Question for Technician:

Question for Technician:

Here it is:

"Dude. What is UP, man?!"

I don't begrudge anyone their talents for the game, and in fact am highly admiring of anyone who can put in the time and study to excel at anything in life, but this guy is pumping out two or three gigantic/maso victories PER DAY for the past, what... half year or so? What is UP?

Other questions are:

1. How long does each one generally take?
2. How does it not get boring doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over again? (At least, when you look at the game record, it looks somewhat repetitive... maybe each of the games is a new, exciting adventure, I dunno.)

I'm afraid this message will sound accusatory, trust me that I don't mean it to. I'm just curious how (and why!) he does it.

I mean, even on Large, the only games I've played which took less than three or four hours were ones that I lost quickly (and there were a LOT of them, don't you worry!)

Is this just a ONE-MAN GC WRECKING CREW or what?

(If this has been discussed before, just point the way. I did a search but failed at finding anything.)

Ok, guys this is madness. An anti-Guardians empire? This place is just happy competition, not dragging a bunch of good people through the mud because they have done well.
End of quote

VoT, I do not understand where you get the idea that we are proposing an Anti-Guardians empire. I for one like the guardians. Every person that has contributed to any of the forums has done so with HONOR.

This empire that we are talking about building is to be an empire that contains active players only. Many people here feel that other empires are dying off because there are too many inactive players.

All we are trying to do is revitalize the remaining players by creating a new empire. Will this empire be able to challenge the Guardians ... in all honesty ... probably not their lead is too great.

Of course we will give it a try, the essence of the Metaverse is competition and I would like to think that the guardians would enjoy some friendly competition.

In the past Technician and I have stated that we would not join the Guardians. Our reasons are simple, they are the Number 1 empire by 3 times the closest score. If they were a number 2 empire or even in 20th spot I would join. They have a great comraderie amongst their team mates.

I personally would not join any of the top 4 remaining empires because there is only a few people left in those empires that are playing.

Newfy,
You would make a perfit fit for the Guardians. Of course, that is why you were selected as an Honorary Guardian. If we can't claim you as our own, at least we can extend to you and others the joy of assocciating with us in some way.

cheers

Many empires have tried to have only active players... Tried and Died... I wish you all the best...

BTW The Starfleet empire is active... and there always will be at least 1 active player ... ME ... So If you don't want to be playing alone then join Star Fleet.. at last count we had 3 active players (posted at least 4 games in the month of August) Sure they arn't 60,000 games.. that doesn't matter .. all that matters is that you submit games and join in and have fun..

No i'm not trying to poach players.. just stating another option for players unhappy where they are..

Truth to be told I hope that this new empire does do well as it'll make climbing the ladder easier for Starfleet as there won't be many other active empires in the metaverse.. Sure it'll take time but we'll get there.. theres no rush... LOL

Good thread...

I did not join any empire yet - so I think I'll wait the creation of the new one.

On my wish list there is an Empire that plays plain vanilla GC... no mods allowed.

On the names side, Foundation is currently my favourite, but any classic SF-themed one would be great:

Starship Troopers (Heinlein)
Sixth Column (Heinlein)
Robot Empire (Asimov)
The Ultimate Egoist Empire (Sturgeon)
City Empire (Simak)
Rama (Clarke)
Non-A (damn I forgot the author)
Slan Power (Van Vogt) - I was tempted to write Slan Dunk Project...

etc etc, there are so many more out there!

I play GC AP with no mods... but each to their own.. there is no way to know if someone has used mods unless they tell you

Sixth Column

I like this name. For me I think that this beats the System Lords. Tech, anyone else have an opinion?

markos2, at this time the metaverse has no way of knowing if Mods were used. I personally would like to see a Metaverse that only allowed submissions from games that are not modded.

But, Stardock certifies the good mods and playing with those mods can give an enjoyable and different version of the game. Please try them out. I only started using mods myself after almost a year of playing the game.

One other thing, what book was the Sixth colum refered to?

Ben,
I understand the issue (although it should be easy enough to check whether any modifier has been used checking the saved games).

I guess we can find a way to *encourage* people eventually joining such an empire to stick to some rule... didn't our engineers invent Brainwave Mapping long ago?

The book is "The Sixth Column", by good old Robert Heinlein - one of the greatest SF writers ever. Personally not 100% agreeing with his own view of the world(s), but a must read for any SF fan!

