Being a somewhat educated swede I know that the capital of Canada is Ottawa and not Toronto, but what I don't know is what you mean by "the Maritimes", east or west coast? Could it be around newfoundland?

It's the east coast: Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scoita, New Brunswick. The west coast is referred to as the west coast. At least by those of us not on either coast. Don't ask me why... :)

Technically the Maritimes do not include Newfoundland. It's a fine point many people don't know, and probably don't care about.

When people want to refer to the Maritime provinces as well as Newfoundland, they call them the "Atlantic Provinces".

Bottom line is, they're all on the East Coast and touch the Atlantic Ocean.

I'm originally from New Brunswick, but moved to Nova Scotia at 16, so I consider both home. I just refer to myself as a Maritimer. It seems especially appropriate considering I grew up in 5 separate cities in the Maritimes. My father was in the military. Back in the 70s and 80s we still had one! :-)

P.S. I was in Stockholm in June. I loved it! I thought it was the most beautiful of the Scandinavian/Baltic port of call I went to. In fairness, I didn't go to many: Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Talinn and Coppenhagen.

I was in Helsinki on business once. Nice city. I was particularly struck by sense of age, of history. In comparison Quebec City is a young. :-)

Helsinki was founded in the 1560's so it's a young city by our standards! I come from Uppsala which has great pagan burial mounds dating from the 5th century, the chief temple of the swedish vikings and the greatest cathedral of the nordic countries (IMO) as well as the oldst university, boasting the father of botany, CM Linné, as well as the inventor of centigrade, Anders Celsius.

Maritimes as I think about them, were known as the French territory called Acadia.

Yes, well, I'm guess I'm what you consider the other side. I don't really think of my self that way. Happened too long ago in a different set of circumstances. Being a country with a mix of peoples and cultures is a really good thing as far as I'm concerned. Good people are not exclusive to any one culture or place. Bad people either for that matter. But in the CSF all stand together. :)

We stopped warring almost 200 years ago when the russians finally whuped us and took Finland, I find it hard to care about old wars and such, at least I don't hold a grudge against thr ruskies for beating us, BTW, we whooped them plenty in earlier times, even sacked moscow and installed our own tin-pot czar.

Anywho.. France beat Britain (England) plenty of times even though the Brits won in the end. It all evens out in the long run.
