PS - I think, as a whole (meaning people in general), the biological urge to reproduce is important (ok, obviously, LOL). As individuals, I certainly don't think it's critical. Some great advances could not be made by someone with lots of family obligations...or else, they'd need to completely neglect said family. I think we've evolved past the point where reproduction is the pennacle of our forward thrust as a species.
or I had 4 or 5 kids, then the work increases.
LOL, Karma! I was thinking...I *still* have to catch up on the weekends! Being a parent really is a never-ending job because the messes always pile up, clothes are being worn, dishes used, food eaten up and dropped, etc, etc, 24/7. We chose for me to stay at home because it was very stressful to have both of us working. We weren't able to spend adequate time with the children and family time

Are you close to graduation? LOL, most of the classes you picked sound (key word being sound!) like cake, haha. I always hated early morning classes. I had a weight training class at like 8 am and Adrian had chemistry at that time...we had like an hour and a half drive to school, plus we had to get ourselves and the kids up and out in the morning. I had to get up so early I'd regularly throw up before we left. YUCK! There are times when I think I

I think in some ways maybe it could be considered overkill (especially depending on the degree). If I had it to do all over again, I am not sure I would have gotten my degree when I did (now I wouldn't regret having earned it BEFORE I had children...I just don't like the time it took away from my family). I do think it's important for women to have skills, education, plans, credit score, etc. to fall back on in case of an emergency if they are not working outside the home.

My apologies if your grandmother is completely sharp-witted at 90 and lives for debate. I know some older people are mean and do try to start arguments or upset people, but I generally think it's better to let them have their way, LOL, rather than try to sort things out and upset them more. I really *was* picturing having this conversation with my Gran-Gran (she's not a Democrat, but she does get stuck on certain topics, including political ones) and thinking...wow, that's

I think it's kind of mean to bait and argue with a 90 year old woman. She's old...let her think what she wants! I intentionally avoid heated discussions with my grandmothers (alzheimers) because I don't think it's fair to get her riled up or upset. She does say offensive or misguided/wrong things, but I don't think it's kind for me to give her grief about it. I dunno. I mean, is it really that important that she explain herself to you satisfactorily?
You accused us of being crass and divisive remember?
No, I didn't. Please read that again. The NEWS ARTICLES I'VE READ REGARDING THE WOES OF THE SUPER RICH ARE CRASS AND DIVISIVE. I would also suggest that you and your husband made choices that put you in the position you were in when you were living in poverty at age 29. You two were obviously responsible and make good choices later that lifted your family out of poverty, but I don't th
As far as "kvetching" about others
I didn't get the impression you were complaining about "having" to care for others...I read it as your sharing concern you have for those around you who are struggling due to illness, finance, etc. ?? KFC: I don't really disagree with you guys on this. We all make choices and live with those choices. I also don't feel sorry for the douchebags who drew out enormous home equity loans on family homes they

You guys must not be reading the same news articles I am, because there's a lot of stuff out there that is just plain offensive to working American families trying to make ends meet. Literally articles asking us to feel sympathy (!!!) for people who are having to cut back and suffer the indignity of flying First Class instead of via their own private jet. I don't care HOW they got the money to afford that kind of lifestyle in the first place (and I'm not under the impression tha

For me, this is not a topic I generally spend a lot of time thinking about, but lately it seems like I have been bombarded from all sides with it...online communities I visit, the news, friends, etc. are all talking about it. And what I am getting the most is complaints and fears from the wealthy. I am sure it probably feels like to those with money that they are constantly hearing sob stories from the middle class and poor, so maybe it's more that that's what is standing

Jill, I think a lot of the negativity going on right now is due to resentment and jealousy. I know *I* feel that. Not necessarily that others have done well, but at the fact that it seems to be FLAUNTED in the news, just how wealthy the wealthy are, while the middle class (and below) are getting all this doomsday feedback making them fearful that they just won't be able to survive period, much less afford a vacation home or go on a European vacation. I read an article rece

If someone is making money off of EIC, they are neglecting their children. EIC doesn't cover the cost of feeding, clothing, and providing for a child. No way. Someone who has more kids in hopes of getting a bigger check is really bad at math or starving his/her kids. If I'm not mistaken, the cut off for EIC is 3 kids anyways. Regardless of whether it's right or wrong that EIC exists, only an idiot would believe they would come out ahead popping out anot

I have been doing my blogging on a different site, but since I originally wrote about this on JU and got a lot of insightful input here, I thought I would update here as well. First, we (well, I) brought up the bullying issue at a P/T conference. That really went nowhere. Then Adrian came home from work and observed when the boys got out of school. He had instructed the boys to not say anything or acknowledge him and he would just observe. That da

Heh, we are middle class (well, lower middle class) "poor" because of what we owe, but we are working on it. It's pretty ridiculous to be closing in on 30 and have debts instead of savings and assets and investments. Yuck!

SH80, THANKS, that is really helpful! I agree that kids tend to be mean-spirited, and I think especially at this age. My own child is not immune to that. He can be very cruel to his brother. He does kind of stand out at school and is a little different, so he tends to be a target for bullies. His way of socializing (and you've seen it) is not always beloved by his peers. I am really upset that it's a large group of kids and that it's happening so vi
