I would like to mention that this became a serious impedement to my testing GalCiv this weekend. My ISP developed modem problems that made it almost imposible to dial into the net. That and the "purple and pink screen of death" kinda curtailed my testing very seriously. Had GalCiv been on the desktop "START" menu somewhere, I would have been able to do more testing. The entire purpose of the Alpha and early beta is to locate and eliminate the bugs that interfere with playability. Playability and FUN factors are all part of the basic design, and the parts included so far, along with the stated plans for the parts to come, show great promise. Cheers, Jack
Brad, Cari should already have it in her reader. If not, I can send it again. Cheers, Jack
I tried starting from the autosave and it did this again before I could finish the current turn (this time giving me a pink and purple out of sync display of death). I noticed this time that the "open space" music continued for a couple of seconds after the screen went berzerk, then quit. The autosave files may be useable to recreate the problem. I have my display set to 1280*1024*fullcolor, if it matters. I have more than ample on board and swapper memory. Cheers, <br
Something happened to my first attempt to post this and it vanished. But, I got it again. The first time it happened it was as if my display unsynced - it had narrow horizontal rows of groups of mostly purple and pink lines of perhaps 2-3 pel vertially by about 160 pel horizontally. There were 8 distinct vertical rows. There were also a lot of yellow lines and some orange lines. The second time the lines were almost entirely blue with white speckles. In both ca
Brad, I agree with your philosophy here. As a case in point, I am about to toss Civ3 out the window because it is suddenly looking like it is geared to small worlds and I like to play large worlds. Civ3 has some severe flaws in how it calculates corruption and waste that make large worlds unplayable. It also looks like you can't complete the Alpha Centaury goal of the game with a small world. After checking their QA site it looks like this is all intentional, whi
Something has happened to my post. Some of the information I put here is missing. Also, there is another thread I entered that is not here at all ("Purple and pink screen of death"). I notice I had to log off and back onto the news group to get any posts I sent to work at all today. ------ The scroll bars I am talking about here are all of the scroll bars in the economy window; "tax rate", "spending rate", percentage ratios of resource allocation "military", "so
Scott, It vanished again. I got your stardock e-mail address from your nickname, so I will send the entire prefs.ini file to you. Cheers, Jack
Something went wrong when I sent the last post. Part of the data that I clipped from the prefs.ini file vanished when I sent it. I am sending the entire file to Cari via e-mail and will try to paste the missing part here again. --------- [GameOptions] >>>>>> 1.11 ======= MusicVolume=GameOptions AutoTurn=1 AutoBuild=1 DisableSfx=0 DisableMusic=0 GNN=1 ViewAttack=1 ViewAttacks=1 >>>>>>> 1.15 ------ Cheers, Jack
I may be having the problem because I tested whether or not the options settings would be saved and restored across saved games. I had all of the options off for a while. Now when I turn music off the music comes on. When I turn music on the music quits. I checked the prefs.ini file and here is something strange: ------ [GameOptions] >>>>>> 1.11 ======= MusicVolume=GameOptions AutoTurn=1 AutoBuild=1 DisableSfx=0 DisableMusic=0 GNN=1 Vie
I think the secret to this problem is the difference created with autoturn off. With autoturn on there is always a ship with moves left selected and this problem does not exhibit itself. With autoturn off it is possible to save a game with a ship selected that no longer has any moves left. Cheers, Jack
The arrows for the planet list scrolling function are nice, but -- There is no longer a scroll bar with a tab we can grab and without the ability to scroll a "page" at a time. Scrolling one planet at a time is too cumbersome. It also slows down game play. Cheers, Jack
This has come up before. Traditionally a ship de-orbits north. With this build (Alpha 4) the ships in the gigantic galaxy I am playing are de-orbiting south. (It would be great if we could choose the direction each time we ordered a ship to leave orbit.) Cheers, Jack
Having anomaly icons tied to anomaly types would allow us to take specific action before surveying them. For instance, if there was a specific anomaly icon for the research anomaly it would allow us to take best advantage of the anomaly. But, this might detract from the randomness of the game. You will have to weigh which way you want to go on this. Cheers, Jack
Here is a refinement on what I am seeing. If the game is saved at end of turn with autoturn off, I get this behavior. If the game is saved with a ship not on autopilot with move counts left the game reloads with the ship data window closed. I have not tried this with autoturn on as yet. Cheers, Jack
Scott, Interestingly, build 3 would loose the sector screen music but not the tech completion music when a game was reloaded. Now the tech completion music is also missing after a reload. So is the "planet" music (thunder shower, birds singing, etc.). Cheers, Jack
When a name is entered in the prompt for a name when colonizing your first planet in a star system the name only appears in the sector view. It does not appear in the star system window (showing the planets in the star system, on the right) or in the planet list. Cheers, Jack
Just curious. If it is supposed to be there now, it isn't on mine. Cheers, Jack
The four cord "music" is gone when a saved game is restarted. This failed on the Alpha 3 also. Cheers, Jack
What event markers should we be seeing? In the last build the only marker I saw was what looked like a cyclone (or perhaps it is ment to look like a worm hole?) With the Alpha 4 build I have now seen three icons for these markers, the cyclone, a double cyclone, and the older "blossoming flower" icon. Is there a significance to the different icons? Is each icon supposed to indicate its own type of event? Cheers, Jack
The selected ship status window remains open when a saved game is loaded which hides the "done" button of the tech window. Bypass: Click on the tech icon in the bottom window and the selected ship status window shifts to its closed state exposing the tech window's "done" button allowing you to close the tech window. Cheers, Jack
Build alpha 4 - 3/28/02. I am sending the debug file to Cari. There are a number of messages in it that might indicate some memory management problems. Also, I am starting to get some strange errors from other programs (like netscape and the file manager), so I am going to re-boot and see if they go away. Cheers, Jack
Alpha 4 build - I can grab the indicator and drag it close to where I want with the mouse pointer but I can not fine tune them with the scroll arrows. Cheers, Jack
This still happens on the 3/28 build (alpha 4): I could not find out how to find the original thread for this problem so I am creating a new one. This problem still exists. It keeps writing the following three lines to the debug file as fast as it can while in background (minimized). ----------- Debug Message: Trying to restore back surface. Debug Message: DirectDraw Error: WRONG MODE Debug Message: Lock: Unable to restore surface. ------------
Scott, We keep hearing from Brad "the beta will be available in May". You said May 1. Are you sure? Cheers, Jack
