jpgs every time for me. If people with Win98 wish to use them as BMPs to avoid needing active desktop, they can convert them once downloaded. The loss of quality on a reasonably compressed jpg is barely noticable (that's the point...the group that came up with it worked long and hard to make that the case!), and they're easily converted if needed once people have them.
If the target audience is fellow graphic designers using IE then it works. yrag - why would someone need that when locking your machine is built in to XP anyhow? If you wanted to shutdown and force things to quit without user interaction etc, then that tool would help, but what does it add in this case? Am I missing some problem with Win+L?

If not, you could rig up a simple program displaying a screen shot which will make a lot of noise as soon as anyone clicks on anything...it could be done in something as simple as PowerPoint and would catch most people. Yikes...then Win+L is your friend in such a war zone...I do it habitually since I often deal with confidential matters, but in a shared office, so it's almost 2nd nature to kit Win+L whenever I leave my machine...I even find myself doing it at home when I go and make a tea

Since more people download things than create things, and that it is the opinions of everyone who might choose to download something (or not!) that could help one improve then I think it would be counter productive to limit the comments in this way.
Jafo - do you have any tips on how to optimise a BMP for both the actual boot screen AND the autogenerated mini-preview at the same time? I notice that some images manage this even with extensive dithering used in the 4 bit image, but I'm not sure why. Maybe if the dithering uses a fixed pattern then the pixel sampling for the mini-view would hit the same pattern at each point and it would work better? I'd used error diffusion dithering as the colour/contrast ranges seemed to be best
It depends - are you looking to just stop the casual passerby running something mischieous, or do you need to create a completely locked down system which you can leave open for people to try and hack for long periods? If the later, then you could go down the route of system policies, strong passwords, and running something like DeepFreeze to undo anything people might get up to even if they get arround the restrictions - but you'll probably find the system a pain to use yourself! <

Kona0197 - given the clear benefits you know about NTFS, how about 2 partitions? NTFS for the system and most apps, and a separate FAT32 one for the old games? That way you'll also be protecting your system from the old games trashing things if they go up the swanny...?

It's painful to see a preview look so disproportionatly bad though having spent time to try and optimise the actual BMP though. I'll live with it...
