intelligence to Genius as well? Or, will I now be at a great disadvantage technology-wise?
Can I build a starbase at the limited of my ships and extend their range? If so, by how much? If not, how can I extend the range of my ships - for example to colonize that 20 class planet just out of reach of my colony ships?
