Each planet with a comparative rank in the galaxy? Neat, but isn't the supporting code going to be costly on game performance? Cheers, Jack

Cari, I find that I generally start with the same settings for all the sliders on this window (tax rate, spending rate, social/military/research %) then adjust them as I feel needed during the game. I think this is the reason I was supprised some time ago that the current settings were saved in the .ini instead of with the game. My preference would be to save the positions at the start of the game in the .ini file and the current settings with the saved game. This would ma
Fredrik, Ships being placed on autopilot move immediately, then on subsequent turns do not move until you press the turn button. Is this what you saw? Or were the ships that did not move put on autopilot during a previous turn? While changing the movement of ships on autopilot from the start to the end of a turn has eliminated some problems I think some confusion could be removed by changing their movement to the middle of the turn (If any ships are on manual control
Arrgggg. Now the question is not quite right. Is each "Planetary_Quality_Bonus" applied only to the original planet class and added to the current planet class or is it applied to the the current planet class. On a class 20 planet (and with rounding down to the nearest whole number) you can get a class 33 if each improvement is applied to the current planet class, or a class 32 if the improvements are applied to the original class and then added. Chee
OOPPSS. Slight problem with proofreading. I should have said --- class 33 (20 + (.1 * 20) + (.5 * (20 + (.1 * 20)))). In other words, are the "Planetary_Quality_Bonus" cumulative or based solely on the original planet class? If cumulative, then with the current improvement definition file a planet at class 20 can become a planet class 33 after both social improvements are completed. Cheers, Jack
The OS/2 version had planets of class 32 at the start of the game once in a while. It was quite rare. Is this the way it is calculated? Start with a class 20, Soil enhancement enhancement gives a "planetary_quality_bonus" of 10 (10%?) = class 22, Terraforming gives a "Planetary_Quality_Bonus" of 50 (50%?) = class of 32 (20 + (.1 + .5) * 20) or 33 (20 + (.1 * 20) + (.5 * (20 + (20 + (.1 * 20))))). And is a class 20 the best planet we will ever see at the start of a ga
So this is happening to colony ships too. I reported a similar problem happening to battleships and avatars that were drifting off center of their tiles incrementally with each time they attacted an enemy ship, but I have not been able to get a game to the point I could test for this since Alpha 4. My games keep ending up with various colored patterned screens of death before I can get to where I can test for it. Cheers, Jack
Frank, This is one of the reasons I play with autoturn off. The end of turn is more evident. Since the movement of ships on autopilot have been changed from early in the turn to at the last of the turn it has resulted in some confusing actions, such as having a ship finish its autoturn and getting its last moves overlayed with project completions. I think one of the bugs here is that the "next turn" function should be suppressed until all ship movement has been <b
I have noticed this and find it a bit distracting and disconserting. Is there a way of smoothing this out? Cheers, Jack
The old PC has 98, and I forgot to try Alt-tab. Snce I was able to C-A-D, it might have worked. Cheers, Jack
I went and got a "ethernet in a box" and put it onto my two PCs. Then I tried the saved game for this problem. The performance of my old PC is remarkably slower than my new PC. However I was able to play for several turns until I explored a wormhole anomoly then it froze my PC. I was unable to do anything but to force a reboot. Cheers, Jack
Paul, Thanks, Jack
I may have to go to MOO3. I can't play MOO2 on this PC. It doesn't support a lot of the hardware I have. Cheers, Jack
Anyone? Cheers, Jack
Changing type = 2 to type = 0 worked for me. Now it adds 100bc to my treasury. Cheers, Jack
Frank, Thanks for your try. Hopefully Cari will get something out of the report that will lend a possible explanation to what I was getting. I have been trying for some time to rationalize some suspicions I have about the source of these crashes. One thing that keeps coming back to raise doubts about it being a problem with my PC is that I was able to get much further that this before build Alpha 4. I know that this doesn't really mean anything about the cause, so I ha
Paul, I like your option (e). If ranges ever get implemented the idea of claiming rights to star systems might make expansion more difficult for someone trying to expand into another's teritory. Goose sauce? Cheers, Jack
I just got this report while trying to save a game. I don't know of anything particular or unusual I might have been doing. This is a game that I have been running most of the day. I have saved it, exited to the desk top, and reloaded it many times. **************************** Stardock SmartException Logging Information 04/09/02 20:30:29 ------------------------------------------------------- Versions: Microsoft Windows Me Internet Explorer 5.50.4134.0100 <b
Oh, by the way, the comet anomoly ("Money01") works. Cheers, Jack
This is the first time I have seen this happen. This is with a new game I just started with a fresh download copy of Alpha 5. When the survey ship explores an anomoly set to this anomoly file it gives the popup with the "Bank error in your favor. Collect 100 bc." but fails to add 100BC to the treasury. Unfortunately, I noticed this too late to save a game before exploring an anomoly set to this file, so I don't have a saved game. However, in comparing this file with
Frank, Have you looked at some of the research projects that are available? Some of them are quite interesting, in terms of longevity enhancement, such as "Near Omnipotence" and "Beyond Human". Although these are rather far down the tech tree, there are others that can be researched earlier that are also intriguing such as "Organic Piecing", "Genetic Mapping", "Virus Elimination", "Molecular Medicine", and "Regeneration", just to name a few. Perhaps it is better
There is nothing like the thoughts of others being posted here to get the cognitive juices flowing. So here is an idea I got after looking at Frank's ideas. In the OS/2 version there were occasional incidents where colonizing a planet lead to the discovery that the planet had an indiginous population, sometimes pre-sentient, sometimes sentient, sometimes only with a sentient potential. In the OS/2 version the only possibilities were to restrict your colony as to not interf
There are many factors that affect population growth in our real world. As a couple of examples, the Kistler family started in the American colonies with John George Kistler, who, in the span of two generations expanded the family over 50 times the original size, while the Washington family (of the Virginia Washington's that produced our first president) only expanded their line by meager amounts in two generations. Why? Because of very differing attitudes. In both cases, ther
On this front I have been waithing to see how "governments" are implemented. I have been supprised by the 100% tax rates without total breakdown in moral, but perhaps the impact on tax rates on moral has yet to be implemented? Cheers, Jack
You have mentioned one problem I had with the OS/2 version: adding a newly discovered improvement to the galaxy wide governer resulted in a change to the projects of those planets that were beyond that item in the list to that item. If a planet happened to have expended more resourses on the project it replaced, that was too bad. The resources were lost. I like the idea of being able to choose, for each planet that is affected, whether or not to continue with the current project or s