Amazon.com book summary: "Last of the free nations to fall, America had been invaded and conquered. Ironically, even as Washington had been destroyed, a secret laboratory charged with developing weapons to defeat the invaders had discovered a new system of controlling energy and matter. A super-weapon is developed, but who will use it to liberate America?"

I think what we are seeing here is why there are multiple empires in the Metaverse. Everyone wants to join a group of like minded people. Collecting only active players may not be enough of "likemindedness" to provide the glue to hold it together.

Well if you are going to open up a debate on name again,
Foundation may work as name.

If you never heard of the Foundation series this is what I
found with a quick Google search,

Don't tell me you haven't heard of the Foundation series before? No? Well, it's the tale of the fall of the Galactic Empire and the rise of the Foundation. Pretty normal so far, except for the fact that the Foundation's destiny is guided by psychohistory, a scientific method of predicting the future, developed the the Foundation's founder, Hari Seldon. Hari Seldon plots the paths of the Foundation, from its start to, one thousand years later, its leadership of the galaxy.

In 'Foundation', the early golden days of the Foundation are told, of how the society managed to gain survival and ultimately pre-eminence in it's local sector, not through violence, but through cunning.

The reason I said that is that is seems like Downie is trying to bring the Guardians down. Tech, Newfy, I know you guys aren't trying to do that, you just want the top. But some of Matthew's comments bother me. Going back to look at what I said, I see that I could have said it better, but you can't say that some of Matthew's comments aren't distinctly anti-Guardian. I guess that those comments stuck in my mind, and when you guys decided to create an empire together, those surfaced.

Well, I guess I should go on the record here as well. I was taken aback with the comment about how Matthew wanted to destroy the Guardians because the Guardians destroyed FotR. Most of the founding members are no longer here to defend themselves. I know of nobody in the Guardians that ever had any malice toward the FotR. The Guardians have always promoted participation in the Meta across empires, and never wished any empire ill.

I wasn't around when Theoden split from FotR, but from what I have read in the forums, I believe that Theoden left because Ray was MIA and things were starting to drift over there. Others chose to follow or not as suited them. As I said, most of them are no longer around anyway.

As for the new empire, if it is decated to achieving first place, great! We would love to have someone to compete with! Even be rivals with! Please, please, please do it! If however, it is decated to "bringing down the Guardians" because "the Guardians are bad" or some variant, I doubt that you will have a very enjoyable empire, and therefore little success. The Guardians didn't gain their success from a common vendetta, but through enjoyment of a shared community that went beyond cranking games and submitting points.

Well I am glad that is over.

I myself have been on at least 4 empires. Sort of hopping from one to another.

When I left the Anzacs it was because I disagreed with their direction. When I left the CSF it was because I felt like I was the only person playing. I know that there were others but the empire had stagnated too much.

I guess what I am trying to say is empire movement (hopping) will happen. Sometimes for reasons that are understood and sometimes not.

It is never my intention to bring down an empire but to strengthen the empires through competition.

Having a new or existing empire change in a way that it becomes active and hungry is a good thing.

Even if this new empire can't challenge for the top spot I am betting that it will be fun. :)

That's the opposite of what I said. I said I didn't want to destroy the Guardians, even though they effectively destroyed the Fellowship.

A bit of history here: The Fellowship consisted of me, Ricbayer, Theoden, Terl, Greldon, Lothmorg, Weyrleader and others (mostly retired). When Theoden left to found the Guardians, one or two followed him, and it turned into a mass desertion, to the point where people were leaving because there was no-one on our forum to talk to. I made a desperate attempt to keep things together by posting interesting things on the Fellowship forum every day, but to no avail.

It's also worth considering what 'destroying' an empire really means. If I accidentally destroyed the Guardians completely by persuading their entire active membership to join our new empire, what would have been lost? You guys could still do all the things you always did together, only you'd be operating under a new name.

We like our old name. Not sure what new name will be yet anyway, since it doesn't seem like you all are agreed yet. I am sure it will be an good name when finally agreed upon. Until then,

I am sorry if I misinterperted either the words or the tone of your statements. I thought that you had some underlying resentment of Theoden and Co, and felt that since they were not here to defend themselves, that I should do so for them.

Yes, if you read Stranger in a Strange Land carefully, he seems to be arguing in favour of the extermination of all 'inferior' people.

Do you mean Null-A? That was another Van Vogt.
