No easy answer to this one. I favor vaccination but, being of somewhat libertarian bent, have reservations about making it mandatory. Today's entry in the MS-customer cat-mouse game: Having previously hidden KB2952664 (see reply #16), it "auto-unhid" itself and was offered up again this morning as an "Important" update. What was also noteworthy was the absence of the usual SysTray icon alerting one to new updates. Only knew it was there when I opened the StartMenu, noticed the little shield in the Shut Down button & then opened Windows Update. They know there is a little war going on.&nbs

Elana - Open the browser, navigate to the page you want to use as your home page, say google.com for example. Open the Options dialog & click the General tab. You'll see the section at the top labeled Startup. Click the button that reads Use Current Pages... You're good to go.
The_Gear - All the files in the Users/.../ObjectDesktop folder are the same on the two rigs with the exception of ObjectDesktopManager.exe - it's missing on the rig where it self-destructed, present on the rig where it did not. Can't say what happened as there was no crash popup, error message or other sign of trouble. ODM just disappeared while updating or immediately after. Wish I had more. If there is a log file somewhere which might have some info

The_Gear - Thanks for your reply. Launched ODM on another of my rigs just now and it self-updated without going poof here, no reboot required. Learned that ODM is not a 'program' in the Program Files sense - it is tucked away in the User profile, which makes a certain sense but was certainly not expected so I hadn't looked for it there on the other rig. I'm not currently near the rig where ODM self-destructed on self-updating so I'll have to get

Object Desktop Manager? If so, you must already have a Stardock Account (as a consequence of a purchase) and the login credentials will be the same. However, you do not need ODM to install any of Stardock's software, it's just a handy way of managing multiple SD apps. Their apps are all available as standalone installers through the MyAccount page at store.stardock.com (obviously, once purchased).
Here's my understatement of the day (and only statement) re: Cecil. Some of the reaction to this has not been particularly well-researched or well-thought through.

Problem is, you really have no choice when it's in the EULA. Accept or don't upgrade. MS's 'privacy' policies should work like (and improve upon) Facebook's - go to a page with every item a clearly explained menu option, in or out. All or none is really no choice at all, especially when MS quits supporting your existing OS.

Wow. Just Wow.
I resisted the temptation to 'upgrade' Acronis to the 2015 edition and like Jafo use it and SyncBack routinely. Once set up, they just quietly do their thing, flawlessly - until the USB drive dies.
Long as you're here, The_Gear, any idea why ODM went all Mr. Phelps when it updated itself?
