Anything worth having has to be worked for, dharma. Very well said. It's true. I know I'll definitely be thinking about the two of you. I can't imagine being apart from each other for so long. God bless the military families--I don't know if I could do it. Maybe you two should find some swa

Hmmm...How about this? Maybe theaters should use pagers. I know that our church uses them for parents who leave their kids in the nursery. If you're a parent at a movie or something else, you tell the person at the counter your name and what movie you're going to. The counter person gives you a pager, much like those you would get at a restaurant until your table is ready. You keep the pager with you in the theater, and then if an emergenc

Agreed, wholeheartedly. The only time I've ever wanted to commit homicide is the time someone's phone rang during my grandfather's funeral. And the mofo TOOK THE CALL. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SERVICE. My cell is the only phone I have. And I mostly just talk to Ryan on it. But...I won't even talk on it in the grocery store.

Everyone came to our house a few days before Christmas and we all exchanged gifts and laughed and played. Christmas Eve it started snowing, and we ended up snowed in with all our loot and no power! We couldn't go to work or even leave the house! It was awesome! We played with the little ones in the snow (Orian had the CU

Marcie: What cute traditions! it sounds like your family really makes the most of the holidays 1999-ouch! That had to be rough! It's good though that you can now look back and laugh! Where in the world are your articles?? they aren't coming up... The holidays are kind of depressing...in all reality I hope sometime soon Ryan

Yes, Please! That would be wonderful!! But you have to let me pay for postage. That's awesome, Marcie! Thank you! Bah...it'll be two dollars. Email your address to me and I'll try to dig it up and get it out to you right after Christmas. No problem. I hope Jake's better at it than I was. I sucke

I can't really pinpoint a year, but up until 1999 when my father passed away, I think the adults on my father's side of the family really tried to make Christmas magical for us kids...and it was. Christmas Eve everyone would converge on my grandparent's two bedroom teeny-tiny little house. Most of my father's 7 brothers and sisters would be there (we lived all over the state and the country though, so there were usually a few absent), along w

One of my favorite lines from Mr. Holland's Opus is when Mr. Holland is talking to the principal after finding out that they're cutting the music program and Mr. Holland says "What are the students going to read and write about, Gene?" I think the arts are VERY important to academia. The math and the writing don't matter much if you can't use it or enjoy it. I love music. It's touched my life in so many different ways. I'm not good at "performing"

Yay! Congratulations! I think lots of people our age go into marriage thinking about Cinderella...and I don't know ANY marriage that's a Cinderella princess type of marriage. They're freakin hard work. And I think its cool that you realize that. Marriage is hard work, but it's definitely one of those things that's WORTH the hard work. I've also known my share of young women who got married just for the sake of getting married...NO

Oh I detest that show. The girl on it....are egotistical morons. I'd LOVE to see a 'Trading Spouses' type situation with the girls from that show. They could trade places with some underprivileged kid - get a taste of what life's REALLY about. They'd bitch and moan and call up mommy and mommy would

I wrote earlier this year about that stupid ass show on MTV, "My Sweet Sixteen"...the absolute selfish arrogance of those girls is absolutely ridiculous. They wouldn't have one character strength to stand on if mommy and daddy weren't there pumping money into them. It makes me want to hurl.

They are getting it from the media! They're getting it from the media, but the media also tells us what we want to hear. Does that make sense? There's obviously a market for such crap, or they wouldn't be spewing it. I agree though. Wholeheartedly. Our definition of "smart" has gone from wh

Whoooeee...Polly's got Christmas eyes...one red, one green! "Oh to be a cat" is right. Our cat is so spoiled...but she's going to have to wait till after Christmas for her present.

No bat, they might cite me for workplace violence. I'm just getting very down on myself, because it seems that this stuff is way harder than it seems. My logic is this: I'm a good public speaker. I am a fountain of useless information. Therefore I should be able to impart that wisdom to the masses.<B

This is coming from the resident teaching psycho, so beware. Use what they're giving you in class--but kick it up a notch. Definitely use those games, and don't be afraid to "go back to elementary school" if you will. Have your students do lots of hands on things. Know that the best way to have to learn something is to have to teach it--sometimes your students make the best teachers. I've got babies, mind you, but they love to help

She's VERY aware of her body and how it's changed and is changing. She's not interested in wearing short skirts and belly shirts, and she also understands why girls who wear those clothes get more male attention than girls who wear jeans and tees do. She's pretty astute for her age, and I can't help but think that's due, in part,

Very cool. I think it's also cool that Shea, from what you have said in the past, is cool about having her own funky sense of style but doing it in a modest way--she doesn't want all those teenage parts hanging out. SHE isn't like that, versus you MAKING her dress modestly. There's a lot to be said for having that kind of character at thirteen. You should be very, very proud of your daughter...and of yourself and D for instilling th
