The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Well I'm not part of the fellowship but you can go ahead and put me in the MMORPG as a human pirate skilled in the darkside of the force or something you can make it something else I don't really care that is just what goes with my empire and name.

Miles, those are some of my favorite books.

Analysis of the latest beta changes posted in the Mods forum. Spoilers abound so don't read if you don't want to know. :)

I used to play AD&D and have played Baldur's Gate so I know about RPG, but what massively multiplayer computer game are you guys talking about? Is Galciv considered MMORPG?

I don't know what to think of you G.R.O.S.S. peeps, but thanks for the welcoming Vincible and Ray. :)

There's sort of an ongoing story in this thread and a few others, which people are referring to as a MMORPG. The Fellowship at war with the evil Undead of the Canadian Star Federation and things like that. If you've played AD&D you'll fit right in.

If you like, you can introduce yourself with some sort of fantasy character and you'll be woven into the story if you like.

Where are my manners? Welcome aboard Miles! We spearheaded our short lived trip to the top of the Meta boards, but the MWC has already retaken the top spot.

Damn corn-fed bully boys... :)

Ray, how do you finish off gigantic/abundant games? Invading all the planets takes so long, as does building enough culture palaces to take everything over.

There are two modes of role-playing in the Fellowship, Miles.

The active mode involves writing up stories like what vincible, Gengsta, Mad Prophet and others have done.

The passive mode involves stating your preferred character on this thread. Some of us would just write you in as we move along. What I usually do as well is to flesh out your characters based on your persona on the forum.

The MMORPG is really our term for the virtual role-playing universe that we have written for ourselves. The Fellowship MMORPG is fantasy based happening on the planet Meta (something alike to Middle Earth). There is another one happening in parallel called the War of the Worlds, which is more space age.

Actually guys, Miles made some good suggestions on improving the empire in another thread. I thought the Jedi Republic website is kinda cool. We could still retain our discussions in this thread yet have a separate website to put up interesting empire stuff.

Maybe one page for Empire philosophy, one as membership register and another for our MMORPG story/characters. What do you guys think?

Some technically competent member has to do it though. I'm quite technically challenged.

They take about 8 hours or so mininum depending on your computer speeds. Every bit of fighting, star base construction, and wonder building requires additional time. Governors really streamline the process.

If you manage to build all the wonders and trade goods, and own about half of the map, many planets should start flipping by the end of the tech tree. The remaining ones just take a little bit of nudging - destabilization or a couple party palaces.

Maybe it's because I generally play with fewer, clustered stars. So it's harder to flip enemy systems because of the large physical seperation. In my current maso/huge/rare I control 2/3 of the star systems and no one is even thinking about flipping. I usually don't flip things unless I am actively culture-bombing the area.

I'll try an abundant/scattered game next time and see what happens.

Name: Miles Naismith nee Vorkosigan

Class: Dual class-- 2 levels Monk, 4 levels Bard

Alignment: Lawful Nuetral

'Twas a dark and stormy night at the tavern, and I found meself looking down into me ale mug wondering what 'twas next for me. Betwixt and between was I, neither here nor there in any adventure party. A white-robed cowled figure strode up to me table just then as if appearing by magic, and said "I am Ray aka 'The Wanderer'. Ye look to be just the type of folk I need to round out me party."
"Surely you need others," I replied.
"We always need others," said Ray equably.
"I am inexperienced, but growing in knowledge and power by the month--me thinks I can be of value to your cause," stated I earnestly.
"Let us go meet the other's--they're staying at the Fellowship Inn."
Eagerly I followed Ray The Wanderer out of the tavern towards the inn. In the lobby was a raucous bunch of rogues who spake at us, "We are the rogues in this town, so don't go gettin' no ideas 'bout messing with us."
"We don't want any trouble with your type. You can have your underworld as far as we're concerned," stated Ray amiably.
I then met the others, and a fine bunch were they. I could tell I had joined the right adventure party, such a diverse and rounded out group I had never seen.
Friendly faces all--I knew I would come to depend on them in battle as they would depend on me for support in me areas of expertise. Ray left me at the inn, never tarrying too long at any place, even at the Fellowship inn, going out in search of more adventurers. Putting in check me newfound enthusiasm, I resigned meself to observe the ways of this new group in order to find my role in the grand scheme of the whole adventure party social setting. The up-coming adventure and battle would be epic in scope, and keen was I to do me part.
...

Well that's it for now, I will post more RPG as more of the story unfolds.

Thanks for the welcome Five-O :D

But Miles, what if the agent of the Underworld follows you? Just your friendly local Spymaster taking notes as he updates his files. :)

I have to say that not trading for tech is very boring to play. It's harder but so much slower. Right now I just finished testing out a new land grab technique, but it looks like it's going to only work on gigantic.

But I've played two years where I am not trading for any tech at all. All I know is that it's going to be long game.

