I think your observations are pretty accurate. I can't figure out the Alterians at all. They just attack for no reason and often when they're in a poor position vis a vis military tech. The minors always stay loyal but they never last through the end of the game. I've found the Drengins to often be the most reciprocal in terms of trade; I always get more than I give with them.

thanks to all who replied. Many good ideas, certainly some of them I hadn't considered. I suspect that trade routes were the culprit. I also hadn't tipped to the idea of making an AI civ pay me to leave them alone. Oh, that's a good follow up question, in the negotiation screen when you are offering an agreeable deal, the words turn green, but before you offer up your techs, money, etc. the words are blue and there's usually something along the lines of "hey slave race we want cloaking or we'll

I had set up a game as federalists with a +30 bonus on economics, +5 to PQ, etc. It worked pretty well. Next game I decided I wanted to focus on research so I shifted my attribute points to max out research. Everything was fine until the Altairans declared war on me. I shifted spending to military and cranked out a bunch of battlehammers and dreadnoughts. Pummeled the Altairans and stopped building ships. Then I began to lose money, so I cut spending and decomissioned some ships. Still losing mo

I'm sorry, the first four posts here seem to be Alexander talking to himself. Was there an answer to this problem? I've tried to register, put in the code it says you've registered but when I do a search I don't see any scores for myself. At no point was I prompted to input a score, does the program do that automatically? Very confused.

I didn't know you could build a base anywhere! That will help immensely. Thanks! Btw, I had researched both controlled gravity and gravity mastering. Yet this upper left corner was still out of range for a colony ship. I dunno, it's only my 6th game, so obviously there's still a great deal to discover. thanks again

Here's the situation: I've found one of the best systems in a medium sized galaxy w/habitable planets set on rare. No one else has seen it yet. The problem is my colony ship's range. There are no untapped anomalies nearby to build a starbase on. It's in the corner of the map and the closest unowned planets still don't allow support for my ship to get close. As far as I can tell I've maxed out the research options that extend range. Any thoughts?

I was playing this morning and decided to use only tidal disruption for invasions. Out of three systems I lost 6 improvements total. Not bad, I'm thinking this may be my new tactic of choice. I also like the advantage bonus/PQ aspect of tidal disruption.

Man, I've never had ANY of that happen. Of course I'm only on my 4th game so I really can't complain. I'm anxious to run into a monster though, what's the tech path to stellar zoo?

thanks, I'll give those a try. Another question though, if you invade a system that was previously yours, don't you have to kill everyone to take over the planet? So is there a morale issue or an issue of making yourself evil in the process?

is there a way to ask the AI diplomat for a tech without it being an ultimatum. When I contact an alien civ and pick a tech of theirs that I would like, the dialogue screen says "Although you could crush me like a bug I must insist on having this tech." Why can't you simply ask "how much?"

Am I reading my display right? When I run over a piece of space junk and get a bonus to my ship i.e. +1 to weapons, +4 to hit points, those are being applied to my survey ship? Because at the moment I've got a survey ship with 71 hit points an attack of 7 and a defense of 15! Now I've just started playing but it seems like this ship would be one bad mother in a battle, I mean aren't we talking battlecruiser stats at that point? Or am I missing something?

Your toenail clippings will also rise and fall in a glass of beer. I don't know why, and I really don't want to explain why I know it works...I was drunk, 'nuff said. btw 1. Blackened Voodoo (new orleans beer) 2. Negra Modelo 3. Rolling Rock 4. Little Kings (I'm a sucker for the frat classics) 5. Miller Lite ('cause sometimes cheap is good)

I agree with Matthew. In the very limited time I've been playing, I've had great success with core detonations, rarely losing a battle. The PQ does drop some, but often it's fixable damage with soil enhancement and habitat watchamacallit. The tidal flooding is pretty cool as well but your advantage isn't as great.

Playing my second complete game (I've decided to be evil in this particular game) and during a big research push towards dreadnought tech (sliders: mil 0% soc 0% research 100%)I experienced a loss of two major star systems to rebellion. They both joined the Altairans. How do you prevent this from happening? Can I do anything to get them to switch back or do I have to go and kill everyone and re-populate with combat troops? Thanks in advance.
