I taught for a bit, and the cell phones were a complete pain in the fundament. The school's solution was, if they had their cell phone out in class or it went off, it was confiscated and they had to go to the office and pay 15 bucks to get it back. Cool. The lace patterns are sometimes faster too, but they're better to do after you've got a little practice in. You might want to get some needle caps for the ends if you haven't yet. It helps keep the stitches from slipping off when you're not working on them.

Grab a set of size 13 needles and one skein on Lion Brand Chenille Thick and Quick, any color. Cast on say about 40 stitches, then go to town in stockinette stitch.
