I think Bill Pullman from Independence Day made a good president . . . let's write him in. Actually, how about Kevin Kline from "Dave"? I don't know, I kind of like Josiah bartlet from the west wing. A little liberal but none the less a good president.

The missle defense system is a good Idea, but it is a failure. They have allowed it to continue in development while suspending tests completley. It is absurd and a waste of tax payer money. The system has never worked, and never will work. Maybe they should have spent more time coming up with the shield rather than insisting it be ready right away. We aren't in the cold war, and nobody is going to nuke us unless they want to be turned into piles of me

CrispE- if the government shut down churches, believe me that people would be outraged and would oust not only the president but every sitting congressman and sentator who voted in favor of that. In fact, people might be so mad they might just vote everyone out whether they were in favor of the bill or not.

cwarsh and sandy2: You're both newish bloggers I think, or at least I don't remember seeing your names anywhere. Sir Peter is not quite real - he's a fictional character. However here his points, particularly about tactics and troop movements were yet to be said, so his posts will stand. thanks. I was k

Wait. So explain to me how it is the republicans that would never agree to a change in the tax structure. More than 90% of taxes are paid by the top 10% of income earning people. Since republicans tend to favor tax cuts that help the wealthy, how would they not agree to a sales tax which considerably would lower the burden placed on the wealthiest 10%. Or are you talking about the wealth tax? Florida has a successful Wealth Tax. And a wealth tax modele

When a tourist from california visits Michigan they have to pay michigan sales tax. By the same token, why shouldn't tourists have to pay sales tax in this country?

IF we closed all our foreign military bases and got out of Iraq, that would probably yeild us $300B a year that we could put towards the debt. I agree that we should do this too. Not only because it will help us prevent terrorism (there is another post on th

Well I stated that hopefully it would become a permenent tax. Believe me, if we are generating a surplus (I think we should have a 500 billion dollar reserve for emergencies by the way), a tax cut will be given. Cwarsh- I said that in cases of emergencies we should have an aditional emergency tax. Another way to handle the situation would be to have a 1 trillion dollar emergency reserve).

I agree that the situation is desperate. Because we have such a deficit right now, the first step is to mandate that deficits are not acceptable. Next, we should institute a temporary emergency national sales tax, except on raw uncooked un prepared food (food which is not from a eating establishment). This should also apply to services. This will apply to foreigners and all imported goods (a customs charge). If it were 5% then we would get aprox. 500 b

Someone said that foreigners wouldh ave to pay NST and that would be somewhat dificult. All that would happen is that when ever you purchased something, a tax would be added so even foreigners would pay with no special paperwork. I believe that there should also be a National Services Tax and a National Wealth Tax (that taxes a portion of your accumulated wealth, therefore the wealthy would pay at least a little more taxes, but then again they should i

Bakerstreet- On public property I have the right to peacefully protest. Only in extreme cases where it may compromise security can I be required to not protest at a certain time and at a certain place. I can not be required to protest in a specified area, as the constitution protects the freedom of speech in any public area. The police sometimes prevent you from doing so, but when arrested a court usually finds the protester not guilty. I think you nee

Well, actually right now the government makes significantly more in social security taxes than it pays. It takes in about 800 billion in S.S. taxes, and pays about 500 billion. The problem with social security will be seen however when baby boomers start to retire and social security will become bankrupt. I think that though sad, the only solution is to let it become bankrupt and then completley restructure the system, because like you said people shou

I see your point however I feel that withdrawing from the middle east into europe will be much more benificial. We can still collect inteligence, using spy satelites and stealth spy planes, but we should not have a strong military presence because it encourages non sanctioned terrorist attacks. At least otherwise it would be an actual war and we could go in with a full supply of troops and actually fight. In a defensive war, we would be allowed to do m

And allow anti-western elements to dominate, do not be so silly. Who cares if they dominate the middle east. They can do what they want there, as long as they dont threaten us or our allies. Ah. So I see. The ex-general is all knowing. I was not suggesting we transport thousands of people, no

The only time there has been an attack on US soil by islamic radicals was on 9/11. That seems pretty recent to me. We have fighter planes that fly faster than the speed of sound. Even if we have our nearest base in england or germany, we can get to the middle east pretty fast. If we stop supporting Israel, and tell them that we have had enough and they are going to have to solve their own problems then there is no need for us to be there. If Iran wants

The problem with cutting our budget to 1 trillion is that between social security and medicare, more than 1 trillion dollars is spent. Further, an additional 400 billion is spent on paying our interest on our loans. The rest of the budget is pretty much defense spending, with everything else combined taking up another 500 billion dollars (including salleries for the 2 million federal employees).

He obviously has bad intentions against the west. The point here is not whether or not he is an evil evil man. We know that his is. The point is that it is not fully and soley because we are a democracy. It is also because we do somethings that although not meant to antagonize, clearly cause some animocity in the middle east.

Would someone like to guess what the third largest expense is for the United States Federal Government? Its the interest on our 7 trillion dollar debt, and it equates to more than 300 billion dollars. Only defense spending and the medicare (and other health/human services) cost more each year. Each person in this country holds $22,000 worth of debt, on top of any debt they might have. T

Also, how can anyone say that it is unconstitutional to pay taxes? There is an ammendment specifically related to taxes- stating that the federal government may force people to pay tax on their income, and that congress can enforce this with legislation including jailing.
