The main problem with the NHS (UK welfare) is that it has been underfunded during 15 year (Tatcher and Major). NHS is free to everybody, as long as you are in UK. They want now to charge oversea people (everybody excluding EU members). The biggest issue is the waiting list. You have to queue for everything, the more specialised the longer the queue, a lot of tabloid put that problem on the immigration. I have friends coming from the former communist coustries that find that UK system doesn't mat

well brad, I don't see any positive point in having children uncovered by health care. In any health problem, old and young are always the first victims... Why the state? The state is supposed to consider anybody equal, so if you are rich or poor you'll get the access to the same quality of care. The society as a whole wil profit for helping people out of the survival mode.

Brad: I would have though that afghanistan campaign would have send a strong repelient message to any country willing to practice terrorism on US. Subsquently, may be that Saddam would have kept a low profile in order to stay in power. What are your source that most iraq are happy of the occupation?

I don't know steven, I guess that a lot of the 43.6 m americans without healthcare are also in difficulties regarding their votes... I think that a "mommy" state will not let people going down in a vicious circle, it will always happen that some people need to be helped. You can judge a society by the way it treats its weakest members.

Hmm, i guess not. christmas vacation are given by tradition (i suppose). In Italy, the crucifix is in any class room, the growing muslim population feel discriminated and asked that muslim symbol should be in everyroom as well. The governement refused, but the problem is still going on ... Secularity is an important value in a society. There are big talk in France about this law giving some strengh to fundamentalist. I'm not sure if it 's a good way to fight against extremism.

quuestionof mommy of humanity... Letting people dying,(because that what you talking about with health insurance) because you don't want the system to pay for it is inhuman. If you looked inother country, welfare system managed by state are usually cheaper and more efficient that private system. I'm sure that american poors are happy to die in a rich country...

Brad: Your comment about the french ban in state school is a misunderstanding of france culture about religion. The purpose of this law is to suport the secularity of the state, a principle highly valued in french culture. Religious symbol in french school have been banned for almost all the last century with the victim being christian. There has been exactly the same demonstration. France has both the highest muslim population and the highest jew popu

For being honest, I have no idea whatsoevere of why this war happen, I don't buy the WMD threat, I have very serious doubt about the generosity of Bush administration to free Iraq people. I'm not sure that petrol is also the solution, a lot of despot are sitting on country full of fuel and everybody does trade with them. I haven't read anything convincing except may be the will for satisfying their ego and the supremacy of US "imperialism" of washington powermonger. However, Ireally liked th

There could be a lot of problems as Hans point. There's one that I find difficult, how the idea are going to evolved when people can live forever. It will probably lead in lot of conservatism with a lot of old and few young, imagine living in a society that doesn't want to change. It sounds horrible, like Muggaz said carpe diem...
