Hail to the Untamed Marsupial! This time I got it right! In my second attempt at a pure-influence win I had an excellent starting position (which would have been ideal for the One-Sector Challenge too). There were two systems and four planets in my starting sector, and that's all I had until the culture tide began to flow. My sector was in the middle of the west border of the map. The Drengin were right next door with four systems and five or six planets, with the Altarian superpower
Hermann - mate, I'm feeling responsible!
Ah, the horror! To be responsible for the extermination of the human race! ;) Anyway, I am in the process of trying again. Thanks to all for the suggestions and encouragement. It's quite possible that my situation was simply a runaway Drengin superpower. Vincible will be able to tell us (and this constitutes a bump). -- HtL

Hi, Sirian. Well, as an "old-hand" at OCC in Civ2, I decided to try your OSC. Just started yesterday so I have very little to report. Same party, but I fiddled with the bonuses a bit. I was tempted to take my usual +5 PQ, but that would be a real one-shot bonus in this game. It seems to me that even the +Production boni will be less valuable when there's only one or two planets...but then again, having +Production on my ONLY production makes sense! So IIRC I took +2 Trade Routes, +1

Hmm...I suppose it would be possible to englobe an anomaly to save it for later while protecting it from non-enemy aliens, just like protecting a minor. [Of course when war breaks out my cheap guards usually get shot up, but that's not likely to be done by an alien survey ship...and I usually have *something* with teeth as one of the guards (a single battle cruiser, for example). [Oops. "Englobe?" I was arguing *against* 3-D, for playability reasons. ;p ] -- HtL
I'd say that following a rigid plan probably dooms you in some situations where the map just doesn't favor you.
Indeed it would! I treat any strat recommendations as guidelines or templates on which to improvise to meet conditions. This is not like the dreaded "build orders" of games like Age of Empires. I don't think this was a "doomed from the start" position; I think I screwed up along the way, probably wasting too much time and resources on distractions, meaning thin

Um...can someone confirm or deny this? My impression is that you get a 25% credit toward the current tech even if you have not yet made progress. It wouldn't be that useful a bonus if it works as Aaberg thinks. As for Peter's question about the most time-intensive tech, that's theoretically true, but if it's the equivalent of evolution control, you may have much higher priorites. Also, can someone confirm that if you switch techs in mid-stream, you retain your previous progress
Since the number of starbases is now causing problems, it cannot be exploited that much, but still exits.
Well, you can still squeeze 8 or 9 SB in one sector, then put another batch in an adjacent sector to create a directional slingshot. I've often considered creating a string of speed SBs to create an "expressway" (for a planned invasion route or for the "empty" sectors of a major trade route). I've never bothered as by the time I can afford that many starbases, the gam
Can I complain that the Galaxy is also square and not circular at this point?
KtK: You can complain, but think of the wasted screen space if there was nothing "in the corners." I agree that while 3D would be more realistic it would be much less playable, and the interface would inevitably be awkward. [I'd use the scroll wheel for the Z axis with an alternate like shift for those without scroll wheels...but then you'd have to use something else to zoom.] <br

MARSUPIAL MENTEE MANGLED As the last Terran was dragged to the Death Furnace he screamed something incomprehensible: “Where did Wombatism go Wrong?” The screams cut off abruptly, and the Lombard League was no more than a grease spot on the floor of galactic history. I didn’t pull that one out. I was able to propitiate the aliens for a while, but fell victim to the dreaded Runaway Drengin Superpower. I followed the plan Wombat Plan through Cultural Maximizing and on through N
Anomalies do re-spawn in the late game, but they are much less common.
Thanks, CB. I thought I had it happen in one game, but never saw it again, so I thought I had missed something during my early searching.

Having finished my vacation at "Painful" and slumming at "Beginner" (wrapping up my 1.10 games), I've upgraded to 1.12 and I'm back to "Maso" where I belong (some would say in real life). My first Maso win was along the lines described by Ray with Tiny/Rare and a frigate rush. This time I thought I'd try...
How to be a Wombat of Influence
I thought I was doing pretty good. Had six good planets in only 3 systems, with a couple of PQ13s waiting for terraforming.

I have occasionally parked a survey ship next to a potential research anomaly while finishing a cheap tech in order to try for +25% on an expensive tech. Then I may select the expensive tech instead of the cheaper tech I had expected to go for, pop the anomaly, and if I get the bonus I'll continue the tech. I'm also watching like a (star?)hawk for alien survey ships. Speaking of starhawks, by the time I have the tech, there are no anomalies left (much less for rangers!) I think it w
Actually, for the science slider, the key thing would be knowing how it affects the "months left to research" without having to constantly go back to the research screen. It would be nice to see on the economics screen a little field under the science slider that said "1 month remaining" and then, click click click, it shows "next month".
That's probably my #1 interface issue. Perhaps even put a small tech progress bar (months-to-go would be better) on the frame of the mai
I can see what sort of trade of going on with the majors but I can't see what trade is going on with the minors, can I?
You have to do it the old-fashioned way: scouting. Send your scouts over and look for the trade ships, or set up a screen of sensor drones.
The fact is that any truly Saintly(Good)Aligned Race would never spy on their neighbours, or spend credits trying to covertly subvert the oppositions citizens.
I disagree. That's like U.S. Secretary of State Henry Stimson, in 1929, shutting down the so-called American Black Chamber because "gentlemen do not read the mail of other gentlemen." Those other gentlemen were reading *his* mail, of course! Espionage to undermine Evil would seem to be a legitimate tool of

Well done, Sirian. While I'm at it, thank you for your very thoughtful and instructive posts in many threads! (I remember being quite proud of my first OCC in Civ2. I never pulled it off at Size One, but I did pull it off at Size Four.) [Message Edited]

eradicus: Thanks, I had done so (though I don't remember one about fixing games; her system is XP Home, if that matters). CariElf: copying the files to the hard drive and installing from there worked. THANKS. Now I'm wondering *why* it worked, with an eye toward future installation problems of my own software. During the copy-to-disk, I heard the CD drive apparently change speeds several times, which I had never noticed before despite installing several games on her system.
Two Altarian constructors just spontaneously turned into starbases close to one of my planets. No free resources were in sight. I'm guessing a bug here?
Well, more of an "undocumented feature." That's been around for some time, and apparently occurs when the AI is thwarted while trying to grab a resource. "They beat me to the resource? Well, I'm going to build a starbase SOMEWHERE, by God!"

...and now I'll *really* get kicked around after slumming at Beginner. I went back to that EBZ strat message and decided to try it out, more or less as mind candy (compared to maso). Of course I had to fool around with his recipe (as any self-respecting cook would do), so I took less speed and +1 PQ, and never disbanded my starting scout, and I think I avoided selling diplo techs (making my advantage even more lopsided). I don't think I ever had a tech sale for more than 100x50 (well,
