Try #2: (Sorry if this turns out to be a double-post) Good luck getting a new one. If you go with greywar's suggestion, post pics, ok? -A.

I was JUST THINKING (yes the all caps are justified) about how much I miss Calvin & Hobbes. That's some of the wisest, wittiest stuff I've ever read. Great social commentary, too. -A.

I do this. You call it self-defeating, which is probably more correct than my generic "cynicism" term. But it's a defense mechanism, because I'm usually pleasantly surprised by an outcome after having convinced myself of the worst. Glad the meeting with your adviser went well. -A.

But hopefully they will continue to improve technology to make us less reliant on petroleum products. That's what I hope for, too. I'm not a big fan of said natural resource and sometimes wish I lived in my own little cabin in the backwoods of Montana--preferably near the Bitterroot River--with a wood s

After months of groaning over the gas portion of the Visa bill, H and I headed down to the Toyota dealer and traded in our Honda CRV for a yuppiemobile: A gas-conserving, environmentally-more-friendly used Toyota Prius. And while we've probably been happier--our wedding, say, or the honeymoon--we're pretty damn pleased with our decision and the foreseeable future. How

Er, potential spoiler I discovered on IMDB.com: Look up Lena Olin's "Notable Guest Appearances." There's a sizable clue there. -A[lias junkie].

You do have a point about Arvin and Jack being in cahoots. That's pretty cool and I'm eager to see how it turns out. But overall I'm displeased with the season. Here's what I think we need to get back on track: 1. Sidney needs an outside life, like she had in seasons 1 and 2. Plus it's fodder for killing people off. 2. Sidney needs a love interest besides Vaughn. Or Vaug

BlueDev, I, too, have read the facts about the McDonald's lawsuit. For everyone else who wants to know more, go google and type in "mcdonald's coffee lawsuit" and you'll find about a zillion (ok, 22,900) hits and most of them tell one side or another. There's not one link that's unbiased out of the top 20, so just hit a few. Nutshell: Basically, McD's knew their coffee was about 20 degrees hotter than other establishments, and they'd had custo

Well, we do know what happened, or what likely happened. That's just bordering on the H-doesn't-want-me-to-talk-about-it territory. But Raven, you were right: The position he fell in probably kept him from breathing on his own. So in a sense, that's a good thing, because if it ever happens again and if he just falls flat, he'll probably be ok. Thanks for your kind words, Para and Raven. I'm no angel. I did my share of freaking out when I first

I always wondered what it would be like to save someone's life, and as it happens, Sunday night I got the opportunity to try it out. What it left me with was a week of exhaustion, nightmares, and inlaws (perhaps that was redundant--need I only say inlaws?). I jest, however--H's parents were awesome. But I'm not kidding about the exhaustion and nightmares, and worse, t

So, um, this may be really hypocritical of me, but what good does pointing fingers at the UN or Europe do? If they're not helping, doesn't it make more sense to find some who are? I guess all this talk is at least a level of awareness, so I should shut up. But it bugs me that we armchair QBs sit back and explain what's wrong instead of doing something to make it right. My idealistic $0.02. -A.

stand in water up to her tits without getting her but wet! Unless we're standing on our hands... Er. That probably deserves greywar's *rimshot* rating, if not an all-out *airball.* Sorry. I'll go away now. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/JU/smiles/Tongue.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absm

Look at it this way: It is great that you can read everyone's opinion, and everyone can read yours. The price is that we have to put up with idiocy like the one you describe. For me, it's worth it if I can read something sensible like your text once in a while. True. I should have pointed that out in my

hyper-confident medical student Is it wrong that that statement made me giggle like a schoolgirl? Come on . Why do people always have to assign a judgment instead of just commenting on topic? #500236 had a fairly interesting input after that first bit of idiocy. Grr. Gee, BlueDev, I just don't kn

Yeah. I deleted one yesterday or today by accident. I clicked on it to delete it, then decided it wasn't so bad, hit cancel, and the thing was still gone. Sorry whoever that was--it was on my Sudan article. Gene, I thought Brad said, once upon a time, that Current Events and Politics were syndicated columns. I could be wrong. I don't make much of an effort to visit the other sites affiliated with JU. Thanks for checking that. (Durr...I've bec

Well, that happens here. Everyone has the power to delete the comments made on his/her blog. Some people delete because you disagree with them. They're rare, and you might want to note who they are and not spend a lot of time crafting replies to them. Some people delete replies if they're off topic. I do that. If one of my articles degenerates into partisan bickering, I delete those replies. If it degenerates into a flame war, I delete. Havin

I highly recommend jumping out of a plane. I have a reasonable respect for high places, weak-kneed like the best of 'em, but I actually thought I was going to die until my logic overtook my emotion. Then I could jump. Good experience. -A.
