I'm trying to go for an early alliance victory, but if I play a good player the evil races hate me, and if I play an evil player the good races hate me. I set up all my trade routes with the races that don't like me, and give them lots of stuff, but I still can't get better than "warm." So I am wondering: Do you need to have a great military to get people to like you? If not, how can I get those other races to like me?

In my experience, freighters are re-homed to my homeworld of Sol. You're right, it is a great way to get freighters that are clear across the galaxy, and can set up some big money trade routes.
A good way to check on what bonuses are in effect for a planet is to click on the "Details" button, which is in the lower right. For example, the Hyperion Manufacturing Center gives a +100 to production for a single planet only, not for the entire system.
Thanks Technician, that explains a lot. My next question was going to be "How come the other races add population faster even though I've got better planets," but that answers it.
Sorry if this question has already been asked, but I searched the FAQ's and the forum. Let's say my social spending is at 50%, and Earth is cranking out 10+0 social production. If Earth isn't producing any social projects, what happens to that 10 BC (and the production they make)? Is it simply lost, or does the money go back into my treasury? What happens to military spending (I assume it's the same as social). Thanks!
