The artifact that is supposed to reduce all research costs doesn't work for me either. Works for me... Don't remember the actual numbers but the costs dropped to odd numbers. Of course, I haven't hit that one yet in 66.

Blair Fraser: [Laughs] Yeah, they don't really care what happens, they just need to get resources quickly and then move on. This is one of the ships that does that. Oh, one of their other really cool ships--I don't want to give too much of its special functionality away--it's called the Marauder. What it basically has on it is a portable phase gate. One of the mechanics in Sins, there are specific areas in space that are like phase nodes. That's the area where you're a

If planet A has a large number of defensive structures and a large variety of defensive ships parked in orbit, a smaller enemy needs access to a cheaper device/technique to inflict a large number of casualties other than an offensive fleet of greater size (and cost) than the defender. Why? Turtling (or really, making a strongpoint on restricted terrain) is a time-honored tactic of warfare. Where were castles placed? On the open plain? In a v

Can you add another auto-stop for the Cap-Lock zoom control to show just the current solar system when there is more than 1 star? Or maybe allow us to pre-set/configure the zoom jumps? As it stands, if there is only the 1 system (small galaxy) the lowest zoom level is the entire solar system. If you use a larger galaxy, the lowest zoom shows all of the stars but it jumps there straight

Forgive the brief soapbox stand.... The entire banking system by its nature creates money or I should say wealth out of thin air No, only money is created - wealth is related to the proportion of the money outstanding that YOU control. The more the total money supply is increased, the greater the amount of money you have to have to maintain your wealth. you should NEVER go out on a buying spree with a credit

@ Kzeanu (#170) When this happens, expand the planet on the left and look at the bomber icons' strength lines - that will give you some feedback as to how much damage they are taking. (whether or not the special effects show it) Also, you mention that you have upgraded them via the carrier heavy fighter attribute - you're right - that does make a difference in their effectiveness. If you also activated the instant-build attribute of the carrier, those 3 squadrons will get replaced in

Just a proposal for discussion - When setting up a multiplayer game, will there be a provision to adjust the relative difficulties for the various players - Set a base difficulty, (which will guide any AI players and general game conditions) and then allow either harder or easier offsets (or settings) for the individual human players. This would open up a particular game to more folks without either boring experienced players &/or discouraging new ones [particularly local LAN games, I

I also don't quite see where you are coming from, here. Forgive me if I'm off base here, but you do realize that each game is a completely separate game from all other games. All participants need to be present at the start of each game. This isn't a persistant world or a massively multiplayer environment where you could "hang out your shingle" so to speak. In order for a game to end all of the players need to be defeated, including any "mercenaries" (at least now - any other situati

Then the combat odds (assuming that combat power, for purposes of this discussion, is proportional to cost) are only 1.25 to 1. And yes - I would expect the defender to win. Not without plenty of losses, and if the attack were focused the losses could be critical, but win overall nonetheless. In truth, the actual odds would depend on the unit mix, but additionally, you would have to expect that the stationary units (including the hangers - stationary in this case meaning no phase driv

Frankly, that's probably close to a tossup, although the capital ship advantage *should* tip the balance. Once you got past the Gauss cannon they are fodder waiting for the mopup. The general attack odds that should carry the day is about 3-1 (based on my *ahem* years of gaming ), and really on an entrenched enemy vs a frontal assault you would want 5-1. (Not to pick on the example, but only

Well, yeah, the initial rush attack was the KOL and 22 scouts, but they retreated when the KOL got to ~ 200 pts. Part of that damage happened when it ran the gauntlet through an asteriod g-well on the way to the terrestial planet that was the target. It's to be expected in the early game - the scout is the best all around frigate at that point. Later on you see the other types, and the 2nd rush attack generally has a number of capital ships as well as the scouts and some siege frigat

Nice looking home-away-from-home (particularly when you consider the hours all of you spend there ) Empty basement - hmmmmmm - *gazes into crystal ball* I see a dungeon relating to an un-named fantasy game.... inhabited by wild-eyed "cranky" creatures armed with 20 years of IT experience..... being beaten into submission by a valiant.. *tap* - *tap* - *tap* sorry, the color must be going...

As far as the 45/90 discussion, I come down on the side of 90 degrees, both from an intuitive viewpoint and from the thought process of figuring out where I am going to station reinforcements if I need to be able to send them to 2 different places. This will also play a role as to where I place frigate/cap ship facilities.

Nice to know... On a different note, when I was finishing up the game on version 62.10, I noticed that I had conquered and colonized a planet while 2 enemy shield generators were at still at full strength. Sorry , I didn't think fast enough to save it. I also noticed that after I had sent a portion of a (big) fleet that I had on group jump to take out an asteroid. When the squadron returned, the fleet wouldn't respond to any movement orders. I had to un-group jump them, ind

Of course, if Ironclad doesn't create a Phase Space Interdiction ship, it will be extremely rare for battles to occur around stars and why would you say that... I suspect it's because you could jump and jump, particularly if you know where an adjacent planet is and use that as your target instead of the star

Depends on how big/massive the black hole is. You could also use a neutron star radiating in non-visual wavelengths or a burnt-out brown dwarf. (I think this one is "tongue in cheek") Watch out trying to cross the star grav well - that center step is a doozy....

Actually, my concern is whether tech/programming issues will start to affect the game when the open-ended parameter of phase lanes (or really, by extention, any other parameter) gets to be a very large #. I picked on phase lanes in a fully connected map model because of the rapid growth potential. This would obviously have to be determined as we go along, but possibly could be handled by a warning to mod'ders such as "WARNING - Don't make maps with more than XXXX phase lanes (or locations, or.

We're in agreement here - I was only suggesting that tech issues may raise their ugly head(s) and trolling for dev feedback on same. And the interstellar phase lane / interplanetary freestyle format is one that will break the overall map into manageable regions as well as provide the opportunity to engage in economic empire building with some degree of operational security.
