Ahhh...I've just had a thought. I could concentrate on making a DesktopXP theme to make use of the alpha blending, and keep the matching WB skin fairly "simple"...that's so simple it might just work

#16 - true...WB would need to check it wasn't running on XP SP1 if the "render BMP" code was to be included to protect those aflicted with active desktop syndrome from jpgs...

#16 SD - exactly. The edges need to be sub pixel fine to look anyhting like fur. I'd made the stooopid assumption initially that this didn't matter as I could just create it against the intended wallpaper and skip the tranperancy...a cunning plan with just 2 drawbacks - one, the wallpaper is often covered by a window/icons, and two - the wall paper is often covered by a window/icons. Frugus - oh yes! I remember that problem back along...I too quit using jpgs so that I could run DesktopX for a while. I've been running XP so long now that I'd forgotten that. I wonder if this is the case, if SkinStudio might be revised in the next version, and WB add the ability to take a jpg in a skin and render it as a BMP if active desktop is turned off on a machine? monstaVision - I would suggest that a better way to commision an artist would be to look at their work and make them an offer directly. The implication in the other thread you started is that if you decide you don't like the work someone provides then you won't pay for it which would seem to be an unreasonable condition to place when asking someone to invest a significant amount of time working for you.

Hmmm, we have hundreds of users, most using jpgs as wallpapers and as yet I've never come across a problem with this on XP. I guess there must be something else behind whatever problems have been reported which interact to cause the problem.

dabe - I agree with you about the use of Photoshop. In the digital age, use of something like photoshop gives the photographer the control that would "normally" be possible in the dark room. Of course, it can be over done and the result then becomes computer graphics rather than photography

Many thanks for all the links - I'll check them out when at work as it's for there I need it. If Office XP offers enough though, that will do as we're likely to be deploying that from the summer to all new machines, and probably as an upgrade the the current fleet.

I see it, and it does look good It does seem that with wallpapers, with most people it's "any colour as long as it's blue" though...but, TV companies use blue as a background a lot because they know its fairly neutral, so I guess it's related?

The loss of quality through edit/save - clearly you work on a source file and only convert to jpg before uploading...you'd never use a lossy algorithm for working on things.
