I long for any perspective-shattering event to happen. Whether it be the discovery of life elsewhere, even microbes would do. Or proof of the paranormal, or even some major survival crisis that requires the efforts of all of humanity to overt destruction. Something needs to happen on this planet, I’m so freakin bored with the mind numbing smallness of current events. I would gladly have chosen less safety and spent the money and resources on say a prob

If you have always felt you needed freedom from existence then you’re suffering from clinical depression, just like Sylvia Plath. And that’s a disease that they can cure in this hypothetical. Your pro-life stance would certainly suggest you think life is worth it. Living longer will take considerable effort, with lengthy therapies and hospital stays, all very expensive a certainly optional so you could always opt out if you want. The other 10

I still wouldn't want to live forever. Not here, at least. I'm already bored half to death, I don't like the assholes I share this planet with, and the endless tedium and abscence of challenge would drive people mad. (have you read no vampire books at all? lol) Maybe you’re bored because you have a feel

I ask -- Why the hell would you want to? What if youth, health and fertility were part of the deal LW? What if you could be a great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother? You would be the head of a hundred or more descendents. Think of the status you would have. Death is only something you look

Well the aging bit is Carlin I saw him perform it, I don’t know about the how to stay young bit. I think all comedians should be able to legally smoke marijuana. It’s the funny maker.

I had a really nice fishing weekend that I thought I would share. Once or twice a year I go over to my childhood friends place in Fort Myers, Florida, for a three-day fishing weekend. We have been fishing together for almost 40 years and we always do well but the fishing last weekend was really exceptional. We left out of Punta Gorda Friday and headed stra

On which planet are you living? Tell those who died in the tsunami of a few years ago how much control over the environment we have; or those who died in the even more recent Japanese earthquake. As to your fantastical notions of turning aside giant asteroids... The only plans currently available as a response to such an eventual

And? Do you think the thing evolved from appreciates the thing evolved into? Do you feel any kinship with the protoplasmic slime you evolved from? Earlier hominids are dead and gone. Do you think the fact of your existence, if they could be made aware of it, would console them for their deaths as individuals; or their death as a

Very amusing article, I don’t agree that man will die out though. Everything dies in nature to facilitate evolution. Intellect will put us in charge of our own evolution and we will become immortal and spread out amongst the stars. And when this universe dies we’ll simply move to a younger one or make a new one.

But in the end the danger was always there. The chance of you car being stolen still existed. Most security systems are designed to deter not stop a crime. That's my point. When it comes to terrorist, we are never less safer as long as they are determined to kill us What we need to do is have an iron fist, we need to put our foot

I’m sorry this article makes no sense. Do you not understand the concept of less and more? If it’s not possible to make us less safe then it’s not possible to make us safer. But we know that’s not true. If we leave Iraq that’s going to make us less safe, right? I personally, even though I have never supported the war, believe it has made us safer. I just believe the resources used could have made us allot safer if used differently. Its odds, w

Wealthy countries like us will be the leaders in this new frontier, when it is possible to manufacture goods cheaper here in robotic factories than outsourcing I guess will start back towered and industrial economy. Economy shifts happen slowly though, only a couple of percentage points are predicted for the next decade. I don’t think that’s going to fast enough I believe the only way we will be able to keep up physically and intellectually w

"I'd probably still go to my mechanic. I like him, we get on well, and he's never tried to cheat me. Add to that the bonus that he given damn good advice on lots of different car things in the past and I probably would still go to him rather than paying a fifth as much to get a service I can never wholly trust. A combined service would be much better". I shouldn't have asked that question because It's really impossible to answer from your p

Cacto, I have no doubt many will always prefer humans over machines for some services but many others will prefer machines. Haven’t you ever been sure your auto mechanic was ripping you off? Wouldn’t you chose to take your car to a machine mechanic that’s 5 times as fast and cost a fifth as much? Lets face it humans can be dishonest scoundrels and many will prefer the simple selfless strait forward logic of machines for services. I w

Much of what you eat now is processed and packaged by machines, it's for more sanitary. A machine would never drop the occasional hair, bead of sweat or saliva as they talk.

I think more often than not people like hairdressers; message therapist and sales clerks annoy us. I know sometimes I wish my barber would just shut the hell up. And rude under strained and pushy sales clerks are mostly what I encounter, I’m sure there will always be those that prefer to deal only with real people but most of them will be out of work. McDonald’s is saying many of there restaurants will be almost fully automated by 2020.

Yes I think they will be able to repair themselves. Or at least recognize a malfunction and have another machine specifically designed to repair them do the work. But your right some malfunctions might require the technical expertise of there creator, but these would require a very complex skill set that only a few humans could ever obtain. I agree there are many jobs that may always require a human touch. Doctors, Psychologist, Artist, Scie

In the coming decades and certainly by the end of this century machines will be capable of doing almost any job humans can, and many they can’t. They’ll work 24/7 without pay; they won’t require businesses to observe safety regulations or any of the trappings that come with human employees. Since they will be quite capable of repairing themselves and each other, maint

I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt on so many decisions but every time he opens his mouth I’m embarrassed to the point that I can hardly listen. Being able to communicate effectively is such a key quality in a leader and he’s definitely the worst ever at it. I mean I’ve heard speakers fumble words, but they’ll stop and correct themselves. Bush just keeps right on going; he gives the impression that he doesn’t fully understand the wor

Nowhere in my brief sarcastic reply to LW’s brief and sarcastic statement did I suggest liberalism should be the prevailing ideology. I believe in a balance. Especially considering that the average LIBERAL from 50 years ago would be far too conservative for todays liberal circles. Given the idea that conservatism destroy

I don't see one response as more empathetic than the other, and in fact, I see the conservative response as MORE empathetic because the solutions they seek are far more permanent, and their good effect long lasting. No, conservatives are definitely not more empathetic but I’m not trying to say that’s a
