Paul, Thanks for you offer. The saved game is on the way. I am not convinced it has anything to do with the tech tree. It may have more to do with something related to the size of things, such as a gigantic galaxy, the number of planets, the amount of space I have explored, the screen size or resolution (1280*1024*32bit), etc. Cheers, Jack

I have downloaded and installed drivers for the nVidea display adaptor (no luch) and the sound card. Believe it or not, I got a few more turns - then got the purple and pink screen of death. Are one of these smily face thingies beside the entry space I am entering this post in a face of frustration? My hair seems to be scattered all over my keyboard and display (not to mention the desk, floor, and chair). If anyone has any ideas of how to find out what is causing this and

John, Cari has provided some of us with a revised copy of GCTech.TECH that seems to solve this problem. I will send you a copy. Proper use of this new file requires renaming the old file to something with a different extension name, such as GCTech.old. Cari If you would prefer that I not propagate this file any further (new build, newer file, what ever) please let me know. Cheers, Jack

Paul, Function keys can't be accidentally stuck? You gotta be kidding. Any key with multiple uses, or keys whose use conflicts between applications can be struck with the intention of getting one action when the coded action is something else. It happens to me all the time. That is what all the hullabaloo was about during the 1980s and 1990s with "human factors". Brad was involved with some of the human factors discussion during the development of CalCiv OS/2. He committed a l

Frank, I am putting this hee instead of in a note because I think there may be many who have not yet noticed this. CalCiv appears to gather up definition files based on file extention. That is, the research project definitions are in file extension .TECH, Ship definitions are in files with extension .SHIP, anomolies aer in files with extension .ANOMOLY, social improvements in files with extension .IMP. So, if in preserving the file GCTech.TECH the file NAME

Noone would deliberately name two stars identically, but it could happen by accident, so I gave it a try. Then I saved the game, exited Galciv, and tried to restart it. I got the following trap 5 instantly after clicking on "load saved civilization": ------------ Stardock SmartException Logging Information 04/07/02 17:56:28 ------------------------------------------------------- Versions: Microsoft Windows Me Internet Explorer 5.50.4134.0100 Video Card :

Got this while exiting Galciv. I have not seen one of these for quite a while and all of them that have been reported seem to have scrolled off of the message board. I know you are not ready to tackle these just yet, but I would like to be able to compare the errors I get with others that have been reported so I can decide whether or not to add them for examination when you are ready to look at them. I don't want to report old crashes and I don't what to risk one slipping

Well, I have given up trying to load GalCiv onto my older PC. Some of the files are too big to move across via diskettes, the old PC doesn't have the support to read the CDs I burn on this PC, and I can't get a solid enough connection to download Galciv from Stardock. I did manage to get the DGM up and running, however. Any new ideas on how to get something meaningful on these screens of death? Cheers, Jack

Frank, I am sending you a copy of the tech file that cari sent to me. It contains corrections that allow you to get past the trap 5 when selecting one of the 5 research projects that had definition errors. It may be wise to keep a copy of the old tech file ("GCTech.TECH") before replacing it with the one I am sending you. Next, after installing this file and restarting your game, to you start getting the "screen of death" symptoms I have been getting? Cheers, <

The OS/2 version was almost playable without a mouse, so if Brad has the same philosophy about user interfaces now as he did then I would expect it to be so eventually. Using the enter key for a "done" button, while a good idea, might cause complications in the program in trying to determine which of many possible uses of the enter key was intended. Would using a "d" key, if there are no other plans for its use, be reasonable? Or another key (although the "d" key seems mos

I have seen this behavior too. It seems to happen on a periodic basis, about 2 weeks. I have the message board in my bookmark and am accessing it directly from the bookmark. Is it a security feature or procedure? Am I required to go through the home page? I use the bookmark to save time. Cheers, Jack

I spoke too soon. It crashed in 16bit color mode. It just took longer. I am now trying to figure a way of getting all of the galciv files and SmartException over to an older PC to try it there. It has an ATI mach64 PCI display addapter and an MWave sound card, so that will let me test the theories about my hardware being at the root of the problem. So far, however, no luck with the transfer. I may have to hook the other PC up to the net, load DGM on it and get it that way.

This problem only seems to happen when I get into the higher research projects. I may be the only oen getting there because of my tendency to test on a grander scale (gigantic galaxies for the most part). Or, it could have something to do with a difference in display adapter card. I am using a NVIDIA GForce2. In any case, just as soon as I switched back to 32 bit color the saved game I have that gives me these screens of death failed very predictably and quickly. <br

This may be a bit premature, but I have been doing all of my testing in true color (32 bit). I just changed to high color (16 bit) to test something else for Cari and where I was able to get the screen of death very quickly on restarting the game, I am now able to go to the nest turn. More testing on my part is needed, but is there anyone else out there testing with 32bit color? Cheers, Jack
