Two words: Britney Spears Two more words: anal bleaching (yes, it's real, look it up, I just did yesterday) More seriously, Mumble's #54 post aims what I was thinking about with the subtitle for the thread. But I'm a bit of a scholar and I've quite enjoyed seeing people wrangle about the history a bit. Those who do not learn history... w

This 3.5 million mile difference is a minor effect but not totally inconsequential, particularly since the energy output from the sun received by the Earth is inversely proportional to the cube of the distance. What is inconsequential is what this has to do with the topic. Mumble, should we digress to another thread? Your remarks here make me won

Um, well, I have to admit to being a very demanding reader and, um, this thread is, well, frakkin' rewardin' I'm especially glad to see both awareness that the real Nazis targeted more than Jews for mass murder and an awareness that US English is the imperial language du jour . (Apologies if I sound like your civics teacher, but I was one)

I'm several days behind in updating for Beta 2A, and my current Huge game has just yielded my first encounter with the new unit distibutions when an AI surrenders. I have a screen cap that seems very odd to me and a question about whether the Stardock devs need input from "late" people like me or if they might be better off not getting caps, comments, SmartException zips, etc. from folks who are not able or willing to update within X days of the latest public build. I have a s

2nd Dystopic's (demanding?) suggestion that 1 or 2 "extra" super abilities would be swell for custom races. And I like all the suggested new abilities, at least in brainstorming mode. "Demanding" probably didn't need the question mark

It's not like the game follows exactly the storyline That's part of why I said "story parts" and not "storyline." What I mean is that randomized Super Abilities would lead to some seriousl "out of character" AI players, e.g. Drengin Super Diplomats. <TABLE cellpadding=8 width="95%" align=center bgColor=#FFF394 class="mb-Body-Quote-Table"

Mistralok, do you have any sympathy for the idea that "cheese" is at least sometimes in the nose of the smeller? To me, the military victory is closest to what I'd call "cheese" (although I don't actually like that term). That's because I *think* I understand what's necessary to dominate the AIs by force, perhaps even if I finally break down and start playing above Tough. I find destroying all other fleets and taking all other planets, well, kind of boring. I admit I've had so

I guess my point is that I'd rather see good nannies than dedicated "nazis." Mary Poppins surely understood that the children just wanted to be understood, and sometimes that means telling them how to spell "understood." But it *doesn't* mean spending hundreds of words excoriating them for typing "undrstood" in a casual forum. Is that too backwards a way of asking the grammar nazi crowd to mellow out but not quit asking when they can't understand a post? If you ask nicely, it shouldn't

Where is the logic I certainly appreciate the core scoff here, but assuming you are trying to bring in formal logic, " the logic" doesn't really apply b/c this is a game. In the informal sense, "logic" basically means "whatever passes for the local rules," and for GCII the 20k cap is part of a pattern of design elements that appea

But suddenly my coder-groupy self wonders just how much XML has to do with the guts of us seeing a particular chunk of flavor text. If someone who's skills were mostly just English wanted to help "fix" something like this, could we get by if we're only able to handle a crude tagging scheme like baby HTML or that old-school stuff IBM used to support on VM mainframes?

Faugh, this is a clear example of when flavor text should yield to clear UI about the underlying mechanics! I'm all for feisty comments from Snarky of the Snathi, but my limited understanding of XML leads me to believe errors like "only at 215" when you are *only* at 205 are not necessary. Can't the code do a greater-or-less-than comparison and route to appropriate flavor text?

I'm the first to admit that the "version number boundary" thing is very debatable, but there's no doubt that GCII DL is at least as much an improvement from DA as, say, Windows 98 was from Windows 95 (no insult to GC intended!). Re the bucks spent, I'd say save your money until your enthusiasm peaks or your familiarity begins to breed contempt. Either way, the DA expansion should satisfy anyone who's thoroughly enjoyed the core GCII DL game.

Sci-Fi need not apply. testicle-impaired folks. huh? My point exactly. Some of my favorite SF authors, e.g. Octavia Butler and Ursula K. Leguin, are women. At least some women must be playing these games. Why must we "suffer" the overwhelming eau d'testosterone ?

I must admit that a fair share of my reason for this post was my interest in the thread(s) related to Wheel's assertion that "grammar fraktards should die." This is related to my deep gratitude to BSG(2) for the fact that we can, at least briefly, say "frak you" in public without fear of traditional authoritarians. But I also have much sympathty for ESL folks like PB OMowe, not least b/c in my paid work I sometimes need to do my best to edit IT marketing-babble in hopes that translators

The gay dudes are great for finding good women. True, but that still leaves 2 problems for this forum: 1) finding good men for the good women and 2) finding more women who will play these silly mega-boardgames with us testicle-impaired folks.

Swicord's Gay Mafia I so wish I had a gang treating me like Tony Soprano , and it wouldn't be the "Gay Mafia," it would be the Pseudo-FemiNazis. More than a few times lately I've amost started an off-topic thread with the title "The token queer boy wants mo

I'm well into the middle of my first sustained Beta 2 game on a huge map with many (7?) minors alongside 9 AIs (diff=tough). The minors have remained rewardingly important players as of 1 July 2231. In my earlier DA games, I had enough map coverage to see that a few minors had colonies away from their homeworlds. In this game, I can't see more than one world per minor, but some of them are still showing up all across the "most powerful" rankings and they've had a significant effect on c

I don't have math for it, but I know that both my reading and posting on these forums have been on steady upward curves. One of the things that increased my interest in posting was the regular "grammar nazi" talk, and that's in no small part because I'm head of a single income household and I work as an editor and writer on the periphery of IT Land. So, for any of you who have declared or discretely held "grammar nazi" sympathies, please hold forth on your notions of standards, communit

OrdigTroll, where have I missed the 50% thing? When I watched plague effects in my 1A games, it looked very much like *everyone* was zapped except me (I researched the cure in 6 turns, the nearest AI was way slower). Mind you, I really like the notion of pegging the plague event to a player's number of colonies. Regardless of how you want to describe such a "universal" plague, it seems reasonable to pick a trait that determines how badly a given empire suffers rather than make all empir

Shadow565, if it is any consolation, for at least a share of us reading these forums regularly, your question has helped identify the lower boundary of sub-spec graphics cards that can manage an adequate GCII game. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one around here who is grateful that "less old" video cards will do OK, but it never hurts to have details like this on record. The card I use just now (some "old" NVIDIA thing, I forget the exact version even though it was "hot" when I bought

your limit The way Kryo worded his response here makes me believe that the limt is per-player, regardless of whether the player is AI or human. In other words, *you* get only one chance per 8 (9?) weeks to cut a deal with an AI. And each AI has the same limits when they deal with other AIs. At least that's how I'm reading stuff right now