Devolping a eager thirst for ale I left the inn to go back to the tavern. In the city streets I was accosted by a stranger who said he knew me.
"What's my name then," said I.
"Naismith," replied the man dressed as a man of imperial attire of the kingdom G.R.O.S.S.
"What do you want of me?" I inquired.
"I know who you are and we're watching you. Watch your step," said the stranger.
"Be gone," stated I evenly, "I don't need any trouble for meself."
Haunted by me past was I, and me prior troubles with
the G.R.O.S.S. kingdom was coming back to drop on me like a karma anvil. Knowing the enemy was honing it's blades for a imminent battle, I fled back to the safety of the Fellowship inn breathing heavily.
(:(

Edit: I hate when I get dyslexic in my typing

It's not that bad, Gengsta. Even though I researched most of my techs, I still managed to finish my game in 17 game years. It basically involves spending money on research consistently to get in the techs quickly.

But yes, it is so much easier and quicker just to trade for them.

Great to see you getting so quickly into the swing of things, Miles. :)

We have lots of visitors in our thread. The Spymaster Gerakken is a frequent visitor and a friend of the Fellowship. He works often in the shadows, observing the comings and goings of every empire.

And you have chosen a very unique class, Miles. A multi-classing monk/bard. I wonder what kind of songs this monastic bard sings? We have another bard in the Fellowship, Michael Casey.

I'm going to script you into our MMORPG as a battle-song singing warrior monk. :)

You hit the nail on the head, but mostly I do epic instrumentals, due to a deep voice. LOL

I may shame myself by posting this but here's a battle song I wrote a while ago:

SPACE TIGER

Somewhere in the darkness of space
A Space Tiger, predatory grin on his face
Elite force on the prowl
Spots an unsuspecting enemy
Engines roar a ferocious growl
And yet approaching so stealthily
Hidden behind Pantheus’ moon
Ready to pounce, cat eyes focusing

Lord of the jungle void
Wearing his colors with pride
Armed to bloodthirsty teeth
Stealing through the dark
Powerful prey he seeks
Paw and maw anxious to strike
Living by his fierce creed
He’ll earn his black stripes tonight

Springing forth with lunar acceleration
He closes on the suprised foe
The quarry bolts, an adrenalin reaction
A chase ensues, emotions soar
Photons not finding an agile target
Flitting ship awash in light and shadow
Time-delay bombs from prey eject
Pursuer’s craft rumbles, a wounding blow

Lord of the jungle void
Wearing his colors with pride
Armed to bloodthirsty teeth
Stealing through the dark
Powerful prey he seeks
Paw and maw anxious to strike
Living by his fierce creed
He’ll earn his black stripes tonight

Time and space bending in their wake
Iron-willed bloodlust consumes his mind
The enemy he will break
The opportunity he must find
Observing his quarry flee
Anticipates the move with glee
Firing weapons still online
Claws and teeth purchase hull
Pathways surge to engine spine
Overloads and explodes in fiery shambles

Lord of the jungle void
Wearing his colors with pride
Armed to bloodthirsty teeth
Stealing through the dark
Powerful prey he seeks
Paw and maw anxious to strike
Living by his fierce creed
He’ll earn his black stripes tonight

He tarries only to make repairs
Then continues stalking the stars.

Too bad no one sings space songs, but if they did they would definitely need action like this has. :D

I swear I was going to ask you to post a battle song and lo and behold, you post one.

Your battling compatriots may not have a clue what a Space Tiger is but they are going to be hearing this song sometime soon. :)

Keep those compositions coming!

Idleprocess opened his eyes. His face was ashen and he looked tired.

“My wizard eye spell reveals that the Undead encampment lies just behind the small knoll to our west. Their main command camp is on top of the knoll. Be warned, they have foul magicians among them. One of them detected my presence and sent a stalker after me. I barely managed to withdraw in time.”

The Fellowship and their allies were gathered in counsel, planning the defense of the Halls against the impending Undead onslaught.

“Where’s Ray and our wizard brethen? They will know how to deal with those necromancers.” Miles the warrior monk wondered out loud.

“They are recuperating from the encounter with the Ring.” They turned to see HawaiiFive-O emerging from a side Hall. “The safety of the Halls is in our hands.”

“Idleprocess, what else did you see? How many Undead do we face?” Theleb asked.

“The zombies and skeletal warriors are too numerous to count. I noticed something though. They have powerfully built warriors clad with dark armor mounted on hellish mounts. Not too many but they number about a dozen or so.”

Barry spat on the floor and grimaced. “Those are Death Knights. I have had skirmishes with them before. They are more skilful than a Rohan Battlerider and have better range but these demons are not so hard to kill.” Smiling at his last statement, Barry fingered his gleaming double-handed great sword.

“They will be the first to arrive.” Gibbie the dark elf murmured. “The Undead use them as shock troops. Meeting them on open ground spells certain death for us. We must think of a plan to isolate them.” Gibbie’s eyes glinted.

Their discussions were interrupted by a loud voice from without.

“Hail, members of the Fellowship! We have been sent by the Spymaster to assist in the defense of the Halls.”

“My name is Plephart, a ranger of the nearby woods. With me is Darth Bob, a thief/illusionist from GROSS Bay.”
