After switching to the "opt-in" version of Star Control, and updating to the latest nVidia driver, I haven't had any problems since. *knocks on wood*

Latest nVidia drivers seem to have helped me somewhat, i'm crashing much less frequently.... I'm suspect of user "chocolate_mooses"'s fix in my case.... I don't have this problem in any other games, nothing is overheating. I'll try to play more tonight and report back an actual real number of times I crash.

I am having the same issues and agree it seems to happen on planets with trees/vegetation
