Didn't read all the threads, but if you want to enlarge the area allowed for each icon you care to display on your desktop, Simply go to Display Properties, hit the Appearence (sp)tab and hit the Advanced button. You'll then be greeted with another dialogue bos about the same size Of the Display property box. Open the item: slot and navigate to the Icon
