True, but there is also the defense bonus (I think yet to be implemented) of being in orbit. The plan I heard (and as it was in the OS/2 version) is that a ship in orbit gains in defense rating by being in orbit plus what defensive social projects the planets have built. Truth to be told, I am too direct to sit in orbit and wait for the enemy to come to attack me, but I have had some cases during testing that I found my ship had a better chance of survival waiting in orbit th

I have the impression that most people hate pressing the enter key (or clicking the turn button) for every turn, but I experience a feeling of loss of control when the game goes to the next turn and I am not quite ready. I am an advocate of the program disabling the turn function until either all takable actions have been completed or the user response to a query of "are you sure you want to end this turn". I guess I am just different. Cheers, Jack

I am not sure which I would consider better. A choice every time would ensure that I didn't choose one action by mistake when I wanted to do the other (i.e., if I am used to double clicking to leave orbit, will I accidentally double click when I want to right click? However, this would make the user interface more complicated. Or, Having to choose a direction every time would add to the steps a user had to make every time he/she wanted a ship to leave orbit

There is something very strange going on here. When we find out what is causing this we may be truly amased. The screen colors I get seem to be dependent on the last research project I selected or defaulted to for the few I have tried. My current research window gives me a choice of these projects: Cloaking, Battleship 2, Star democracy, Organic piecing, 2D phasing, Turbo phasers, Nano-metal composition, and Brain Mapping. With Cloaking I get the Purple and pink screen

Cari, I find it useful to be able to attack blockading ships from orbit. That is, if an enemy ship is sitting on the tile to which I would be exiting I will de-orbit a ship with considerable attack ability and destroy it. If we had the ability to leave orbit in a direction of our choice it would allow us more options in defending a system. Instead having to leave orbit and work around the star in x moves (which could mean several turns) we (and the enemy) could attack d

Cari, I started this in the thread "Trap 5 while changing tech research projects.". The first time I clicked on the "Battleship2" tech I got the trap 5. In examining the tech file I discovered that the "battleship2" tech did not have a keyword that those above it had called "overview", so I tried to add it (with Notepad). I got a message from Notepad that it could not continue due to lack of memory so I saved it, reloaded the file into Notepad, and completed the entry. I

Tony, See the thread titled "Trap 5 while changing tech research projects.". It is caused by a problem with the tech file. While I have been able to edit some of the problem away there are corruptions in the file that I can't edit out. I am hoping that the developers can provide with a corrected copy of GCTech.TECH quickly. Cheers, Jack

I also got the blue patern with white specks screen of death after clicking on the 2D phasing tech. Is it possible that the GCTech.TECH file has something in it that looks to Galciv.exe as a horrendously long character string it has to move into memory causing it to wipe out OS and periferal control memory? Cheers, Jack

Good question! Checking it out showed an additional symptom. The turn button works, that is it does advance the game to the next month. BUT... It still does not auto-select the scout ship. Only the find button will do select it at this point. And the enter key still does not advance the game to the next month, even after the turn button had been clicked. Only having a ship selected allows the enter key to advance the game to the next month. Chee

I thought I had managed to edit the problem out of the GCTech.TECH file for 2D phasing but I am unable to get past this tech. There are a lot of problems I reported on previous builds that I would like to check out but I can't get far enough into the game to do so with this problem. I need a corrected version of GCTech.TECH to do so. Please, correct this file and make it available to us. Thanks, Jack

Where you download it to doesn't seem to matter. I downloaded it to a directory I created called stardock. After downloading it execute it and reboot. It takes care of the rest. Also, it works for Galciv, the DGM, other DGM games, and I think it even works for other programs and applications. I also have SmartException report files for CIV3, talkback, and NAV. Cheers, Jack

When both a research project and at least one planet project are completed in the same turn the research completion gets lost and does not get a chance to bring up the tech selection screen. This was reported on a previous build but the thread has rolled off the bottom of the message board. This new thread is here to keep the problem on the message board. (I have my WinCustomize setting to way over 10 but all I see here is 10 days.) Cheers, Jack

This failed again on the Alpha 5 build. I got a blue patterned screen with lots of white dots this time. I checked first to see if it was a solid failure and the game restarted fine. Hence, I lost all of the file data that might have been useful. Sorry. Jack
