Some may consider this somewhere between cheddar and brie (both cheese), but early on when transports have very few movement points there's a way to squeeze 1 to 2 more parsecs out of a transport in certain situations. Assuming the transport has a speed of 1/turn, its possible to dock with a system when 1 tile away from it. Its also possible to relaunch that same transport on the same turn, and it will have 1 movement point left. If you have closely spaced systems, this orbit

You can sort of avoid the terror star speed limit by building them in enemy space (fleeting 5 constructors and parking them in a system rich area ripe for anihillation). I don't like the fact that terror stars can't attack capital ships in open space.

I finally cracked 3500, but just barely. I played on abundant like you guys suggested, but boy was it ever tedious. I spent a long time at the end of the game waiting and waiting and waiting for my population numbers to get big enough to load onto transports and steamroll the torians. The torians had many PQ 25+ planets, along with aphrodisiac ... I finally got frustrated, gave up on traditional warfare and saved up for some mass drivers. [Message Edited]

With the research time for battleships and dreadnaughts being apparently lengthened in 1.04, I find it very difficult to survive without building a massive fleet of corvettes early on. I agree on skipping the battle cruisers. For 50 more credits, you can build a frigate with twice as many hitpoins. One ship I really find useful since in 1.04 is the battlehammer. Its a great defensive vessel to put on starbases or in system orbits.

The enemy AIs are not privvy to what techs you trade with other AIs, so they shouldn't get mad if you trade something to one of their enemies. I often trade techs/ships/trade goods to AIs that are loosing a war against a dominant foe that I'm also worried about, and I haven't seen my relations affected as a result of those trades.

Does alignment affect your score? I've been hacking away at masochistic on tiny maps with uncommon planets for the past couple of days, and haven't been able to crack 3500.

I noticed this too, I can't even get 10 credits for most techs from the incredible AIs. I do what LDiCesare mentioned: research the techs that the AI doesn't go for immediately (Interstellar Refining, Battle Armor, Reinforced Hulls, Defensive Phasers, and all the Repair stuff) ... then I hoard them until I notice one of the AIs has researched it, and then try to trade it off to all the others for something good ... sometimes if I'm lucky (and I have been in the past couple of games), o
Can you distinguish between red and green better? I could modify the font file for you so that it uses the red font instead of the yellow one.
Using a dark red font would help on the diplomacy screen. Is there any way to change the race colors on the map and the graphs?

I'm also color blind, and I can sympathize with you. I don't have that much trouble with the trade offer text changing (I find the "green" is quite a bit darker then the "yellow), but I often get the Arceans and the Torians confused on all the graphs and on the galaxy map. I'd like to know how to assign colors to the different races, or maybe someone could come up with a color blind patch (I recall there was one for Civilizations 3, so its not something unheard of).

Auto sentry and auto guard keep your ships inactive unless another ship (sentry mode) or enemy ship (guard mode) comes into their sector/sensor range. Sector sweep makes your ship do laps around the borders of a sector. Auto attack is similar to guard, with your ship attacking enemies when it spots them. I guess you can use the above to acomplish what you want ... put ships along your trade routes, and set them to auto attack. You will probably have to manually reposi

I agree with both of you (Code Monkey and RayChua), the AIs would value certain techs unevenly before 1.04 ... BUT, never like this (Defense Theory etc.). I recall all the ship technology techs were especially valued (Corvette, Battleship, Interstellar Tactics, etc.) ... but that is inconsistent with 1.04 since they won't trade Defensive Theory when I offer Corvette Technology (something they would jump on immediately in the past).

This is definitely not a show-stopper, but since I upgraded to 1.04, I haven't been able to overrite my savegames. Every time I try, it asks me if I want to overrite the game I click on, but the game gets saved under the generic "New Save Game" title instead.

I'm playing a tiny map on Crippling with 1.04, and I noticed the alien AI is really pigheaded about trading certain techs ... REALLY PIGHEADED. Stuff like Industrial Theory, and Defense Theory for example. I tried trading the Alterians (who are hopelessly behind in research) Corvette Technology (something the older AI would covet and hoard very much) for their Defense Theory - no go ... I threw in the Impulse Drive - still no go. Industrial Theory is similar, along with a few

When you set the autopilot do the ships in question have any moves left? If they do, then they'll move immediately. If they don't then they will move at the end of your next turn. Are you moving fleets or singel ships? Remember fleets move at the speed of the slowest ships. Also if you just made a fleet, and one of the ships in it has no moves left, the whole fleet won't move even if every other ship in it has 7/7 moves left. Are your ships moving through en

I think the random events are great ... they'll make you think twice about voting on things in the UP. I like to vote the space monster park into an ai civ if its early in the game. When the monsters get loose, they generally cause a lot of havoc which is a great distraction for starting wars. I agree, new units would surely be really neat, and probably quite useful ... however adding them will undoubtedly undermine the enemy AI, unless they get a considerable update as well. I think the original idea behind the metaverse (ai getting beefed up using winning human strategies) could even the playing field between humans and ai ... I don't see it coming to fruition in the near future though.

if you bought the game by itself, then you don't have a Drengin.net account, and can't download the 1.04 beta yet. the 1.04 update for those who don't have a Drengin.net account will be available next week, or so I've been told.

Once researched, AM missiles seem to be the final solution to all my military problems. They're powerful enough (100 base attack, though I've had it upwards of 300 with some military resources) to take out any ship, and the enemy AI has no clue how to counter them. You'd think the AI would build a large number of small, quick ships (corvettes or starfighters) to shoot down incoming missiles, but no ... they always put their eggs in one basket to build a Dreadnaught/Ranger/Avatar/Overlord which
